Left my toddler in the car to pay for petrol - I could see him while paying - and a stupid woman called security cause my 3yo was crying and shouldn't be left in car...... Eh??
WTAF? She's never seen parents leave kids in the car to pay for petrol? WTF is that about?

Ds was probably scared by the silly woman.

Justanothernameonthepage · 11/05/2017 16:45

Children don't normally cry without reason

Well mine threw a crying tantrum as I told him there probably won't be snow on the beach on holiday next week. He also cried for 30 minutes when he discovered I couldn't buy him a magic train full of cake. At 7pm on a Sunday. He had a full on sobbing 10 minute tantrum when I told him he couldn't go on a motorbike to the moon right now. He's cried when I told him we can't drive to the top of big Ben, he couldn't be my mummy or visit Nanny right this second. I mean they are all reasons....but I wouldn't say they were serious reasons (he's 2 btw)

NotYoda · 11/05/2017 16:45

Oh no!

People are now coming saying that

a) they take their child into the petrol station and
b) petrol station security guards exist

This will not do at all

innagazing · 11/05/2017 16:46

Sailor
And my child's pocket money doesn't always stretch to the cost of the petrol. .. Especially if they've already paid some of it towards my litre bottle of gin.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 11/05/2017 16:47

Is it half term somewhere?

wigglesrock · 11/05/2017 16:47

I've been in a petrol station with a security guard, in fact I think I've been in a few. You can't pay cash at pay at the pumps - I prefer using cash to debit cards - debit cards make my money magically disappear!

Wando1986 · 11/05/2017 16:48

Right... in what world are people living where they walk half a mile to pay for their petrol. Because that's the only reason I can think of anyone would take their kids out the car to pay for petrol.

WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU TAKE A CHILD OUT OF A CAR TO PAY FOR PETROL ON A FORECOURT. LET ALONE ONE THAT IS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE SECURITY.

User24689 · 11/05/2017 16:48

Where I live in Australia it is a massive no-no to leave a kid in the car anywhere at all, including a petrol station forecourt. I haul my toddler out every time I go to pay and it's a pain in the arse but I would definitely get judgy comments at the very least if I didn't!

innagazing · 11/05/2017 16:48

Your child sounds bitterly disappointed with you as a mother Grin

Allabitmuchisntit · 11/05/2017 16:48

innurendo - yabu - why haven't you got your kids filling up too?

Do things properly woman.

Is it frowned upon because the weather is so stifling hot?

Tazerface · 11/05/2017 16:51

I never even knew people even thought about taking their kids out the car when paying for petrol until I joined MN.

Medeci · 11/05/2017 16:52

Can't remember the last time I had to leave the car to pay for petrol, there's always plenty of Pay at Pump spaces.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/05/2017 16:55

Was it a petrol station or a service station op?

Tootsiepops · 11/05/2017 16:56

Not being a GF, but do people leave babies in the car too? I've always taken my LO (18 months) in to pay. I have an overactive imagination and worry about explosions / robbery / car jacking / joy riding / car crashes / petrol fumes etc.

I'm on medication Blush

JustWantedPetrol · 11/05/2017 16:57

Yes it's a small waitrose and while in the queue I noticed her park next to me and going in without filling up
On my way out he stopped me and she was behind him, he was ok about it but he did say "you know your baby is crying!!" I fucking panicked thought immediately I fucked up
For whoever wants to know about my toddler:
he's crying if I don't give him chocolate, he's crying if I do give him chocolate,
he's crying if it's raining or if it's nice and sunny
He's almost 3 and the stubborn type!!!

Nice to know I didn't break the law, thank you!

innagazing yes I think that's probably where it stems from. Obviously I would never leave a kid in the car in summer even for a minute. But it is winter now and I know response would be the same.

The indignation on this thread has interested me... Total cultural difference!

NotYoda · 11/05/2017 16:59

Ah, waitrose explains it all.

HildaOg · 11/05/2017 17:00

She didn't know if you could see him or that you were only there for petrol. Who's to say that you weren't going to spend ages picking other things to buy?

If I saw a toddler alone and crying in a car, I'd get involved too. Especially in this weather where they can quickly overheat. If he's crying, he's either scared or sick. You can't leave your babies alone and expect people to think you have the sense to keep an eye on them or not leave them too long.

GreatFuckability · 11/05/2017 17:01

tootsie when i passed my test I had a baby, a 1 year old and a 2 year old. there is no way on this earth i was pulling them all out for the 2 mins it took me to get petrol. so they stayed in the car.

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 11/05/2017 17:01

flogging

Yes totally evil to leave a 3 year old having a weep for the 2 minutes it takes to pay for petrol. Hmm

will no one think of the children

Get a grip

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 11/05/2017 17:03

TaxerFace no one does in RL just on mumsnet

HepKestrel · 11/05/2017 17:03

waitrose have petrol stations ??

brasty · 11/05/2017 17:05

I wonder if the commenters talking about how awful it is to have a 3 year old crying, remember or know what 3 year olds are like? Some cry so easily. And for reasons you can do nothing about. If I saw a 3 year old crying on being left in a car by a petrol pump, I would think nothing of it. Although I might try and distract them with a funny face.
