AIBU DH has lied by omission...

A bit of background first, DH and I have been together since Uni, for 20 years, we have one DD toddler (3 years old).

Today when we went shopping and were browsing the aisles, DH picked up MARMITE and said 'ooh, I fancy getting this and having it in toast'. I flipping hate the stuff, in 20 years he has never eaten the stuff, that I am aware and now sudden he wants it. I told him I feel betrayed that he never told me he eats this, and worse of all he gave some to DD who also ate it.

Should I LTB?

Mmm. Marmite on toast. My favourite food ever.

My whole family loves it. My brother had marmite sandwiches in his packed lunch everyday throughout his school years - that's marmite devotion.

NotQuiteJustYet · 18/05/2017 21:14

What does marmite actually taste like?

I've never eaten it but I'm currently drooling at the thought of marmite on toast... in my defence I'm pregnant and anything remotely edible invokes the same reaction.

PigletJohn · 18/05/2017 22:09

salty, with a very strong savoury flavour.

Possibly equivalent to sticking your finger in a bottle of soy sauce, and sucking it.

Presumably you don't live in the British Isles or Australia.;

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 18/05/2017 22:53

Notquite it's bitter and yeasty. Have you ever eaten Twiglets? It's like that.

I much prefer Bovril - it's also salty and savoury but with beefy goodness instead of yeasty bitterness. Can't beat some fresh bread, thickly buttered and slathered with Bovril.

Op LTB

PigletJohn · 18/05/2017 23:38

Delicious and yeasty, crammed with healthgiving Vitamin B complex.

Contains no boiled up blood from dead cows unlike the revolting Bovril.

PigletJohn · 18/05/2017 23:41

It is also believed that Marmite can foster peace in the Middle East.

(unlike Tony Blair)

PigletJohn · 18/05/2017 23:45

Marmite has numerous health benefits

(it is possible that the makers had some influence in this article)

friendlessfred · 19/05/2017 06:59

YABU. Marmite is one of the best foods ever.

friendlessfred · 19/05/2017 07:03

It's also a good midge and mossie repellent.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 19/05/2017 07:14

Has anyone tried the M&S version??

I love real Marmite, but those fuckers clear the jar out in seconds.
I spotted it in Markies, and it's not in an obvious sort of jar, so I could just stash it in the fridge, out of the way and they would not know what it was.
But obv don't want to buy it if tastes like vegemite shite.

YABVU!

Also I bet like all marmite haters you will not have the ability to spread the correct amount on toast! I've lived with my OH being like that for 30 odd years. I've resorted to buying individual pots, at great expense!

Far from you LTB, your OH needs to reassess what he wants to do moving forward.

HTH

bumblingmum · 19/05/2017 09:31

5 pages of heated Marmite discussion, impressive!
I LOVE Marmite, my DH and kids hate it which is great because then I never have to share it.
Vegemite and bovril are all Marmite wannabes and dont come close to the real thing.
I add it to spag bol or shepherds pie for extra flavour and no-one notices, mwahhaha!

nannybeach · 19/05/2017 09:33

Yum, its good for you!

Lightship · 19/05/2017 09:35

Do you kiss the mouth that ingests Marmite????

Gag.

yourcarisnotadiscovery · 19/05/2017 09:44

I was going to say YBU but to involve children behind your back is underhand and cruel - LTB and get DD to call Esther Rantzen ...

caz323 · 19/05/2017 10:25

I bet he will love twiglets too!

NotQuiteJustYet · 19/05/2017 10:37

I'm from the UK but come from a long line of marmite haters so I've never thought to try it as it's never really been on offer to me.

Oooh, I think I might have to try some, it sounds very much up my street. Blush

BooRadley35 · 19/05/2017 11:38

YANBU its a disgusting sludge. My twin sister loves it - cast iron proof that she is the EVIL twin Grin

Belle1616 · 19/05/2017 11:40

Marmite is even better with peanut butter.... tastes like dry roasted peanuts... yum

MusicToMyEars800 · 20/05/2017 12:51

Belle I can't believe I have never tried that concoction < of to get marmite and peanut butter >
Caz I LOVE Marmite, but twiglets Envy

unapaloma · 20/05/2017 12:54

*YABU. It's the nectar of the gods.

More like wasp spunk.*

Ooh I like marmite, I might like that too, do they sell it on amazon :-D?

zoobaby · 20/05/2017 13:10

Introduce your DD to vegemite.

That'll learn him!

Jux · 20/05/2017 13:19

MusicToMyEars, have you tried:

Marmite and honey
Marmite and jam
Marmite, Philadelphia and strawberry jam
Marmite and cheese toastie
Mix liberally with butter and used as a spread for all sorts - birthday party sandwiches to roasting fish
Put a blob of marmite in meat dishes like bolognese, or stew
Tiny smear of Marmite in vinaigrette

I could go on. My grandmother used to buy enormous tins of Marmite from the NAAFI and decant it slowly into Marmite jars. It was used in so many things......

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 20/05/2017 13:39

Best breakfast hangover cure ever alert!!

Make a cheese and marmite sandwich (Properly- preferably with real butter!)
Heat oil in big pan.
Dip sandwich in a beaten egg until thoroughly coated.
Fry until sandwich is golden brown and cheese has melted.

Soooo many calories....sooooo good Grin

OP you are so unreasonable I can't even find the words to express just how horrified I am that your poor DH has to live with such a Marmite hater. He should LTB immediately, and take his Marmite with him! Grin

MusicToMyEars800 · 20/05/2017 14:02

Jux I love marmite in my Bolognese and chilli I also sneak it into sausage casserole too Grin
I love pasta with marmite mixed in, topped with cheese and put under the grill for a few mins.
Cheese and marmite on crumpets
Marmite, cheese and salt and vinegar crisp sarnies
but I love good old thick white bread toasted, slathered with lurpak slightly salted butter and marmite
Marmite straight out of the jar, I practically ate jars of the stuff when I was pregnant, it's a good job my OH likes marmite Grin
