To ask how much your weekly shop is?

NotAnotherUserName5 · 19/05/2017 19:00

We are a family of 5 (2 adults+3DC) spending about 130-150 on food and toiletries on our weekly shop. No alcohol or cigarettes and I tend to cook from scratch.

If you manage to spend less, how do you do it? Any tips welcome as really want to cut the bill down as much as possible.

2 adults and 2 primary age kids and I spend £100 every week. If it comes to less I add in staples (canned tomato, washing powder etc) so that I'm consistent. Obviously sometimes I still manage to go over and other times I have to go a bit over but I try and spread it evenly over the month. That's ocado

dementedma · 19/05/2017 20:04

A bowl of soup for dinner will not fill up teen Ds. Lunch maybe, but that would be after a bacon roll or smoothie for breakfast and expectation of something more substantial for dinner ( and then cereal or something for supper)
We are 4 adults and spend about £40 in Aldi, £20 in market butcher, and then probably another £40 in top ups and school lunches. DH and I both drink though so that includes wine and beer.

primaryboodle · 19/05/2017 20:06

2 adults and one breastfed 10mth old (in nappies obvs) usually around £25 per week. All meals cooked from scratch with loads of fruit and veg (and many treats Blush) but i batchcook and meal plan the hell out of the week! It drives dp mad but makes such a difference to saving money

teacher54321 · 19/05/2017 20:09

For me, DH and 5yo Ds we usually get a Tesco delivery every 5/6 days or so which costs between £45-£65. I spend about £60 in Costco every couple of months on washing stuff/dishwasher tablets/snacks/berocca/shampoo etc as it's sooo much cheaper buying that stuff in bulk. We get takeaway around once a fortnight/every three weeks and usually have lunch out at least once at the weekend. All three of us get free or subsidised lunches so that helps keep costs lower. I don't drink, DH nips to Tesco to pick up booze if he fancies a few beers.

MovingtoParadise · 19/05/2017 20:10

£120. 2 adults, one small dog.

zoekickin · 19/05/2017 20:43

We are a family of seven(yes, five children!) our weekly shopping bill is between 50/60£. We shop at lidl, Iceland, farm foods and our local butchers.

CurlsandCurves · 19/05/2017 21:10

Jeez, you guys are all amazing. I'm ashamed to tell you what I spend on a family of 4.

Honestly, I meal plan, go in with a list and yet....

I'll keep watching this thread as I really do need tips on how to cut down what we spend.

DementedO1 · 19/05/2017 21:41

My dh went to tesco (unchaperoned) today and spent £115. He bought sweet F*#k all! Yet in supposed to be grateful he did the big shop! I'm fuming, we had to have takeaway for dinner and I'll have to go to shops again tomorrow and bring our 2 dcs with me. Then got shirty with me because I was annoyed 😂😂😂

NotAnotherUserName5 · 19/05/2017 21:44

zoekickin-wow! That's very impressive managing to budget so well. Does this include the non food bits too?

Some great tips, thanks for sharing everyone. Hopefully we can help each other on cost savings.

£80 on big shop a week for family four but we probably spend £30-£40 at local shop for goodies, this doesn't include alcohol or cigarettes (we don't smoke and I'm pregnant )

sonlypuppyfat · 19/05/2017 21:53

2 adults and 3 kids about the same as you OP DS is into weight training and he eats non stop, 6 eggs a day!

TeaAndBisquits · 19/05/2017 22:00

2 adults and 2 children.
No smokers, none in nappies anymore. Very minimal alcohol (bottle of wine a week)
Averaging £46/50 a week. Big shop in Aldi, too up shop in Tesco.

Topseyt · 19/05/2017 22:22

There are 5 of us at the moment. DH, me, 22 year old DD1, 18 year old DD2 and 14 year old DD3, who is very sporty and active and quite frankly just cannot be filled. Shock

Today I spent £93 in Tesco. That should do for a lot of the next week, with a small top up for milk etc.

melj1213 · 19/05/2017 22:25

Me, DD8 and two cats and my shopping averages at about £50/60 a week.

I buy fresh and then batch cook meals to be frozen, and take advantage of yellow stickered stuff that can be frozen and used later. I also try to do a big shop once a month which comes to about £150 and then I just do a top up of fresh stuff every week. I have DD every other week (shared custody with her dad) so the weeks it's just me and the cats in the house my top up shop can be as little as £5/10 but then when DD's home it can be a lot more.

I work for Asda so I get an extra 10% staff discount which helps but also I try to buy non perishables in bulk whenever they are on offer. In my store offers are on a rolling schedule - so there's offers on baby items every few months, the week after the "Baby event" it's pet stuff, the week after it's cleaning stuff etcetc - so I try to stock up on whatever is on offer that month when I do my big monthly shop. So rather than buying a 4 pack of loo roll every month, I buy one of the the big value 32 roll packs when they're on offer which will easily last DD and I for months and at least until the next time they're on offer ... the following month I'll stock up on washing stuff (I currently have enough Ariel liquitabs and Comfort fabric conditioner to last me about 4 months, bought in bulk last month when they were on a really good offer that meant they were significantly cheaper than buying the same amount over the 4 months)

bluechameleon · 19/05/2017 22:29

2 adults and a 2 year old. Usually £40-£50 in Tesco (that's with 10% staff discount) depending whether we need cleaning stuff etc. Plus we get a veg box delivered which is £11 I think. Then random top ups in Tesco, Morrisons or local shops.
I spent £80 tonight (£91 before discount and vouchers) but that included shoes for me, crocs and sunglasses for DS and a £10 ish food bank shop.

blueshoes · 19/05/2017 22:46

3 adults, 2 dc (13 and 10), about £70 per week at Lidl main shop and Sainsbury top up. When we did the main shop at Sainsbury, it was easily over £100 per week.

shinyredbus · 19/05/2017 22:52

Less than 100/week at Waitrose. We are 2 adults and 2 children. Includes alcohol.

Pet food is separate but thats about 100 every 6 or so months.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 19/05/2017 22:52

Around £100-£130 per week, dietary requirements.

Becca8675309 · 19/05/2017 23:30

I've started keeping a very detailed budget for the last year, we spend about £190 per week, for 2 adults and an 8 year old. Besides dinner, this includes a cooked breakfast every day for DD, hot packed school lunch for DD and hot cooked lunches every day for my DH and me, as we work from home. The budget also includes basic toiletries, cleaning products and alcohol (my DH drinks a litre of whiskey a week and 1/4 bottle cognac, plus a few beers. We get the cheaper brands of alcohol and usually when on sale. I have the occasional glass of Prosecco or Limoncello.) We get a big basics shop delivered from Tesco once a week on a Tuesday, and I walk to M&S about 4 or 5 days a week to see what is on special. We seem to spend a lot more than most other Mumsnetters despite downshifting to a lot of value brands, cleaning mainly with bicarb & vinegar, and cooking from scratch including quite a lot of slow cooker use. We also spend about £150 - £250 a month eating out, usually with offers, coupons or Tesco Clubcard points. I have cut down massively over the past few years, and feel like I am trying very hard but still seem extravagant compared to most :( Maybe because DD's favourite foods are fresh salmon, asparagus, tenderstem broccoli and anything with loads of fresh parmesan.

fuckwitery · 19/05/2017 23:33

£175 per week including toiletries and shit loads of wine

LexieLulu · 19/05/2017 23:51

2 adults, 2 children and a dog. Around £80.

One child is still in nappies (just stopped formula milk, I would say £90 with that).

We shop in Asda as its cheap (not aldi/lidl cheap but cheap enough), and get our meat from a butchers (as supermarket meat is vile).

Passthecake30 · 19/05/2017 23:52

About £100, I know it could be cheaper but there's convenience food in there as my partner and I both work FT and there's only so much batch cooking I can be bothered with.
2 adults and 2 dcs.

justgivemethepinot · 19/05/2017 23:55

Around £100. I can get it down to £80 by shopping around but that means a lot of traipsing about town.

Littledrummergirl · 20/05/2017 00:02

2 adults, 2 teenage boys and a 12yr old Dd. They are fit and active and eat for England.
We meal plan and spend between £90-£120 a fortnight for all groceries including pet food although we buy bread and milk in between shops.

fireandicecubes · 20/05/2017 00:09

2 adults & 1 teenage boy - I spend about £50 in Aldi & probably about £10 more in Asda. But that's for everything including alcohol & toiletries. DS eats loads & DH takes meals to work so if I shopped in Tesco or Sainsbury we'd be bankrupt Grin
