To stray slightly from the queue?

I was shopping today and waited as two people got served. I was at the end of the queue. As the person in front was being served (it took a while!) I moved slightly to the right to look at the items they have on those displays near the till. It was at most three steps.

I turned and someone was stood behind me so I said oh sorry I was in the queue and was just looking. She didn't move so I stood in front of her as the other person was finishing. I then went to the till. She the gave me a very very dirty look!

This then got me thinking? Had I technically given up my place in the queue? What is the right thing to do?

No sorry you were no longer in the queue if you left the last position in the queue. If you have someone behind you in the queue it is permissable to make brief eye contact and apologetically say something like "so sorry I just need to quickly grab that thing..." which allows you to claim continued ownership of the queue spot.

You weren't even quickly grabbing a thing. You were browsing. Ywbu.
