Tesco have delivered my shopping but haven't taken the money..

So yh, just that. Had a few issues this morning with them not able to take payment. So I rang up to try and sort it but got nowhere. I rang a different number and got put through to a manager, the manager took my car details and the payment went through, that's what he said anyway and said my shopping would be delivered.

I remember checking the bank due to the confusion so I know exactly how much I had in there. Shopping has long been delivered and I've just looked at my bank and the money is still in there. Confused

Would I be unreasonable to put the money into another account and say nothing? If they ask for the money at a later date I will offer to pay in instalments but i couldn't do it all up front especially as it wasn't my error.

What do you think I should do?

I think you need to think of it as being 'spent'. I do this with cheques. People take ages to pay them in, (brownies/PTA) so I just presume the money isnt there at all.

DilberryPancake · 31/05/2017 15:55

They could take the money at any time since you have a contract, but I imagine they would cover bank charges if it's very much later.

If it's not pending, then they won't be able to claim it automatically. They need to get a hold on it before it can be taken. But that doesn't mean the payment would fail. Just that it might.

Probably unpopular, but I'd just spend it now and rejig things later. Otherwise, how long could you be waiting? You can't leave however much available indefinitely.

OnionKnight · 31/05/2017 15:57

You need to put the money out of your mind or think of it as spent.

PainCanBeBeautiful · 31/05/2017 15:59

hownow yes I think you're right I need to just pretend it's gone.

pancake that's what I was originally thinking of doing hence my wording in my first post. It would feel naughty I guess, but technically (in my head anyway) if they haven't taken it and show no signs of taking it then surely it is my money until then.

I won't lie I don't have money much that I can spend on a day out somewhere because whenever I do have a lump some coming through. There always seems to be something that needs replaced or clothes or shoes to buy etc.

I want to be rich so I don't have to worry about this stuff lol
Hopefully going back to college will help make that a somewhat reality.

I think it will go. You've done the right thing, I wouldn't be chasing Tesco down to give them my money if they can't be clever enough to do it the first few times. Not your job. I think Tesco can absorb the hit Confused

DilberryPancake · 31/05/2017 16:06

If you have called them twice to take the payment, I would presume they have everything they require to claim it. You're not obliged to keep the money available in your account. But, big but, you would still owe it. So there's uncertainty over what would happen. It could be weeks or months before they catch up with their administration.

PainCanBeBeautiful · 31/05/2017 16:09

I think I may just leave the online shopping then. I'm due to do another shop this week and wonder how that would turn out.

It happened me before, and it took almost 2 weeks for it to leave my account after the delivery. As others have said, try to ignore the money.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 31/05/2017 16:11

Legally they can take it within the next six months without giving you notice; and after that one month after warning you that they'd take it.

PainCanBeBeautiful · 31/05/2017 16:12

That's reassuring to know december

They might not get round to taking it, just wait and see. I had 2 similar things with online orders from two (different) big department stores last Christmas.

One sent me the wrong perfume (right perfume, wrong bottle type), and the other sent white bedding with marks on. Both companies sent replacements, refunded the purchase price?! but failed to send instructions to return the original. I chased both companies 3 times and each time got someone who couldn't understand what had happened, said someone else would call me and no one ever did.

So I was left with 2 bottles of perfume and 2 duvets and hadn't been charged for either. I figured they would work it out and charge me eventually, but 18 months on I haven't been. I figured my responsibility to sort it ended after I had made 3 phone calls. After that it was up to them.

Floralnomad · 31/05/2017 16:23

The yes was to say you wait 6 weeks ( or as long as it takes) , you've spent the money , you've had the product when you look at your bank account take that amount off the balance until it's been taken by Tesco , that's basic budgeting and frankly I don't know what the problem is .

PainCanBeBeautiful · 31/05/2017 16:56

If you don't know what the problem is (given I didn't actually say it was a problem more that it was confusing, I've also explain possible implications because of it) then I'm not sure why you bothered to comment. You could have asked what the problem was and I could explain further but instead you've given an answer based on something you say you understand. Confused

Say you don't understand*

I sure as hell don't wait for 6 weeks for a shop to take the money out of my account, that's just ridiculous, I get a balance at the cash point, if I can afford something I buy it, who the hell waits 6 weeks for a card payment to go through? 24 to 48hours far enough. That's basic budgeting. Not 6 weeks!!!

Anothernewnn · 31/05/2017 17:05

No Buster, basic budgeting is knowing what your incoming and outgoings are. If a payment hasn't been taken, you consider your balance as if it has been. Not as "extra" money.

BusterGonad · 31/05/2017 17:16

For 6 weeks! Every time you spend on your card you are suppose to wait for 6 weeks! Crikey, I think if the shop can't bank your payment within a sensible time scale they need to seriously think about changing their banking system! If you pay a bill you online with your card you are suppose to give it 48 hours to go through, so why if your buying something is it 6 weeks?

MapMyMum · 31/05/2017 17:32

Contact them on facebook, theyre very quick at getting things sorted out that way

Goingtobeawesome · 31/05/2017 17:45

I can't help it if you thought I was rude. However, you want to get your shopping for free so you can buy treats. I'm not going to say go for it Hun

PainCanBeBeautiful · 31/05/2017 17:51

Please come and live my life and see why I would like a treat. You know what a treat is for me? Taking my kids to the zoo because travel is expensive and so is the food and I've never been able to take them yet. When my daughter first came home we couldn't go anywhere due to her health so now that we can yes I see extra money because until it is taken that's what it is to me and I just want to do something nice! Shoot me now for putting my kids through hell and wanting to spoil them for once!

I didn't start this thread to have my budgeting questioned. We have everything we need and never go without I just can't treat them all the time and I can't replace things if they are broke so if I have to prioritise something then yes something else has to take a hit.
Get off your horse or stay on it I don't care but please leave without saying another word because I don't need stress from strangers question my abilities to provide for my family.

I'm also on benefits, want to take a jab at me for that n all?

OP posts:
mumeeee · 31/05/2017 17:52

I have had a lot of Tesco deliveries. Tesco never take payment before the shopping has been delivered mainly due to the fact the final payment might change for various reasons.
The payment often takes a couple of days after delivery to show up

SilverGiraffe7 · 31/05/2017 18:28

If they ask for the money at a later date I will offer to pay in instalments but i couldn't do it all up front especially as it wasn't my error.

Err - no. You have the money. You owe them the money. Whenever they ask for it you surely already have it there to give to them! Even if you don't chase it up (that's up to your own conscience) you have to mentally allot that amount of money to Tesco to pay immediately if they ask.

SilverGiraffe7 · 31/05/2017 18:32

I'm sure people aren't questioning your ability to provide for your children - I'm certainly not.
But you asked if you were being unreasonable to move the money to use for something else and the general consensus is yes, it would be unreasonable.
If the answer upsets you, I'm sorry. But you did ask for opinions.
I hope you find a way to treat your DC without this money; be good to yourself too.

PainCanBeBeautiful · 31/05/2017 18:40

Silver did you not read the rest of the words that came with that comment? You decide to pluck one part out of context and use it against me?

I also said I will leave the money where it was and I've done that. Why the need to keep telling me something I've already done?

OP posts:
Mummmy2017 · 31/05/2017 18:50

how can it be stealing , the money is in her bank, and if she moves it and the money isn't there when Tesco ask for it, she will get bank charges and they will try again and if it's still not there charge her again, then send her a solicitors for the money, and by the time she finally pays it will have cost her double what the original bill was.

Stealing is not paying , not paying double..
