To ask how anyone can justify the fact Theresa May categorically refused to say she thinks Brexit is a good idea

Seriously, the Prime Minister has basically just said she doesn't agree with Brexit but 'it's the will of the people' so she'll carry on regardless.

Doesn't that make anyone think twice?

Thought everyone knew that ?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/05/2017 22:05

No. The country had made a decision, and she's doing the right thing by sticking with it.

ComingUpTrumps · 29/05/2017 22:05

YANBU. But she did support Remain, didn't she?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/05/2017 22:05

*has

esiotrot2015 · 29/05/2017 22:06

Corbyn was more for it than her

ComingUpTrumps · 29/05/2017 22:07

She has to respect democratic rules (ie. the so-called 'will of the people'). I am a Remain voter by the way.

Potentialpoochowner · 29/05/2017 22:08

Think twice about what? Brexit? No, always knew it would be shit for the country? TM? What choice dies she have? What choice does any politician have? They have to set their though the result of the referendum or will he branded 'enemies of the people' (copyright Daily Mail)

shinyredbus · 29/05/2017 22:09

Didn't Corbyn vote to remain? I may be wrong - but I'm sure I've read that somewhere...

refusetobeasheep · 29/05/2017 22:09

where have you been? she campaigned against brexit but is accepting the result. What is there to think about?

IvorHughJarrs · 29/05/2017 22:10

I thought she'd always made that very clear. She supported Remain and voted for it but is able to put that aside to deliver what the referendum result asked for. I get asked to do lots of things in my job I may not agree with in principle but, as a professional, I do it and do it well. She is saying she will do that as a politician
Do you think politicians and civil servants can only deal with issues that fit their own beliefs?

CrispyBathTowel · 29/05/2017 22:11

She was a well-known remainer. This was Cameron's doing, not hers and she's stuck with it now due to our democracy. I don't know what other answer she could've given really.

Bearbehind · 29/05/2017 22:11

She's essentially asking people to vote for her to implement something she fundamentally disagrees with to then have the get out clause of 'it wasn't my idea it was the will of the people'

Why would anyone vote for her?

OP posts:
2014newme · 29/05/2017 22:12

Yes she supported remain but as she days, the people voted to brexit so as Pm she has to do that.
This is not new!
What is it making you think twice about?

DesignedForLife · 29/05/2017 22:14

She's asking people to vote for her to implement what they voted for. I don't see the issue with that.

Crunchymum · 29/05/2017 22:17

I actually respect the fact she hasn't been a turn coat about her Brexit status.

I am not a Tory voter though.

Bearbehind · 29/05/2017 22:18

Really?

Are people honestly happy to be led by someone who is saying 'this is a fucking stupid idea but if it's what you want I'll do it'?

Didn't you hope for a more credible leader?

Paxman turned her inside out and pointed out she couldn't stand by a decision if her life depended on it.

Not great for negotiations is it?

MontyPythonsFlyingFuck · 29/05/2017 22:21

"Are people honestly happy to be led by someone who is saying 'this is a fucking stupid idea but if it's what you want I'll do it'?"

I'd actually much rather that than someone who is stupid enough to think that it's a really good idea. BECAUSE IT ISN'T.

BuzzKillington · 29/05/2017 22:22

I don't get your issue.

She was a remainer, but she recognises the country voted to leave and it’s her responsibility to ensure the referendum result is delivered.

I think she's the better choice for negotiating a good deal with Brussels.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/05/2017 22:22

Theresa May is the strong leader we need to guide us through Brexit. I voted remain, but the country as a whole voted leave and we, especially she, has to respect that.

She would be a shit leader if she said 'fuck it, I don't care what you voted I'm doing the opposite'. She can't just ignore the vote because it wasn't the result she wanted.

nancy75 · 29/05/2017 22:22

It's actually one of the few things she said that I find admirable, it's not what she wanted but as leader of the country she is going to do what the country voted for & do it to the best of her ability - I don't know what else she could do in this situation?

Bearbehind · 29/05/2017 22:23

Weirdly you do have a point monty!

thatdearoctopus · 29/05/2017 22:23

Yes. Since you ask. At least, if the alternative is Corbyn.

PourquoiPas · 29/05/2017 22:23

None of the leaders thought Brexit was a good idea.

None of them campaigned for it. (I believe they all campaigned against it though correct me if I'm wrong)

So what's your solution? Don't vote?

IrenetheQuaint · 29/05/2017 22:24

We all knew this last July when she was elected leader of the Tory party, so what's changed now? Everyone knows she campaigned (weakly) for Remain, so she's very sensible not to fake being a Leaver now. She's said she has 100% accepted the will of the people.

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 29/05/2017 22:27

Conservatives offered us the vote for Brexit as their campaign. We voted them in. They upheld their end of the bargain and gave us the vote, we voted to leave. Now TM is seeing it through. Who'd of thought an MP keeping their word!! Nicola Sturgeon needs to take a lesson from TM and listen to the people.
