Food was nearly done, and then I heard it switch off without beeping I went over to it and it started going on and off on and off. I got very nervous, So unplugged it. This is never happened before, so I don't know what happened. so unplugged it. This is never happened before, so I don't know what happened.

THERE IS another microwave but I don't know where it is plugged into. And I'm afraid to touch anything right now. I was about to start heating something up in the microwave.

I thought maybe there was a black out, but it went on and off about six times really quickly and the Wi-Fi is ok

Cross post with a few other people on the matter of a fuse box.

On the day before Christmas Eve our kitchen electrics started tripping and I started to panic firstly about keeping a load of meat and other fresh produce that I'd just bought cold and secondly about cooking a turkey with an oven that wouldn't stay on. Turns out DPs idiot mate who was staying on our drive in a camper van (long story) had plugged his van heater into the slightly dodgy outside plug and that was tripping everything.

Luckily he could just not do it I did not give a shit as to whether he was cold as there was no chance of finding an electrician at that time of year at short notice. OP could you have something new plugged it that's overloading your electrics?

tabbymog · 30/05/2017 08:39

Your microwave watched Paxman last night and finally decided it's not going to vote Tory again... If I were you I'd dispose of it before it sees another Tory win on 8 June and commits suicide by self-immolation.

SnickersWasAHorse · 30/05/2017 08:39

Stop plugging thing in with those multi plug blocks. They are not safe, especially for high voltage items.

Ifailed · 30/05/2017 08:45

OP, given you are sight impaired, I would just leave things as they are for now. Even if you have inadvertently switched the fridge off, it should be fine for a couple of hours if you leave the door closed. Concentrate on getting someone over to help you out, someone who can check what is switched on or not and at the same time get your landlord to call an electrician out.

Don't eat the fish if you are not convinced it's properly cooked, the last thing you want now is a dose of food poisoning.

Good luck.

The lights are working, and The socket near my bed is working but I only have A lamp and the charger plugged in. I think my neighbor went to work already, so will try and call my landlord.

If the lights are good and other electrics are working then you have, at worst, tripped the kitchen electrics.

picklemepopcorn · 30/05/2017 08:55

You will have switched off your fridge with one of those switches. If the landlord comes soon, then just wait. If not, then turn on a switch near the fridge. If you hear it kick in straight away, great! If not turn it straight off again and try the next, and so on.

That is what I would do. If you feel unsafe, or smell unusual heat/burning/rubber, then leave the building and call for help.

Ok? Are you feeling a bit calmer?

hellokittymania · 30/05/2017 08:56

Cloud, I'm leaving it to the landlord.

Thank you everybody, popcorn, and a tiny bit calmer

Unfortunately, dodgy electrics can also smell like burning fish!!

Blappy · 30/05/2017 09:15

Sorry for joking at you my lovely Flowers you okay now?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 30/05/2017 09:35

a good way to check if things are hot in the middle is to use a metal skewer or thin knife

poke it in and leave it there for five to ten seconds, as you take it out touch the tip to the inside of your wrist or top lip. Mostly stuff that is cooked sufficiently will be too hot for you to want to leave the metal on your skin!

EmilyBiscuit · 30/05/2017 09:44

Multi sockets are only suitable for really low current stuff. Think phone charger and bedside lamp.

As a rule of thumb, items designed to heat stuff draw a lot of power and must never be plugged in to a multi socket. Equally, large appliances (eg fridge, freezer) should have their own proper socket too.

hellokittymania · 30/05/2017 09:49

Biscuits, I am very very cautious around electricity. The landlord said don't switch on two things at the same time, and I never have. If the slow cooker is on, nothing else gets switched on. If the oven is on, nothing else is on.

@hellokittymania ,
is everything sorted now?

Roomba · 30/05/2017 13:49

That sounds like your electrics are rather dodgy, if your landlord told you not to use more than one thing at a time? A domestic circuit should be able to handle the oven and the kettle or microwave being on at the same time! If not, it needs fixing!

I'm super cautious about electrics due to my house burning down thanks to dodgy wiring. Can you ask your landlord to get an electrician to check everything over? It's not very reasonable to just tell your tenant not to use more than one appliance at once, is it!

picklemepopcorn · 30/05/2017 14:12

Roomba, hellokitty doesn't live in Europe, I think in Vietnam? You're right, you should be able to plug several things in, but the integrated appliances are all plugged in as well as slow cooker etc. I'm sure she turns lights on as well.

The electricity in the whole building may not have the capacity we would expect.

LIZS · 30/05/2017 14:48

Looks like a UK kitchen to me - 3 pin sockets and Sainsbury's bag! The "built in" microwave is pretty old too, DM had same model until a few years ago. I suspect it is a maze of wires and plugs behind.

hellokittymania · 31/05/2017 01:17

Popcorn, in the UK at the moment. You are correct though, I do spend a huge chunk of time in Vietnam.

It will be fixed tomorrow hopefully. I haven't used it at all today. I think The building is very old. They just updated the fire safety last month, although they had to make some exceptions in my flat because I could not open the front door.

hellokittymania · 31/05/2017 01:20

I'm not going to use this anymore

OMG what just happened to my conviction oven?
OP posts:
hellokittymania · 31/05/2017 01:57

Is this OK to be on top of the oven and at the side? On the side of the oven to the right behind the TV usually I had a box of cereal there because I don't have much space.

The TEA, not the TV the TV you drink

The top of my microwave/grill oven has a sign saying "caution hot surface". I wouldn't want to put anything combustible on it, nor any foodstuff that could be affected.

LIZS · 31/05/2017 06:23

Don't keep the kettle up there, moisture could drip into the microwave . Ideally all the ventilation needs to be kept clear.
