To continue to boycott Eurovision

It is something from a different age, when technology was in its infancy and when the war was a very recent memory.

Now it is something that just allows petty nationalism and/or hatred of some countries to have an outlet. Even before Brexit we never came close to winning, yet music from British artists sells by the bucket load across many parts of the continent. Just go into a record shop in France or Germany, for example.

Our licence fee can be better spent (or reduced), and if there are still is a demand for it, then one of the commercial channels can broadcast it.

AIBU therefore to continue to boycott it?

I love the awfulness of it. I'm really excited for tomorrow.
Also as pp said it's much enhanced by turning on the subtitles.

Code42 · 12/05/2017 21:31

How can people say the UK never has a decent song?! What about Skooch? Skoosh? The ones who had the innuendo-ridden one about "flying the flag" with the budget airline props?

The was officially the business: a proper Eurovision piss take, and they were totally robbedGrin

BaggyCheeks · 12/05/2017 21:42

We don't win because we are shite, but I don't watch it for the UK entry. I love it - it's funny, and over the top and cheesy.

No surprise Brexiters don't want to keep it - it's fun and frivolous.

GetInTheFuckingSea · 12/05/2017 21:45

Also: Bucks Fizz. That skirts moment was a seminal piece of Eurovision history. Props to the UK right there.

I think the main thing I like about it is that it's unashamedly joyful. Plus you do get the odd moment like last year with Ukraine where people make a pertinent point, but it's all done in an atmosphere of inclusivity and we still get to clap along with the other stuff.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 12/05/2017 21:50

I'm so looking forward to it!

I like our song this year. It's not very Eurovision but I like it.

hiimmumma · 12/05/2017 21:53

By 'boycott' do you mean you just won't watch it?.. if so then I 'boycott' and awful lot of TV.

Anyway you sound like you're basically sulking because we never win. As we say to our DC - it's the taking part that counts.

SuperBeagle · 12/05/2017 21:54

There's definitely an element of politics to the voting. There's a reason Azerbaijan and Armenia never vote for each other, why the Scandi countries do, why the Eastern block exists, why Poland does well most years etc.

Whisky2014 · 12/05/2017 21:56

I love it! So yabu

stuntcamel · 12/05/2017 21:58

I don't boycott it as such... just can't be bothered to watch.

Mind you, I did enjoy it a few years back when Lordi won Grin

PickAChew · 12/05/2017 21:59

It's not the same without Terry Wigan.

Now that would be an interesting presenter!

I've not watched for a few years because the boys make it difficult. This is our first post brexit vote Eurovision and I'm actually slightly curious as to whether our standing improves or not, as a result.

I'll find that out on Sunday, though.

MelanieCheeks · 12/05/2017 22:00

There's a political element to the voting, sure, but if you look st the range of winners over the last 12 years you can see the range of different countries, east and west.

And yes I've had the great joy of bring at a eurovision live, in Vienna, where the city embraced the euro love with enthusiasm, and the crowds singing along to Mans and Heroes was spine tingling.

PickAChew · 12/05/2017 22:01

And yes, thanks to DS1, we boycott most of what's on TV that isn't certain programs on CBBC, these days! The only one we insist on (because it really is best live) is The Last leg - which he moans about then sometimes ends up watching a bit of anyhow!

SuffolkNWhat · 12/05/2017 22:07

All I have to say is:

Love Love Peace Peace

Wink
GetInTheFuckingSea · 12/05/2017 22:10

I used to be able to play A Little Peace on the recorder!

Alfieisnoisy · 12/05/2017 22:15

We will be watching but we won't be sober.

Great fun guessing who will vote for who.

They hated us before Brexit so am expecting a big fat raspberry being blown to us tomorrow night.

There will be alcohol and nibbles here 😂

TheoriginalLEM · 12/05/2017 22:27

i used to love it as a child and loved Terry Wogans cynical commentary. He used to get quite cross 😆

Its shite now and it has graham Norton who i used to like. Now i can't listen to him

TheoriginalLEM · 12/05/2017 22:28

Getunthefuckinsea-i see your little peace guitar solo and raise you Little peace on the stylophone

pandarific · 12/05/2017 22:30

Are you seriously getting butthurt that the UK never wins Eurovision..? Really? Really really??

GetInTheFuckingSea · 12/05/2017 22:34

Ooh stylophone
Now there's fancy.

GetInTheFuckingSea · 12/05/2017 22:38

Everyone thinks that David Hasselhoff brought down the Berlin Wall but actually it was a simple peasant girl called Nicole and her enduring message of hope.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 12/05/2017 22:42

It's as fun as you make it.
We always have a party in honour of our dear friend. Our parties are a pale shadow of his.
In order to enjoy eurovision, you need a sense of humour and good company (and realise we have no hope of winning because, amongst other things, our song is rubbish).

MissionItsPossible · 12/05/2017 22:42

Is my memory serving me right or am I going mad? because I seem to remember one year both Terry Wogan and Tara-Palmer Tomkinson doing the commentary together. She was her generally giddy, funny drunk self but I can't understand why she would be "co-hosting" Confused

VenusOfWillendorf · 13/05/2017 05:34

Brexit is going to be great for Eurovision ... when Scotland and N.Ireland leave the UK, then they and Ireland can all vote for each other Grin

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 13/05/2017 05:55

Never watched it until one year and then I went I into labour watching the scores!

Now I often tune in just for e the scoring only as a bit of a nostalgic trip.

bigmack · 13/05/2017 07:54

Ireland are usually very generous to the UK in Eurovision- probably won't even get those points after brexit!
