To really dislike downstairs loos?

Especially if they open onto the living room! I don't want anyone hearing me wee/ sort out pads/ pass wind etc. Blush Asking to use the upstairs bathroom is basically announcing to everyone that you're going to do a poo. Argh!

Ours is off the rear hallway next to the utility room, it's easy to shut off from the rest of the house with hallway doors. It's fab as whenever we have kids round in the garden they don't have to traipse though the house to go to the loo.
I wouldn't have a house without one now, but we've always had them off a hallway not a living space.

IcelandicWarriors · 21/05/2017 21:29

New build house. Ours is off the hall but the wall the toilet is on has our kitchen table the other side. No pooing allowed.

furryelephant · 21/05/2017 21:33

In my student house the toilet (and ONLY shower in a 7 bed house) was in the open plan kitchen/living room next to the TV Shock as you walked out you were also facing the shared (and overlooked) garden through large patio doors Confused I think people who design houses are on crack!

Mothervulva · 21/05/2017 21:38

I have a toilet that opens off the lounge. It's an Edwardian terrace that's been opened up (not by us), and a toilet put under the stairs.

It's quite handy for continuing to watch the telly.

MotherOfDragon · 21/05/2017 22:23

I don't think I'd buy a house without one. Never seen one in a lounge though!

MrsELM21 · 21/05/2017 22:31

We have one, I don't like it! DC's use it all the time but I usually go upstairs, ideally to my ensuite! Grin

Siwdmae · 21/05/2017 22:38

I love mine. It's off the corridor beyond the kitchen, so reasonably secluded. I would hate to only have a downstairs loo, tho.

annandale · 21/05/2017 22:46

We only have running water downstairs. Loo is in the bathroom which is between the sitting room and the kitchen, but doesn't open onto either. I love it as it means you can carry on your conversation if you want to, on the loo or in the bath. Feel like Marie antoinette.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 21/05/2017 22:48

I have two doors between all the bathrooms and bedrooms/living spaces in my house, including the ensuite which is thankfully on the other side of the dressing room.

Can't imagine having a loo open straight into the living room Shock

However a downstairs loo is very very handy, ours was a godsend during potty training!

SpornStar · 21/05/2017 22:51

We recently bought an old house that has been extended a number of times over the years by different owners. Consequently, it has a 'quirky' layout. The only bathroom in the house is off the open plan living area. I have to say that it's very handy with small kids as it's made potty training and bath supervision etc much easier and it's thankfully quite sound proof...but we plan to renovate and it will be moving to a more civilised location.

SugarnetMum · 21/05/2017 22:56

If you think living room is bad try kitchen!!

My granny has a house that in the kitchen there is a small toilet (with door obviously) still though. Urgh

PatMullins · 21/05/2017 23:05

We have one toilet/bathroom and it's one door off the kitchen. It's never been an issue Hmm

styledilemma · 21/05/2017 23:08

Before sitting down, make a 'bomb landing pad' out of toilet paper. Surely that's what everybody does? Hmm

Nobody will hear you doing a wee, or a poo.

user1492324666 · 21/05/2017 23:09

big new flash - we all wee and poo, even the queen! Don't be embarrassed!

styledilemma · 21/05/2017 23:09

that was in reply to this

I don't want anyone hearing me wee or poo

PickAChew · 21/05/2017 23:18

We only have a downstairs loo!

3 doors between it and the living room, though. Probably quieter than the thundering sound of someone peeing above your head.

sandgrown · 21/05/2017 23:23

If you have never seen a toilet off the living room watch Mrs Brown's Boys particularly the bikini wax sketch!

MsMarple · 21/05/2017 23:25

I really wish we had a downstairs loo: one elderly relative doesn't come over anymore because they can't manage the stairs very well.

SnickersWasAHorse · 21/05/2017 23:25

You know that isn't a real house right?

IndigoWendigo · 21/05/2017 23:31

I live in a studio, so the loo opens up onto... the whole living space.

I grew up in a flat. No upstairs for an upstairs loo 😂

isawahatonce · 21/05/2017 23:40

Our only bathroom is downstairs and it leads off the kitchen which I'm aware is a very odd layout. I think the house is old and used to not have a bathroom so they've built an extension to fit one in and that's the only place it could go. I would much rather have the bathroom be upstairs but don't mind downstairs loos in general. It was one of my DM's main requirements when she moved.

Imaweeble · 21/05/2017 23:41

We've just moved from a house where the only bathroom was off the lounge/dining area. It was a nightmare if anyone was visiting or when eating dinner as the only place for the table was on the wall right outside the bathroom! Thankfully we now have several loos (none of them off the living room) so we have a choice of where we go. Grin

Carolinethebrave · 21/05/2017 23:41

Our downstairs loo is also a boot room, it's off the kitchen but with a hallway and 2 doors in between boot room and kitchen so it's fine. We have several other loos but it's useful for visitors or coming in from the garden

cynthiasheep · 21/05/2017 23:52

Yes, YABU - they are so useful
for toddlers. But I'm really glad you started this thread because we are about to switch ours from being accessed through the kitchen and utility room to access straight onto living room (the only other option) and seriously having second thoughts now!
So which is worse- kitchen/loo or living room/loo???

We could put an extra wall in to make a tiny corridor between the living room door and loo door but would end up with a very cramped loo - maybe it's worth it though?

Phoebefromfriends · 22/05/2017 06:10

Definitely the worst place is off the kitchen, you don't want farts smells mixing with smells from food, that is beyond grim. Envy I'd go for the living room.
