AIBU to be a little freaked, living in London?

OP posts:
Freckles1978 · 23/05/2017 23:25

I work in the Civil Service. The threat level was still at heightened this morning, It's been at this for a long time. It then for raised to critical later on today.

BandeauSally · 23/05/2017 23:25

Agree tiggy that woman on the train did exactly as we are advised to do. And of course she was going to be more switched on the day after an attack near a train station.

Freckles1978 · 23/05/2017 23:26

Sorry, It was then raised to critical later on today.

OwlOfBrown · 23/05/2017 23:26

Yes I realise that, but why will the next one be the 22/07/17?

Because as well as being on the 22nd, two fell in March, two in May, and so far one in July.

If you believe in such rubbish!

jorahmormont · 23/05/2017 23:29

I work in emergency services. I don't know where octopus has got their info from but it's incorrect.

Spectre8 · 23/05/2017 23:29

tiggytape yes but my point is if this was last week she would of said nothing and she had already looked into the bag and it was clearly just clothes so to be honest it was OTT to ask whose bag it was

hellokittymania · 23/05/2017 23:31

I live in central London as well and yes, it's scary.

BarbarianMum · 23/05/2017 23:31

Belfastbap thank you. I've been shouting similar at the radio all day as various randoms trotted out "the IRA were different" line. I grew up in/near London. It didn't feel any different.

formerlyknownasuser1469397655 · 23/05/2017 23:32

However, if you were talking about natural occurrences, such as earthquakes or volcanoes, then yes, I would agree, but these events are planned, and so it may not be rubbish.

Disclaimer: I do think it is rubbish, because of all the missed out dates, but am being pedantic

Belfastbap · 23/05/2017 23:32

Not OTT. this is how you need to be from now on. We all need to be.

Don't you remember the announcements at train stations in the 1980's? I expect you don't. Most of you likely weren't born.

HoldBackTheRain · 23/05/2017 23:32

I am scared. I don't want my son to go on a school trip on Thursday but he will go because I can't let my anxiety dicatate how he lives his life. He has SEN so is vulnerable . TBF he would like to not go (3 hours watching Shakespeare is not his idea of fun)

He'll still go, I'll still be scared. I think more attacks are likely, but the chances of being caught up in one are really, really remote. That doesn't help the poor people who have been caught up in Manchester but it's what I tell myself in order to get through my every day.

nancy75 · 23/05/2017 23:32

The train lady wasn't ott, explosive devices can be smaller than you would imagine. Bags should not be left unattended

AutumnalLeaves38 · 23/05/2017 23:33

^^ Sorry...source link fail in my previous post.
This one should work: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39176110

BoysofMelody · 23/05/2017 23:34

Life comes with many risks, cancer, fire, cars, fumes, silly accidents. I know my family has fallen victim to these " it will never happen don't be so silly" things. angry

As have my family and many others on this thread. That's why we need to understand risk and reward and the likelihood of an email entry happening and act accordingly.

No, but understanding risk is about understanding the likelihood of it happening. For example, if I smoke my risk of dying from a smoking related illness is somewhere between a third and a half, so I don't smoke. Cars can pretty dangerous and one of the leading causes of death amongst men under 40 , so I drive sensibly, appropriately and make sure my car is well maintained and I don't drink alcohol or drive when I'm tired. I don't completely avoid driving as I completely avoid smoking as the rewards of driving, outweigh the risks, but I wouldn't drive regardless of risk.

However the odds of being killed in a terrorist incident on the UK mainland are so remote as to be into the millions to one. To alter my life to the account for this tiny risk is nonsensical.

BillSykesDog · 23/05/2017 23:35

But I find it reassuring to try and remember that, in just 4 years, 13 potential attacks have been prevented by our UK Counter-Terrorism/ Security Services

I find it extremely interesting that we have been so successful at preventing them for so long but now two have happened very quickly on TMs watch. Perhaps she is not very effective at managing the threat?

Spectre8 · 23/05/2017 23:35

nancy75 there are luggage racks on trains for a reason to be used to put your luggage or big bags in given that there isn't room by your seat. And yes I am going to say imo its OTT because her response would of been different on any other day. There were bags up on the racks above people's heads but that doesn't warrant a comment? Why not? Because you automatically assume it belongs to the person sitting under it...

BandeauSally · 23/05/2017 23:35

Yes because a terror attack hadn't just happened last week and we relax our protocols when it has been a while since an incident has happened. Obviously.

Belfastbap · 23/05/2017 23:36

Incendiaries are tiny. Cassette tape size or smaller.

user1480459555 · 23/05/2017 23:37

If and when there is another attack it could be absolutely anywhere in this country. Ok it is more likely to be in a city but it could be anywhere. Any shopping centre, any concert, anywhere there is a large number of people.

We could all stay indoors but many accidents happen in the house. We could step outside the door and get run over. None of us know what is in store for us. We get up and just expect we and our loved ones will make it through the day but many do not.

Far far more people die from road accidents, heart attacks, strokes etc. The odds are far higher for any of those causes of death/injury than a terrorist attack.

I too remember the IRA attacks only two well. Our windows were blown out by an IRA bomb going off close by when I was young - we lived in London. It was a regular thing to be evacuated from the office I worked in because of bomb scares and from train stations, tube station, shopping centres etc.

I didn't change my life in the slightest then nor will I now. I don't live in London now but go regularly with OH (at least once a month).

I do understand how people with children fear for their safety and future but there are many more things to worry about in that regard than terrorists

PlanIsNoPlan · 23/05/2017 23:37

stella - maybe that could be a starting point, I would start with the premise that blair might be responsible for war crimes - I certainly didn't support the bombing/war against 'Islam/Iraq' he started, and was given no referendum choice then, we have to live with the decisions he made in our name, I have no problem with apologizing for the mistake he made, If another country did to us as we have done, of course we would fight back.

We need to find a way to PEACE - accept we are not always right - what the majority of people want everywhere.

RoseandVioletcreams · 23/05/2017 23:39

or maybe so many jihad's have come back with loss as to whats to do and no purpose...they have flooded security and don't forget TM was home secretary when these other were stopped.

I dont see things in isolation - i see them as a product of years of slow momentum, we are seeing fruit of seeds sown when rabid hate preachers were allowed to preach on our streets and in our mosques, we are seeing seeds from syria etc...its momentum that builds up.

Confuzzlediddled · 23/05/2017 23:40

@Lockheart I've been using a similar analogy with DD, the majority of people will never even know someone caught up in a terrorist attack, bet cost friend was there last night, held hands with her mum and ran like hell - I've used the numbers to reassure her that the world is safe and as her friend is fine she's no need to be scared - that's not to say I've not discussed with both her and ds what to do in the event of an Emergency!!

Killdora · 23/05/2017 23:41

PlanIsNoPlan you pop along and have a word with them then love.

I'm sure when you apologise it will go swimmingly and then we can all be friends Smile though more likely your bloodied dripping head will be displayed on YouTube

They don't want peace. Do some bloody reading about what they do want.

Confuzzlediddled · 23/05/2017 23:41

Autocorrect Grr - bet cost = her close

BandeauSally · 23/05/2017 23:42

If you want peace from ISIS it won't be found through apologising or negotiating it. It will be through choking off their funding and killing as many of them as possible. Unfortunately the latter means (as we are seeing) thousands of innocent civilian deaths.
