Grass

So, AIBU but do we need to support those that grass a little more to make it socially acceptable to come forward with relevant information?

I'm watching Little Boy Blue currently; but I think it also blows to whistle blowing in NHS etc.

Thoughts?

Ideally yes, but how you actually do that in practice when there's a whole community that an individual feels threatened by if they do come forward I don't know.

@spam88 - I'm not entirely sure, I guess that's one of things I was hoping could be discussed. Do you think society has changed it's mind about these actions since high profile cases like Rhys Jones?

What support are you suggesting?

Calling it grassing, with all the negative connotations that has, probably isn't the best way forward if you want to encourage it

I guess there are probably two different issues. There are those who think being a grass would make them worse than the people who committed the crime (to paraphrase one of the calls to the police on Little Boy Blue) so a huge change of culture is needed there. And then there are those who are too scared of the repercussions.

Personally for me the government can never be a victim of a crime. Secondly if there is no victim, then it's not really a crime.

Therefore depending on the situation reporting people for a crime can do more harm as it erodes the trust within the community, because everyone is spying on each other.

I watched little boy blue.
I felt really proud(not sure if proud is the right word?) of Kevin and the mum of the boy who wouldn't leave the house, I don't remember her name. I could see what a difficult situation they were in. I hope they haven't had any repercussions from being truthful. I know Kevin was given a deal wasn't he? Was it a new identity? I don't know the answer, but they were very brave.

With all the election posts I thought this was about the Lib Dems legalising cannabis!
