To ask how much your weekly shop is?

NotAnotherUserName5 · 19/05/2017 19:00

We are a family of 5 (2 adults+3DC) spending about 130-150 on food and toiletries on our weekly shop. No alcohol or cigarettes and I tend to cook from scratch.

If you manage to spend less, how do you do it? Any tips welcome as really want to cut the bill down as much as possible.

OP, mine is similar, probably more. About £175 per week for 2 adults, 2 teens and an 11 yo. They all have adult+ appetites; one of the boys eats loads. We also cook from scratch.
When you think about it, it's £35 per person per week. I actually don't know if that is loads or not....? 2 of the DC buy some stuff at school, but DH and I and the 11 yo all have lunches out of the weekly shop.

TooMuchJD · 20/05/2017 00:20

We are 5 (2 adults, 3 kids - 17, 8 & 6).
We shop in Aldi or Asda and have a budget of £130 per week. We eat reasonably well, this buys pet food & alcohol, toiletries, occasional clothing purchases and odd pressies for birthday;s etc. here & there.
It does get a little predictable and we tend to eat the same stuff each week but we do have treats too.
Not a fan of freezing stuff, especially meat, as I am a bit weird about defrosting it, but that's just me and we only have little freezer. We buy special offers where we can and try not to use too much processed stuff but not always easy cook from scratch every night as we both work full time so we do slum it and have chicken dippers occasionally.

LadyFlumpalot · 20/05/2017 00:31

Family of four. Two adults and two young DC.

We shop exclusively at Lidl. Shopping usually comes in at £35-£40 a week, can be a little more if the pull-ups/washing powder/dishwasher tabs all need replacing at once.

We meal plan strictly, don't buy anything that is a luxury, bulk male and freeze and are sometimes down to the dregs of the fridge/freezer by the end of the week.

Have one child on free school dinners and the other has packed lunches. DH and I eat lunch at the canteen at work so we really only buy food for dinners.

Typical weeks food would be:
A spag Bol
Chicken fajitas
Shepherds pie
Fishfingers, chips and beans
Chilli con carne
Risotto
Roast dinner.

Not massively interesting, but affordable.

NoLoveofMine · 20/05/2017 01:05

Family of 5.

£250.

Topseyt · 20/05/2017 02:32

£250!!!Shock

We at 5 too, but spend less than half of that. We still eat well.

NoLoveofMine · 20/05/2017 02:43

Our closest supermarket is Waitrose and next nearest is pretty much M&S - plus I like eating Grin

In seriousness my parents do question why it is the figure it is, but it always seems to be even when trying to get as many offers as possible.

Pengweng · 20/05/2017 07:10

We spend about £100 doing a big monthly shop at ocado and then £50 ish a week at Aldi so it works out about £65 a week. That includes most things apart from my toiletries which i get from superdrug.

Never buy ready meals. Mostly cook from scratch though the kids often have fish fingers for dinner. Also includes lunches for adults but DTs have free school dinners as only 4.

Cat food bought in bulk separately at about £5 per week.

HorraceTheOtter · 20/05/2017 07:20

4 + cat. £45 - £50 per week. This includes frozen fish for the cat, wet and dry cat food, all cleaning things and look roll etc and wine. I shop in Aldi, meal plan everything and cook from scratch. Also, the DC's are small (3 and 4), I expect it to go up as they eat more. Doesn't include lunch for DS who has free school lunches or DH who is too busy lazy to make himself any for work. There is enough for them to both have lunch too though, no noticeable difference in cost in the school holidays.

Jakeyboy1 · 20/05/2017 08:06

£100 - £120 at Tesco for family of four including one in nappies and 2 cats. Normally at least £20 on alcohol. Low on meat. I am a rubbish cook so buy a few finest ready meals. I do think things have crept up massively but I partly put it down to having to buy things like nappies in my food shop which obviously didn't used to buy.

YellowCrocus · 20/05/2017 08:09

At least £100 a week, sometimes closer to £150. Two adults, 2 kids, 2 cats. This includes alcohol. We don't hold back from luxuries - DH likes to cook.

BabyBooHoo · 20/05/2017 08:10

2 adults and a toddler.

About £90 per week.

We all have different breakfast / lunches and different dinners 3 times a week due to work schedules so it could be cheaper if we all ate the same. 😬

PolarBearGoingSomewhere · 20/05/2017 08:17

I guess ours is about £80 a week for 2 adults and 3 kids. One in nappies, very little alcohol, kids all under 6. Aldi / Lidl with Tesco delivery when needed. I don't meal plan as such but like most people have a few recipes I use most weeks. We have spag bol twice a week and chilli once as DD2 is a fussy eater and it's something I know she'll wolf down!

We all eat lunch out of that (eldest DC doesn't like school dinners) and DH and I have an additional takeaway (£10-15) once a week. I am a SAHM so see friends a lot with the younger two and we take or provide treats, so it includes a lot of cakes and exotic / prepared fruit!

chosenone · 20/05/2017 08:18

We now get a bog Ocado delivery and shop within the offers and then top up at Aldi. We seem to be averaging around £120 a week. We do have a range of meals from salmon or steak to simple pasta/risottos and freezer type teas. We have aound 8 bottles of beer and 2 bottles of wine a week. Plus pet food.

PolarBearGoingSomewhere · 20/05/2017 08:26

Gosh, reading the alcohol spends I should probably say "no alcohol" really... DH got a box of Stella for his birthday in January and finished the last one last weekend. I bought a bottle of Prosecco for a friend who finished her last exam a few months ago... it's rock n roll chez Polar!

Vinorosso74 · 20/05/2017 08:33

Probably about £80 for me, DP and 7yo DD. That includes some booze. I tend to go to or get an online shop from Sainsburys every 2 weeks and get fruit, veg and milk in between.
There is cat food and litter on top but we get that from vets/online.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 20/05/2017 08:38

2 adults and 2 DC (almost 3 and 8 months). We spend £120ish a week.... mainly in Aldi but a few bits in Tesco. Have dramatically noticed that the price of our shop has gone up this last year.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 20/05/2017 08:39

Oh and two cats included in that! No booze though.

User06383 · 20/05/2017 08:41

£110 every 10 days or so from Ocado, then probably £30 a week to top up fruit and veg and lunch box stuff.

I could spend much less if we needed to economise, but we are fortunate that we don't. I don't waste food though.

Scoobydoobydont · 20/05/2017 08:45

I have no idea how people feed a family of four for less than £100 a week including washing powder, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc.

We must be doing something wrong because I reckon we spend that on top up shops/lunches at the convenience shop, never mind the main food shop!

£100 a week between four is only £3.57 a person a day!

dementedma · 20/05/2017 08:54

Scooby you are either doing something wrong or eating very well!Grin Top ups at the convenience shop and bought lunches will push your bill way up for a start. It certainly isn't easy doing it on £100, we probably go a bit over but that does include absolutely everything for 4 adults. Toiletries and household stuff are fine from Aldi or dirt cheap in pound stores or Home Bargains if you have them. Worth a trip to stock up. I use a lot of lentils and beans to bulk things out, although we eat a lot of meat too.

PolarBearGoingSomewhere · 20/05/2017 08:54

Scooby I'm sure it's the toiletries, washing liquid etc that can make a huge difference. I spend £2 a month on shampoo and conditioner, 50p pm on shower gel and £3 every 3 months on moisturiser. DH and DC use what I use. I buy a bottle of anti-bac spray, a packet of wipes, a packet of dishwasher tabs, some kitchen roll and a bottle of bathroom cleaner every 6 weeks or so at B&M for less than a tenner. Clothes washing is own brand stuff - perhaps £2 a month? C. £12 a month doesn't really feel like it impacts much.

We burn through loo roll but Lidl's own luxury one is great and 16 rolls for £4 so perhaps another £1 a week.

Flowerydems · 20/05/2017 08:55

2 adults 3 dcs about £60 per week

Same as op plus 1cat and 2kittens
Around £100-120 a week.this includes dietary requirements of dairy free and my ds on high calorie diet and never stops eating.all DC have huge appetites(anything less than cereal, toast fruit and yogurt at breakfast I am starving themHmm)

I've tried aldi but find even if put fruit and veg in fridge it doesn't keep more than a couple if days
We shop between farm foods, Morrison's,tesco, sainsbo, odd dairy free bit at waitrose and co op.local heron foods has cheap yogurts/cheese.I am not a loyal customer as means we get more vouchers through postWinkI meal plan, use frozen veg(as well as fresh)dd2 veggie.rest of us don't often eat meat.I feel for volume food eaten its a reasonable spend
