Sorry about the Daily Mail link!

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4550978/Carolyn-Hartz-reveals-secrets-amazing-body.html.

This is an article about someone who gave up sugar almost 30 years ago. Her diet/general lifestyle seems pretty good to me. What do you all think?

PS disclaimer I'm definitely not her and this isn't a sneaky stealth boast! Grin

Xylitol is great - the only sugar substitute that doesn't have that awful metallic/chemical aftertaste. I gave up sugar to help with a skin condition. It cured it in a couple of months. Can't bear the stuff now and YY to the poster above who said it made them feel drunk and woozy - that is exactly what it does to me.

Bettyspants · 29/05/2017 20:33

The repeated mention of sweet life not ringing alarm bells? That and Femail ....

expatinscotland · 29/05/2017 20:36

'Xylitol is great - the only sugar substitute that doesn't have that awful metallic/chemical aftertaste. '

Gives plenty of people bloating, gas and diarrhea.

shinyredbus · 29/05/2017 20:42

I would die without sugar Grin

Xylitol tastes bloody awful!

Hello

My name is Rufus

I am a carbaholic Sad

doubleshotespresso · 29/05/2017 20:51

She undoubtedly looks fabulous but reading this I am enviable of her ability to function in the absence of carbs.... I would lose my mind within days.... Sad

That's most certainly why I am still carrying baby weight too Sad

ShowMePotatoSalad · 29/05/2017 20:52

I'd never give up any food I enjoyed. Moderation is the way to go IMO.

doubleshotespresso · 29/05/2017 20:58

I am generally not a fan of diets which ban entire food groups, they never seem to work. Her diet and lifestyle appear uber-healthy, I cannot believe she eats many of those cakes featured!

specialsubject · 29/05/2017 21:01

Dipstick art student science. She is of course eating sugar in fruit and other foods. What she eats little of is cake and sweets.

And lots of disgusting artificial sweetener, presumably from her sponsor.

Empireoftheclouds · 29/05/2017 21:03

Xylitol is great - the only sugar substitute that doesn't have that awful metallic/chemical aftertaste. I gave up sugar to help with a skin condition.. Why would you then use a nasty substitute which is no better for you?

Hey! I'm an art graduate and have a sound understanding of science. Stop tarring us all with the same bad science Wink

*Bad science brush

Slimthistime · 29/05/2017 21:57

People who have given it up, are any of you literally never eating cake etc again?
I'm on the blood sugar diet - major weight problem - and I can imagine it would be easier to give up rather than have it occasional,y and get a high and a crash etc.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 29/05/2017 22:00

I will eat cake again! At celebrations, I also make very convincing bread substitutes (I say whilst eating a low carb bagel I just baked) and a wicked cheesecake which is very low carb.

JollySmelly · 29/05/2017 22:01

I'm not sure what your point is Empire. I was only giving my thoughts on the matter. No need to be pissy about it as I'm fairly sure I wasn't pissy to you :(

Agoddessonamountaintop · 29/05/2017 22:10

Yeah Special Subject, < shakes fist >. I'm an art student and I agree with this:

'Dipstick art student science. She is of course eating sugar in fruit and other foods. What she eats little of is cake and sweets.

No need for digs at us lowly artists, thanks very much.

Anyway, I agree if she feels the need to make fake cakes and sweets she's still addicted to sugar but trying to find ways to cheat and still have it.

I've given up sugar a few times (the first time was about 17 years ago, the last maybe 12 years ago). I used the Kathleen Desmaisons Radiant Recovery method, which is pretty hardcore and doesn't entertain sweeteners and the like, but does make you feel much better - amazing, in fact - and I lost loads of weight. Where I fell down was with the avoidance of alcohol Blush. I don't have much of a social life and find it very easy to lay into the wine of an evening plus DH keeps buying it < chugs third glass >.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 29/05/2017 22:13

Oh apart from the Dipstick art student science bit, obv! Blush

Hulder · 29/05/2017 22:16

Slimthistime I'm blood sugar dieting too!

Not sure about the cake. Just been on holiday and was v clear I was not BSDing there and put on weight Blush so starting again.

I haven't given up alcohol which is not v BSD but one small glass only and not every night.

I picture myself transitioning to a mediterranean style diet with still v minimal carbs and occasional cake.

This is v different to my previous diet of cake and/or biscuits daily and thinking I deserved an extra treat for basically every day at work. And reduced or no emotional/secret eating - which turns out to be v carb/insulin driven rather than as stress driven as I thought for so long.

Slimthistime · 29/05/2017 22:20

Hulder, exactly, probably some people can't do occasional sugar withiut feeling unwell.

Empireoftheclouds · 29/05/2017 22:21

I wasn't being 'pissy' I was asking why you would give up sugar for health reasons and then use a substitute which is no better health wise. I'm not sure if I could have been any plainer tbh, so not sure why you didn't get the point.

honeyroar · 29/05/2017 22:33

I haven't read the link, but I gave up sugar this year and am finding it so easy! And I was an absolute chocoholic - none of this piece a night crap, I would eat one, if not two family packs of revels on a journey to London from Manchester - no control whatsoever! I still eat plenty of carbs, I eat TONS of fruit each day, I've had sweets or choc occasionally (although I'm still getting a real kick from not being bothered about it), I've had plenty of nights out/takeaways/meals out, been on mini breaks, I don't feel on a diet like when I've done ww or sw. I've lost a steady lb a week - 22lbs now and am about to go down a second dress size. I'm over the moon with it and still going strong.

2littlemoos · 29/05/2017 23:02

honey tell me more! How did you start? Did you go cold turkey? How often do you indulge?

I am finding it tough to find a balance atm. Like, what helped changed your perception; why does it not feel like a diet anymore?

An example of what you eat in a day would be helpful? Sorry, it's not me being nosey!

ComingUpTrumps · 29/05/2017 23:03

Ooh I'd be interested to hear about how you found it too honey

Definitely facelifts and lipo going on there plus a tummy tuck. Minimum. You can see over her stomach that the skin is thin from being lose and pulled taught. Plus she has the bumpiness that comes from lipo. And her face is definitely lifted, she has the slightly cats eyes and slightly joker mouth.

Underbeneathsies · 29/05/2017 23:20

Afaik xylitol is sugar from cherries.
It has a funny sounding name but it's a natural fruit sugar, extracted from cherries, not man made.

It is six times sweeter than sucrose, and can give you an upset tummy of you eat the same quantities of it as sucrose. If I use a sixth of it it seems to be ok for me, and doesn't set me off running to the loo.
