To continue to boycott Eurovision

It is something from a different age, when technology was in its infancy and when the war was a very recent memory.

Now it is something that just allows petty nationalism and/or hatred of some countries to have an outlet. Even before Brexit we never came close to winning, yet music from British artists sells by the bucket load across many parts of the continent. Just go into a record shop in France or Germany, for example.

Our licence fee can be better spent (or reduced), and if there are still is a demand for it, then one of the commercial channels can broadcast it.

AIBU therefore to continue to boycott it?

PMSL at Terry Wigan as well Grin

Cornishware · 09/05/2017 20:30

I too miss Terry, the dc have inherited my love of it and it is one of few nights a year they are allowed to stay up late. This year inspired by mn I think we are going to do themed food. Yes we won't win, this year particularly I would imagine, but as we tell the dc you don't always have to win to enjoy doing something. Boycott away, I've never watched a game of football, each to their own.

EllaHen · 09/05/2017 20:31

It's one of the few times I get the family spreadsheet out.

EdmundCleverClogs · 09/05/2017 20:31

I think the OP is on to something though, I'm going to start melodramatically say I'm 'boycotting' everything I don't like. I'm currently boycotting:

Everything that's on ITV
The Conservatives
Celery
Twitter
Hoovering
New Bake Off
Hollyoaks

SmokeCloak · 09/05/2017 20:32

I get bored with the voting so only watch the singing.

yummycake123 · 09/05/2017 20:33

YABU. If you don't like it, don't watch it.
I watch it- it's so bad it's hilarious.

BelleTheSheepdog · 09/05/2017 20:34

I'm deffo boycotting the new Bake Off come to think of it.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 09/05/2017 20:39

YABU. It is tat-tastic.

Laiste · 09/05/2017 20:42

We'll be there with our spread sheet for voting as usual on Sat. Artistic presentation + song Grin It's a fun evening and gradually turns into grim determination to stay focused and awake to the end after a few drinks.

Good tip is: put the subtitles on. Then you can tell what utter drivel they're all singing.

3littlebadgers · 09/05/2017 20:43

Ooh I'm getting giddy at the thought of all of the things I'd like to boycott. Work and a tendency to put on weight are up there. As is mascara that leaves bits everywhere and traffic jams.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 09/05/2017 20:54

I think the fact you pay to bypass the semi final and go straight through is a big cringey and unfair, it's not showing a lot of faith in your acts but then you aren't alone, money talks and when that happens it's probably pointless hosting it at all

Belindarocks · 09/05/2017 20:58

At the Euro gymnastics I went to the other week they had the Romanian entry for the closing ceremony. It was a rap yodel! Was fab!

EdmundCleverClogs · 09/05/2017 20:59

Nocabbageinmyeye we don't 'pay to bypass' the semi-finals, we (along with the other 4 'big' countries), pay so it can be on every year. Giving up 5 final spots so millions can watch it every year seems a small price overall, to me at least.

Australia being part of it though, that's bloody stupid.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 09/05/2017 21:03

This thread has reminded me it's on. Loving Moldova - catchy.
The semi finals are best I think. More rubbish songd which for me is the whole point.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 09/05/2017 21:05

Quite like Icelandic Gwen Stefani.

Scholes34 · 09/05/2017 21:15

But it's one of the best nights of the year. We always have a Eurovision party with friends. The voting is always predictable - when the kids first started watching it with us they were amazed at how we could guess who'd give points to which countries.

And we have no intention of winning! We could walk it if we really wanted to. But we don't. We'll just continue taking the mickey out of it courtesy of our European neighbours, ie the Irish (thanking Mssers Wogan and Norton).

kaitlinktm · 09/05/2017 21:34

Haven't watched it for years - is it any good?

megletthesecond · 09/05/2017 21:37

Oh yes kait. As silly as ever.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 09/05/2017 21:46

But you bypass the semi finals Edmund so you pay your way through along with four other countries, you can dress it up whatever way you like, so you and four other countries pay for the good of everyone else and going straight to the final doesn't matter at all, of course not Wink

Oysterbabe · 09/05/2017 21:46

Do what you like, I freaking love it :)

SuffolkNWhat · 09/05/2017 21:48

Well aren't you a delight?

For those who enjoy the cheesefest do join us over in Telly Addicts, semi final 1 just finishing but more on Thursday before the final on Saturday

TalkinPeece · 09/05/2017 21:50

YABVVVVU

Eurovision is mindless escapism and the better for it

Conchita was amazing
Goordi was fab
