To get my tutor a present?

My dissertation supervisor has been great over the last year, he's been really helpful, and he's a right laugh, we've spent ages just chatting away about stuff.

I'm wondering if I should get him some kind of thank you present? Or is that not the done thing? And if I should get him something should I go for a little novelty gift or something nicer? He's an old school socialist, active Labour campaigner who likes cycling!

He'll be chuffed with whatever and you can't go wrong with a nice bottle of wine (unless he doesn't drink)! Then good box of chocs... it's the thanking that matters.

DH is a lecturer. Presents are frequent and always gratefully received - but the ones he rings me up about are the cards/emails with a petsonal thank you letter. I can't tell you how much they make his day.
I'd steer clear of novelty items too. Wine or nice chocs is a safe bet.
Although DH is a keen cyclist and would LOVE this...

Thanks for the advice. Yes, playing it safe is probably the best idea, and go for wine or chocs. I don't know if he drinks though (I reckon he probably does). And somehow don't see him as a wine drinker. Will definitely write him a nice card too.
