To think it should be clearer?

So I only eat British meat - I wouldn't be rude enough to refuse to eat a meal if it was made with non British meat, but I personally would only buy British meat. Reasons include I want to support our farmers, i think it's better quality and I just don't want to buy something that's been imported when I could get it from mr farmer down the road etc. I also prefer to shop local if I can help it so boyfriend and I decided to try the butchers down the road (normally I'll get meat from greatbritishmeatcompany). He went in the day before to have a look and specifically asked the butchers where their chicken was from and he said Dorset. We went in today and bought 5kg for £25 as that was the advertised deal. Got home and checked the pack which said slaughtered and packaged in Poland.

AIBU to assume that all the chicken was from the UK? I never thought that the meat in the deal might have been from elsewhere. I've still supported a local business so will eat it on this occasion but should I mention something to them? its definitely not as good quality as what I would normally get and only a few £ cheaper!

Slaughtered and packaged in Poland doesn't mean it was a Polish chicken... Animals get shipped about to be slaughtered, sometimes it's cheaper to do that. So exported alive, slaughtered and processed, meat shipped back to the UK.

It's a bit unreasonable to assume that a chicken born and bred in the UK is better quality than a chicken raised elsewhere. There's a massive range of standards even within the UK.

I would highly recommend Jonathan Safran Foer's book Eating Animals if you are keen to understand the meat industry and what to look out for.

I eat only British red tractor (farm assured) too. It's FAR higher welfare than cheap crap from the EU and beyond.

The butcher did not call the chicken "British". He said it came from Dorset. According to a pp animals are sometimes transported to be butchered. Provided we take the phrase "come from" to mean "where it was born and bred", the butcher told the truth, and so did the packaging.

The butcher didn't tell the truth, it's not British meat if it was transported to and killed in Poland. Which in itself is extremely unlikely.

Just because a pp states it, doesn't make it true.

The uk cannot by law be transported that distance to be slaughtered and killed. It was polish chicken.

Aaaaaarrrrrrrgh! The butcher did not say the meat was British. The word "British" did not feature in the conversation according to the OP.

No one spoke the word "British". This word was not pronounced by anyone. The OP thought from the response that it was British. That's understandable, but the butcher did not call the chicken British.

WHERE IS DORSET??, or did you mean Dorset, in Poland? are you being deliberately obtuse?

Presumably they meant that's where the person they buy chicken from is based...... And that would possibly be a truthful answer to the question

You didn't ask where were the chickens reared and slaughtered did you but a rather more vague question that could (whether deliberately or not) be 'misinterpreted''

You didn't check the pack before leaving the shop either.

OP, you realise a lot of meat tends to come from Northern Ireland where the standards aren't far off what you probably dislike (horse burger anyone?). You're better buying direct from your local (non chain) butcher.

Where do you think Dorset is? Is there a particular county inside the UK called 'British'? I've not been there.

Dorset/British thing. a chicken can be born and bred in Dorset, slaughtered in Poland and you're allowed to say it's from Dorset.

The same chicken can't be classed as British meat because of where is was slaughtered.

Born in Dorset, makes it from Dorset.
Slaughtered in Poland means it can't be advertised as British, despite being born in Dorset.

Nobody is going to transport live chicken from Dorset to Poland to slaughter them and then ship them back. Will you use some common sense!
