To be massively unimpressed by the Autism Speaks adverts

Come on, MN. Why are you displaying adverts from such a hateful, ignorant organisation? One that advocates a cure, eugenics, is hated by so many people on the autism spectrum and fervently believes in the anti-vax movement?

Urgh.

Typical Mumsnet really isn't it.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 14/05/2017 14:08

It's naive to think that these kids have no hope

along the lines of what... drinking diluted bleach and dicking around chidlrens diets and using suppliments with dangerous levels of Zinc and Iron...

MrsPeelyWaly · 14/05/2017 14:10

I don't think it's patronising to point that out

Of course you don't. In fact I would put money on you not thinking there's much wrong with anything you say. That your opinion is the only valid opinion.

There are people here doing a far better job than you are of getting a message across and I'm reminded of the old saying - You catch more flies with cider than vinegar.

Nope! Along the lines of having a healthy non processed non gluten or dairy diet, getting their thyroid tested and treated as well as some gut infections.... There you go! Who talked about bleach?

AndNowItIsSeven · 14/05/2017 14:11

I have three children with autism, the youngest I cannot answer for, but if my older two could take a hypothetical pill that made them no longer autistic they would.
Asd causes them so much daily struggles, on a good day we see glimpses what life would have been like for them then without asd.
It is just as acceptable for individuals to hate their asd as it is for others to embrace it.

user1491572121 · 14/05/2017 14:12

I had NO idea that Autism Speaks were like this! Thank you OP!

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 14/05/2017 14:13

i can sell them false cures and stuff if you like?

wizzywig · 14/05/2017 14:15

I put Treating Autism in the same camp as Autism Speaks. The organisation name speaks for itself.

JigglyTuff · 14/05/2017 14:16

Whether some people would like to 'cure' their children's autism is kind of here nor there. Autism Speaks is a highly controversial organisation that advocates some very dodgy treatments with the aim of 'curing' autism which many people - with autism or not - find highly offensive and deeply dubious.

For that alone, it's inappropriate to have as an advert on MN.

Albadross · 14/05/2017 14:16

But it's not acceptable for an organisation to demonise autism without calling out that some people don't feel they're a burden or that they should try and change themselves.

Bottom line is if society was more accepting and tried harder to be flexible then many more people on the spectrum would feel less like their autism was a barrier. There are loads of things about me that I know don't fit, but they wouldn't cause me as much of an issue if other people didn't view them as they do. Autism Speaks plays into that.

What are you on about? Because some parents seek medical help you compare them with whitening black people?

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 14/05/2017 14:20

Because some parents seek medical hel

It's not medical help....

there is nothing medically proven about any of these treatments.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 14/05/2017 14:22

They are proven to be dangerous though..But who cares.

WhereTheFuckIsElsa · 14/05/2017 14:26

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber what is proven to be dangerous, can you pls give an example? What is it? Treating allergies? Avoiding trigger foods? Treating hypothyroidism or epilepsy? Or treating Klebsiella in the gut? What is dangerous? People here don't know what they are in about, you're so against anything remotely different to what you're used to, you immediately brand it dangerous and useless. That's plain ignorant ..

Fanjo I agree about chelation and I am not talking about chelation!
And no my sister's kid wouldn't improve with time he was severe case - within a year and a half he's pretty much NT with the help of doctors, naturopaths and a forums of fellow parents..

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 14/05/2017 14:28

What is it? Treating allergies? Avoiding trigger foods?

YES the way these are "treated" becuase a child has AUTISM rather than food allergys.

Treating hypothyroidism or epilepsy

In children without these problem... YES.

What is dangerous?

It all can be.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 14/05/2017 14:29

None of those are autism though Elsa!

You cannot cure or treat autism because it isn't a disease.

Dr James R. Laidler, the guy who started the gluten free crap in 2005, has now debunked his own research and findings.
