Yes I think we deserve a rally

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 25/05/2017 08:08

From where I'm standing, its clear to me that these threads have the bigliest following, bigger than anything Obama ever achieved.

Thanks Mort for hugely clever named new thread!

I am hoping that the leaks by NYT is going to grow because at the moment it's not that prominent and it's appalling. However, on BBC at the moment they are saying GMPolice will not be sharing intel with the US any more.

Trump is holding another Rally on his return? To me that means he's worried. His support is dropping and will drop more because of this bonkers healthcare plan which will hit his voters big time

lionheart · 25/05/2017 08:11

Is the WH leaking to discredit IC, and/or the NYT or is someone trying to discredit the WH?

I bet the NYT is asking the same questions (belatedly).

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 25/05/2017 08:13

Thanks for the possible answers to the question "what the fuck are the Americans up to, leaking forensic information during an ongoing investigation?"

So - we know it's not accidental because they'd already been asked not to in the aftermath of prematurely naming the bomber.

We know they wouldn't do it with a police investigation in their own country.

So possibilities are:

  1. Intel communities leaking - unlikely as they do actually know their job.
  2. White House staffers leaking to discredit the Intel Community
  3. White House staffers in pay of Russia leaking to cause trouble between the US and its allies.

As to why the New York Times published after Wash Po and NYT were so careful not to divulge the actual details of Trump's leak of Israeli sourced info to the Russians, I guess the answer is probably that they view us as some sort of tin-pot nowhere little country and who cares if you screw with their police - they don't matter enough to make it on the radar. A bit the way the gutter press over here will avoid publishing gruesome pictures of British people who've died in disasters, but positively relish it when it's happening round the other side of the world. I had thought better of the NYT before this, but obviously they're not averse to making editorial decisions of a sort better fitted to Fox or Murdoch's Sun.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 25/05/2017 08:14

Sorry missed (4) off that list - WH staff leaking to discredit NYT.

lionheart · 25/05/2017 08:19

Me to (on the NYT) but then I also keep in mind that Trump has an ongoing feud with them over who is most loved and so on.

I think I read somewhere (maybe even the NYT) that the info came from the WH rather than the IC. Then it gets complicated.

Did they publish to get the scoop and to show how the leakiness of the WH? Would the latter over-ride other considerations (like sense and a journalistic ethics code)?

originalbiglymavis · 25/05/2017 08:20

Just clocking in...

MissWilmottsGhost · 25/05/2017 08:21

I thought the same about the leaks perihelion

Do you know which other papers the photos were leaked to cosie ? I would be even more suspicious if they were all anti-Trump ones Hmm

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 25/05/2017 08:28

Considering this WH regurlay feeds incorrect information to news outlets they dislike, so they can then pronounce them "fake news", Id say you'd be right to be suspicious if it transpired that the only news orgs that had this information were ones disliked by trump.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 25/05/2017 08:29

Not to discredit them as fake news in this instance, but perhaps to drum up support for shutting down the leaks and getting more aggressive towards th leakers.

Natsku · 25/05/2017 08:31

Leaks a top secret placemark

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 08:31

You'd have thought the NYT would be aware of the problems of using leaked intelligence and how they might be being used by someone.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 25/05/2017 08:44

I think this was option 4 - an attempt to discredit NYT, especially if there are NYAG-led prosecutions pending. What does surprise me is that the NYT were so foolish to publish the detail. If exposing leaks was the aim, just say you've had leaked info & had it verified by IC but chosen not to publish/risk impeding an active investigation.

OP posts:
Gumpendorf · 25/05/2017 08:44

Exactly that, Orlantina. The CEO of the NYT is the former DG of the BBC. alphabet soup.

You would think the NYT would know better, whatever the source of the leak. I still haven't forgiven the NYT for the 'Clinton cleared for now' headline on day of election. The 'for now' was unforgivable and had no basis in Comey's letter.

Roussette · 25/05/2017 08:59

From WPost..
"Mitchell's theory is that the media is so hungry for unflattering information about President Trump that it will gobble up anything that feeds its narrative. When “crazy leaks” make print, Mitchell and his fellow Trump boosters can expose the falsehoods and prove once and for all that the “fake news media,” as the president calls it, is composed of a bunch of hacks.

It's brilliant! But New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman says the plan won't work.

Maggie Haberman ✔ @maggieNYT
The Trump administration has tried this a few times, sir. We actually vet these things. "

So it seems like this IS a tactic of the WH...

GingerIvy · 25/05/2017 09:08

BREAKING: The BBC has learnt that police have stopped passing on information about #Manchester bombing to the US following leaks.

blueskyinmarch · 25/05/2017 09:12

Hello new thread. Place-marking until I have time to catch up.

lionheart · 25/05/2017 09:14

Any reputable news organisation would be aware of how they could be used.

Liberal ('fakers') media + leakers (traitors) = very useful fabrication used to cast doubt on any hideous revelation of wrongdoing.

They must be very afraid to be going this far.

HelsinkiLights · 25/05/2017 09:39

Taken from the BBC news website:
'BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera says UK officials believe that US law enforcement rather than the White House is the likely culprit for the leaks.'

WestleyAndButtockUp · 25/05/2017 09:49

I was watching CNN (or possibly CNBC) this morning early.

A reporter was reporting about the controversy on publishing the photos of the rucksack and battery and the trigger - WHILE THE PHOTOS WERE PROJECTED BEHIND HER!!

BiglyBadgers · 25/05/2017 10:07

Good morning! It is a bigly lovely sunny day here today, which has cheered my up immensely. Even with all the crap going on the sun can still shine and the world can still be beautiful. Smile

I am once again feeling a bit sorry for Spicer. However, this does support my kitten based theory that he is actually being held hostage against his will. They couldn't possibly risk him confessing all to the pope. I think we need to start a Free Spicer campaign.

The leaks on the attack are Shock. The problem is that this administration just seems incapable of keeping their mouths shut. They are so amateur I would not be surprised if they would get in a huff and tell you anything if you just looked unimpressed and said "well, I bet you don't even know anything about terrorists anyway". I also imagine half of them thinking that the UK couldn't tell them what to do, so there! Fucking idiots the lot of them. And the press are not being much better to be honest. Angry

MicrowaveSpy · 25/05/2017 10:09

Thanks for the new thread Mort

I am not clicking on NYT articles anymore.
The NYT should not have run that story, regardless of who gave the info.
I'm with Across. I'm all for the freedom of the press BUT with that comes responsibilities. They e crossed the line with the Sun & DM
