To say Hull is bloody brilliant

It is city of culture this year and is putting on such a show.

It gets such a bad press-people need to give Hull a chance!

DD went there to University and stayed for 22 years. We visited many times Nursescorne and I can't say I experienced any of the things you mention. I am not suggesting they don't exist, but it is possible to stay there without coming across them.

Creatureofthenight · 26/05/2017 20:14

Spiders - still the best club I've ever been to.

Check out this bad boy:

Love Hull! I used to work there (although I commuted, as it was only a year long placement) and we have family just outside in Hessle. Always loads going on.

MartinGoresLeftToe · 26/05/2017 20:22

If your visiting Hull during City of Culture year check out their website, especially the 'Back to Ours' events on during school holidays, AssembleFest on 3rd June good and Freedom Festival in September always great. Maritime museum, East Riding museum good for older kids, transport museum fab for younger kids, as is the land train. Entry to all museums is free. East park with the lake and animals is good, west park is also good for kids. Like most cities there are parts you probably wouldn't want to go, but there's plenty to do for a day visit/ weekend trip. If visiting without kids try the lion and key which has a great selection of gin and beer, or if with kids try Furleys for a freak shake.

I live in a well know East Yorkshire seaside town.
My daughter is in Uni at Hull. She seems to enjoy it there. Yeah it's got some rough areas, but no different to any other city.
I'm from Herts , originally - it reminds me a lot of North London Or South West Herts.
But the museums and the Ferens Art gallery are amazing, The Deep is fabulous, and it seems to have quite a music scene going on. Plus there are the theatres.
The university is lovely, too, especially the library (where I saw an exhibition of sketches and planning drawings of famous works of art, on tour fromThe National Gallery ( or British Museum - I can't remember!!!) for FREE, the concert hall (Daughter is a music student there).

Then there's the surrounding scenery...the Humber bridge country park is good for a walk with some amazing views.
I don't know why it gets such a bad press, to be honest.

callmehannahbaker · 26/05/2017 20:23

Be it culture type things e.g. The ferens, maritime, uni or museums quarter, or comedy/theatrical shenanigans/arty things-hull truck, city hall, the numerous back to ours venues (look on the hull 2017 website) or the soon to be reopened new theatre or just people having fun... there is so much for everyone.

Yes, Hull has its bad parts-so do all big cities, and Hull is a big city, people often forget that.

Isn't the Radio 1 big weekend on there this weekend? Validation!

callmehannahbaker · 26/05/2017 20:24

PLUS! We have a land train!!

BikeRunSki · 26/05/2017 20:25

The Hull Truck Theatre Company is awesome too.

callmehannahbaker · 26/05/2017 20:27

Big weekend is indeed Hull based this weekend-well, a little village with an awesome venue just outside of hull

Land trains! We have one in our town! Gotta love them 😀

MartinGoresLeftToe · 26/05/2017 20:31

Other good places to eat without kids- Hitchcocks vegetarian restaurant or 1884 tapas. If you want to treat yourselves go for the main 1884 restaurant. Plus there's a new gin bar opened. Lots of good places round the marina/ old fruit market

jamdonut · 26/05/2017 20:31

I'm thinking it might be better to give the area a miss over the weekend, what with Radio 1 and all. Could be quite chaotic.

jamdonut · 26/05/2017 20:33

Don't forget Wings! MartinGoresLeftToe
Everyone I know loves it there! Ive only been once, but plan to go again.

outabout · 26/05/2017 20:34

Hull to Rotterdam ferry
Departs Hull 8PM in the evening and arrives Rotterdam 8 the next morning.

Eatsleepteach · 26/05/2017 20:37

Hull is amazing! Also the updated marina area with quality restaurants, a gin bar, chocolaterie...feel very proud of my home city.

notyourmummy · 26/05/2017 20:37

Hull is awesome. And will be quiet this weekend, seeing as Radio 1 Big Weekend isn't actually anywhere near the town centre!

hellokittymania · 26/05/2017 20:40

Thank you, that sounds really doable actually! I could leave on the Sunday evening! Can anybody recommend a good B&B that is near shops and amenities or a good transportation?

GnomeDePlume · 26/05/2017 20:43

I was a student in Hull 1985-89 then had my first job there afterwards. It was a brilliant place to be a student. It was the only place I have lived where I didnt feel short.

porridgetits · 26/05/2017 20:44

Loads of different areas to choose from to eat and drink in. Plus lots of parks, and free things to do in them - skateboarding lessons happening Saturdays over the next few months.

Imfinehowareyou · 26/05/2017 20:47

Sad to hear about Yankee Burger. Was at uni in hull in the 90s and worked there in the noughties. Good memories.

MonkeyMonkeyUnderpants · 26/05/2017 20:47

I love Hull. I'm one of the City of Culture volunteers. It gets a bad rep but there's so much history and entertainment here that people always overlook. I'd love to tell everyone about the city I call home.

Jakeyboy1 · 26/05/2017 20:52

@callmehannahbaker Mum is that you???Wink

My mum is from hull. To her it is The world's undisputed leading city!

I had not been for many years but went last year and was struck by the beautiful architecture it really is stunning. Move a street back and it is pretty much like anywhere else. Princes Quay was a bit stinky outside but there was some nice bars and the cheapest Monsoon I have ever been to!!! I hope the city of culture does them some good that is what it is designed for after all.
