To really dislike downstairs loos?

Especially if they open onto the living room! I don't want anyone hearing me wee/ sort out pads/ pass wind etc. Blush Asking to use the upstairs bathroom is basically announcing to everyone that you're going to do a poo. Argh!

Ive never seen one that opens onto the living room!!

Carolinethebrave · 21/05/2017 18:06

Urgh at opening into the living room

I think a downstairs loo is very useful

ThomasRichard · 21/05/2017 18:07

I've seen them in a couple of new-ish builds where it's open-plan downstairs and someone has converted under the stairs into a loo. Otherwise, it's loos straight opposite living room doors that I really don't like.

I've never seen one that opens onto a living room either. Normally they are in the hallway and under stairs

I think they are very handy and stop people having to go upstairs, but I do get your point that if the house is quiet you can often hear the person in there, and if they are like my husband, they can stink out the whole downstairs.

However I always tell guests where the loo is and where the upstairs one is and I'd never expect them to ask to use the upstairs one. In fact if they were going to poo I'd rather they did. 😂

LarrytheCucumber · 21/05/2017 18:07

But if you go upstairs, depending on the layout of the house people can hear what you are.doing anyway. Never forgotten DH sitting downstairs with a friend of ours and when she'd gone home telling me they had heard exactly what I was doing. Blush

I have never come across this! I know there need to be 2 doors between a toilet and food preparation areas in new builds, but don't know about living areas. Sounds horrid.

ThomasRichard · 21/05/2017 18:11

I think they're great for families who can nip in if the family bathroom is occupied or just if they're busy downstairs, I just dislike them being the default or only option for guests. Bluntness I like your approach!

I would actually consider not buying a house if the loo was basically in the living room. I think that's really intrusive.

planetclom · 21/05/2017 18:11

Actually the 2 door rule disappeared god knows when because I bought a new build in 96 and it was only 2 door and the next house we removed a door because we could

flibberdee · 21/05/2017 18:12

I have a rule... no poo in the downstairs loo

SheSaidHeSaid · 21/05/2017 18:14

I've never seen one in a living room either but, anyway, downstairs toilets are ideal if you have people over regularly, especially parties/entertaining as it saves guests having to go upstairs for the loo.

Bluntness100 · 21/05/2017 18:14

I try this rule with my husband, doesn't work. 😂 However you can't really say it to guests can you.

"Hi there, thanks for the wine, by the way there is the loo, and if you're going to crap could you use the upstairs one, it's just upstairs turn right"

Not very welcoming really..😜

ShatnersBassoon · 21/05/2017 18:14

I've never had to use one in an unusual spot. Most are in the hallway away from living areas, or off the utility room. I wouldn't like one in a living room, as I'm sure nobody would. I like having a downstairs loo though.

You have to remember that everyone living in a flat or bungalow can't go upstairs for a wee, and there's no unpleasantness there.

drinkingtea · 21/05/2017 18:15

They are normally right by the front door aren't they? I've never seen one off a living room. Off a kitchen only where it's an ancient lean to bathroom put into an old house (presumably added because before that there was no indoor bathroom at all).

I don't like adult visitors going upstairs because it's untidy don't care about kids but adults who aren't staying the night don't need to be upstairs...

FroginLondon · 21/05/2017 18:17

We had this issue when we bought our house, had a loo off the kitchen/diner so we changed the door and got a proper thick wooden one, worked a treat. We live in a terrace and have a loo on all 6 floors Blush

DramaAlpaca · 21/05/2017 18:21

I would never buy a house that doesn't have a downstairs loo.

I've never seen one opening off a living room. Ours is off the utility and quite private.

As for visitors, I expect them to use the downstairs loo and it wouldn't occur to me to offer the upstairs bathroom as an option.

CowParsleyNettle · 21/05/2017 18:22

Are you sure? I though building regs stated they couldn't? Or maybe that's just into the kitchen?

InvisibleKittenAttack · 21/05/2017 18:28

I guess round here, there's few peple living in new build houses, so if the loo is under the stairs, then it's out in the hall way and not straight into the living room.

I like them, apart from anything else, you only have to get the downstairs of your house "guest ready" at short notice, the family bathroom /upstairs doesn't get visited by non-residents!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 21/05/2017 18:31

How much noise do you make when changing a pad??? I wear two pads every day and can honestly say I change them silently

MapMyMum · 21/05/2017 18:36

So glad there are some saying the upstairs isnt open to all visitors, Ive always been told Im odd for not wanting visitors upstairs!

Ours is off the kitchen but behind 2 doors and a solid breeze block wall. So that's ok. We were going to have it at the front of the house but changed our minds.

When we bought this house dc were little and a downstairs loo was absolutely top of our list. Completely ruled out the one that had it opening onto the living room though, even though the rest of the house was pretty good. Just wrong
