Who put the stuff on YouTube before YouTube was YouTube?

Now everyone puts everything on YouTube. But before it was YouTube who filled it up with everything in the whole wide world?

I have no idea, but I really want to know now!!

ferriswheel · 22/05/2017 20:26

Yeah, there is another thread about weird stuff people are fascinated with. People are commenting with really obscure crap on YouTube that they like to watch. It seems really normal that you could watch the big sporting events in the last ten years, or adverts from 2005 or whatever. But who took responsibility for putting everything in the whole world on it? There surely must have been a plan?

I remember early YouTube. It was a lot of very boring vloggers. But they were also slow at taking down pirated TV shows which was fun!

I guess there are a lot of people with very specialist interests, old ads, trains or whatever and it became an easy way to share their vids. So they dusted off their old VHS tapes and over time it became the site.

Fun fact - 300 hours of video is updated to YouTube every minute!

CaoNiMartacus · 22/05/2017 21:16

YouTube is a microcosm of the world. It's startling.

EastMidsMummy · 22/05/2017 21:17

Er, no-one. Before there was YouTube there was... no YouTube.

twistyturnythings · 22/05/2017 21:18

Good question. The first thing I remember watching on YouTube was The Mighty Boosh and that was in 2005. I wonder what the first video ever on there was?

twistyturnythings · 22/05/2017 21:19

Also, how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

twistyturnythings · 22/05/2017 21:20

Thread title just reminded me of that.

QueenMortificado · 22/05/2017 21:21

YouTube has a deal whereby they offer payment (I think) to people who can get certain numbers of views on videos. I think that's right - a friend of mine gets paid for views and content.

I think that's the motivation for adding all this random old content

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 22/05/2017 21:28

I have no idea. I take it completely for granted that basically every video ever is on youtube these days, but I remember when it was all shiny and new and very very slow and everyone was slightly suspicious of it.

I remember watching a guy called TheWineKone in about 2006. He did lots of rants.

LaChatte · 22/05/2017 21:53

What was The First YouTube video?

LaChatte · 22/05/2017 21:54

Huh, random double post. Sorry.

MasuMara · 22/05/2017 21:57

YouTube is dying. Ever since advertiser pulled out then the big youtubers stopped getting paid $$$. New platforms are appearing all the time.

MissionItsPossible · 22/05/2017 22:37

YouTube is not dying, what a ridiculous thing to say. It is the 2nd most visited website after Google.

angelikacpickles · 22/05/2017 22:39

*Now everyone puts everything on YouTube. But before it was YouTube who filled it up with everything in the whole wide world?

Er, no-one. Before there was YouTube there was... no YouTube.*

This. I'm not sure I understand the question. When YouTube started there was nothing there and gradually people put stuff on it.

MasuMara · 22/05/2017 22:40

Not ridiculous at all. If people aren't getting their Adsense then they can't have YouTube as their career. They move away from YouTube and go to other platforms.

I didn't say dying as I'm tomorrow it will be gone. But yes there have been major changes to how things were.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 22/05/2017 22:44

Which came first, the youtube or the video?

Motoko · 22/05/2017 22:46

A lot of You Tubers use Patreon to get revenue.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 22/05/2017 22:49

My sister is a media studies teacher and general TV and film geek. She collects old shit out of charity shops vintage VHSs and the like and uploads the content. Gets paid handsomely for it too. She finds some really obscure and mad stuff and has loads of followers to her channel. Makes about £500 a month.

CrispyBathTowel · 22/05/2017 22:51

I too now want to know what the first ever video on YouTube was.

Titsywoo · 22/05/2017 23:03

Someone above has already posted the first YouTube video

ferriswheel · 22/05/2017 23:30

So, as to detract a bit. What exactly is this YouTube channel thing? How do you find them? Choose one? Know about them?

OP posts:
ceeveebee · 23/05/2017 00:07

eastmids and angel I think what ferris is trying to ask is - who has uploaded all the videos from the years before YouTube existed?

Like this vintage classic for example
