Unhappy about Monday closing

Nothing, literally nothing, is open on a Monday. I'm at the stage of wanting to write to my council about it. A straw poll of my part time working colleagues reveals that over 80% of us have Monday off. WTF are all the museums and half of the cafes closed?! Why don't these places realise they are missing out on loads of business. Let me know if I'm missing something before I complain.

Um....lots of places will be closed on a Monday because it's a poor day for trade and they don't want to be open 7 days a week.

Complaining to the council seems a bit mad.

WomblingThree · 22/05/2017 21:25

So you choose to have Mondays off, which means no-one else should be allowed a Monday off in case you want to use their establishment. You do realise how bizarre that sounds, right? 🤣

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 22/05/2017 21:26

Was just about to ask if you're in Holmfirth Grin because bloody everything shuts here on Mondays.

DeadGood · 22/05/2017 21:30

I wouldn't have Mondays off if I worked part time. You get shafted when it comes to bank holidays.

londonrach · 22/05/2017 21:34

Monday closing open in france too so not just uk.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 22/05/2017 21:34

Monday is an unusual day to have off for part time office workers round here - most who do 4 days a week have either Wednesday or Friday off.

It's pretty common round here though that shops shut for at least part of Mondays.

londonrach · 22/05/2017 21:35

Common not open!! No idea how that autocorrected!

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/05/2017 21:39

Locally to me, East/West Mids border, we just get hairdressers closed on Mondays, everything else is open. I suspect its just how its always been so no one questions it, despite most people probably feeling just as pissed off about it as you!

I know that Sunday opening around here was greeted with great suspicioun!

MrsLupo · 22/05/2017 21:47

Saint Monday is a centuries-old habit among weekend workers, particularly artisans and craftspeople, which has been handed down to some extent to the modern high street - I would say most hairdressers and chip shops close on Mondays still in most parts of the country, for example. I work in a creative field and generally don't work Mondays or Tuesdays. When are the people who keep the wheels on things at the weekends supposed to have some leisure otherwise? It's bad enough people getting uppity if I don't answer calls and emails, without being told I should jolly well work or expect to field complaints people are making to the council ffs. YABU, OP.

For belfast things appear to be a wednesday

Theromanempire · 22/05/2017 22:18

I also have Mondays off (just for information, if a company does bank hols entitlement correctly, Monday is a much better day to have off than Friday Smile)

Obviously I really need to use my 1 child free day to have my hair cut, nails done etc but so hard to find salons open on Mondays.

However I totally understand why they aren't open and I would still rather have Monday off than Friday (see above Wink)

MerlinEmrys · 22/05/2017 22:20

It's the same where I live but a couple of cafes are clued up and rake it in.

I used to get pissed off about it but decided it meant I'd spend less money!
