To say Hull is bloody brilliant

It is city of culture this year and is putting on such a show.

It gets such a bad press-people need to give Hull a chance!

I spent much of my childhood there and most of my family are still in the area.

Dancing fountains are great fun in the summer. Sunderland and Stockton have some and kids like playing chicken with them!

It's a shame that Queens gardens have been left to rot, though.

This is the thread for me! Lived here for nearly 20 years and wouldn't move. The change in the city center has been wonderful to watch. Like the ugly duckling turning into a gorgeous swan. Small scale developments have made some super little spaces. Awe! Off to try and work out how to make a pangalactic gargle blaster 😉

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 26/05/2017 21:27

I've been in Canada for the last six years. I'd love to go back and see how my home city is doing. I'll just have to look at the fab pictures on social media and watch stuff online. What a lineup for One Big Weekend!!

@Jakeyboy1 if you are a 6 year old girl then maybe!

I went to uni there and stayed an extra 4 years. In fact my eldest was born there. Brilliant place to be a student Smile

TheLegendOfBeans · 26/05/2017 21:49

I want to visit as they've got a retrospective that includes loads of stuff about COUM etc x

Okite · 26/05/2017 21:51

Does anyone remember the schnapps bar in Hull? Presuming it is long gone (replaced by the gin bar..?)
Student life essential, £1 a schnapps. Spiders was awesome. I miss hull!

CheshireChat · 26/05/2017 21:55

Hah, I currently live in Hull and we're planning on moving to Manchester!

That said, i don't hate the city, quite like parts of it, but it tends to be dead after 5 in the city centre and most other places and I like a more frantic pace I guess.

I do really like East Park though and live 10 minutes away so that's great as I get to see the little goslings and last year, I saw some peacock chicks right after they hatched Smile.

Zoflorabore · 26/05/2017 21:57

Back in 1996 I went to uni in Hull and it was brilliant, lived off Beverley road and had a blast.
Trying to remember the name of the huge
club on the corner that we used to go to- possibly called LA's??
Really pleased that Hull is getting some attention and investment.
Would love to go back and visit...

Zoflorabore · 26/05/2017 21:58

I remember Spiders! And a place where gin was 20p!!

nigelsbigface · 26/05/2017 22:01

Never

In
Hull

Funnyonion17 · 26/05/2017 22:03

Don't forget East Park, has a free animal centre and farm which is lovely. The parks huge! Lots of water boats etc in the summer.

Brandnewstart · 26/05/2017 22:09

It was LAs. Loved Spiders and The Tower (Tower for an hour Wink). 20p a pint and the DJs up a ladder!!

callmehannahbaker · 26/05/2017 22:09

Spiders is still going, last I heard it was 60p for a short though :)

LA's was demolished and is now becoming a Hilton hotel.

The city centre and especially the marina and Humber street are now always busy of an evening.

It really is great here

We visited earlier in the year to see the Blade. Fab place, really enjoyed it. We've said we should go back without kids as there seems a staggering amount of pubs.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 26/05/2017 22:24

I came to Hull in 1996 for uni too and still haven't left. Used to love Spiders, also rock/indie/80s nights at the Room, gigs at the Adelphi and Eat Your Words. Pearson Park is bloody lovely too.

Beans, the COUM exhibition has finished now but Cosey's book is well worth a read, if you haven't already. Would never have guessed I'd come across another TG afficionado on MN!

TheVermiciousKnid · 26/05/2017 22:24

Hull is fab. If you're going, don't forget to have a look around the university campus, which is lovely. The library is absolutely fantastic - great views from the 7th floor and there is an art gallery on the ground floor which currently has got an exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery (I think).

5foot5 · 26/05/2017 23:22

Despite being brought up in an area that was briefly called South Humberside (really North Lincolnshire) I only visited Hull quite recently.

Well, TBH, it was Hessle which is really nice and very close to the Humber Bridge. But the reason for my visit was to achieve one of the things on my bucket list. Wait for it...

Spurn Head.

Don't laugh. It is a lovely walk and a dead interesting place to visit. So, if you all flock to the City of Culture try to spare some time for an excursion out to this place

TheLegendOfBeans · 27/05/2017 06:59

I'm sure there's loads of us SpitefulMidLifeAnimal but we're all hiding behind a veneer of parking tales and questioning local schooling choices 😂

Ps: Coseys book is really great. I read it and I plan to read it all over again x

gggrrrargh · 27/05/2017 07:05

I saw Jarvis Cocker at a secret gig at the Adelphi. Hull is my favourite city Smile

AceholeRimmer · 27/05/2017 10:59

I've always heard people say it's the "arsehole of the UK" but I've been several times and it's beautiful.

MixedUpShookUpGirl · 27/05/2017 12:14

I visited it and thought it was charming in a down to earth and slightly down at heel way. A bit like Manchester before it got all spruced up.
