to expect my landlords to provide window keys?

I have been living in my house about 9 months and, in that time, I have not been able to open the porch window. I know this seems like a silly little thing but the porch gets very hot and this causes the front room to heat up and it's just not great and I kind of feel like, if there's a window, we should be to open that window. Right? AIBU?

Have you asked the LL for a key? If so, and they've said no, what's their reason?

confuugled1 · 23/05/2017 10:55

Absolutely - there should be window locks on all windows as a security measure - and window keys provided as a safety measure for all of them.

Having said that, we moved house, there were several missing window lock keys. I was thinking we would need to get a locksmith out, assuming they were like door keys and all fairly unique... Turns out they are fairly generic - if you go to somewhere like Homebase or B&Q you should be able to get some very cheaply. Not sure if there are a few sorts or just one, but it would be worth a try.

I ended up getting a handful so I now have them in every room, plus one on my keyring, one on dh's keyring and a couple of spares because people pick up a key to open windows in the summer, use it on several windows and put it down, so you get several windows with no key and a couple that have loads!

I don't actually have any contact with LL, everything goes to through the agent. We asked when we moved in and they said there wasn't a key but we haven't pressed it or anything. I highly expect a previous tenant lost it.

confuugled1 we definitely don't have locks on every window - not even the downstairs ones. In fact, I'm pretty sure the porch window is the only one with a lock. We weren't given any window keys.
I'm going to ask the agent to provide one and, if they refuse, I'll look into trying to buy one.

Ask. They are usually generic as PP said and if you google "replacement window keys" you can often have the company identify the key you need from a photo.

EssentialHummus · 23/05/2017 11:02

And, yes, it's about £4.

RainbowPastel · 23/05/2017 11:02

They sell them on ebay.

We bought replacements from this company www.handlesandhinges.co.uk/window-handle-keys/
