To hate hearing the word SUPPER

Even at my ripe old age I don't know exactly when or what it refers to.

It makes me cringe at the pretentiousness whenever I hear it used. Only slightly less if elderly posh person!

Yep, another northern bird who calls a 'before bed snack' supper. Never heard the word used for main evening meal.

TheExuberant1 · 11/05/2017 22:13

Hate the word, makes me cringe. I say dinner.

HoldBackTheRain · 11/05/2017 22:17

YABU, my 91 year old nan always used the word supper - she used to play the piano in pubs at night so would have her diner before she left and then come home about 11.30pm and have her supper. She's the most unpretentious person you could ever meet! She'd play all the old songs like Blackpool Rock, Henry 8th, My Old Man's a Dustman etc. And she bloody loved her supper after a hard night's work!

Haha. Yes Op. I have the same reaction.

Beeziekn33ze · 11/05/2017 22:25

I need to make some cheese on toast after reading this thread!

dorisdog · 11/05/2017 22:34

Yep. I find it cringy. But I think it's regional rather than class based? Also, someone mentioned the word 'holibobs.' I agree entirely - it also gives me rage. Then again, I call my dog 'poggle chops,' which I'm sure annoys the pants off people, so....

AbernathysFringe · 11/05/2017 22:36

It's an annoying word somehow. IME only heard it by 'posh' people.
I was brought up saying Breakfast, Dinner, Tea but have changed into Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Still sometimes say Tea.

AbernathysFringe · 11/05/2017 22:38

wtf is holibobs?
I guess these varied but still correct words or jokey words like that are infinitely less annoyed than people saying things actually incorrectly, like sat instead of sitting, or wary instead or weary.
