....going to be tried for blasphemy? I was so looking forward to it!

Tulips you summed up nicely what I was going to say.

why on earth does Fry think we need to know his views on religion anyway?

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2017 15:59

"why on earth does Fry think we need to know his views on religion anyway?"

a) because he was asked in an interview.
b) because he is a patron of the BHA.

He's not half as clever as he thinks he is. He's certainly no Oscar Wilde. Though I agree he would probably have thought he was, if he'd been dragged to court.

Couldn't agree more, most overrated celebrity going.

eddiemairswife · 09/05/2017 16:13

One of the 'celebrities' that is an instant switch-off for me.

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2017 16:18

"He's not half as clever as he thinks he is"

Such a gloriously British response!

I love Stephen. I'm glad he isn't being prosecuted because I think he'd find it very distressing.

bigmack · 09/05/2017 16:24

It all sounds like an episode of Ally mcbeal

JuneFromBethesda · 09/05/2017 16:25

I hadn't paid much attention to this story, but reading some of the responses on here I looked it up - and my admiration for Stephen Fry has just increased as a result.

CormorantDevouringTime · 09/05/2017 16:26

I'm sure there's a hundred ambitious Irish barristers crying into their Guinness at this news - it would have been a cracking job for two of them.

RuggerHug · 09/05/2017 16:30

Another Irish person who cringed at this. Do we really need to be made out to be more of a joke with our religious laws to the world?

fridaynight · 09/05/2017 16:35

He's overrated ...

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/05/2017 16:38

Some one posted on here about Stephen Fry that he is what stupid people think clever people look like. Summed it up for me!

Ceto · 09/05/2017 16:39

why on earth does Fry think we need to know his views on religion anyway?

What a bizarre question. He was specifically asked about them in a broadcast TV interview. Was he supposed to sit back and say "You don't need to know my views on that?" I suspect that, if he had, you'd be accusing him of arrogance even more.

Ceto · 09/05/2017 16:39

Tulips, why is the quote offensive? Yes, he doesn't pull his punches, but what is there that is actually inaccurate about what he says?

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/05/2017 16:41

The man who made the initial complaint about Mr Fry is said to have been satisfied that Irish police had investigated the matter fully and told detectives he was merely doing his civic duty in reporting it.

Taken from The Independent.

So Ned Flanders is doing the rounds in Ireland then? I love the fact that the investigation was dropped because not enough "outraged" people could be found :o

"I love Stephen. I'm glad he isn't being prosecuted because I think he'd find it very distressing"

I don't love him. I think in some aspects he is a complete git. But in this particular context he would have handled it brilliantly- and shown blasphemy laws to be anachronism they are in an entertaining way!

zippey · 09/05/2017 16:48

Stephen Fry is awesome, I love the early stuff he did with Hugh Lawrie.

You aren't necessarily stupid or intelligent if you like or dislike Stephen Fry. But generally speaking, stupid people tend not to like him.

badtime · 09/05/2017 16:51

zippey, in my experience, very clever people are a bit 'meh' about him, and it generally the mediocre who love him.

^ See! other people can make insulting generalisations too!

blackteasplease · 09/05/2017 16:55

I find him somewhat over rated too. Not that I think his stuff is rubbish - I really like his books and early comedy - but I think very few people deserve to be rated as highly as he is.

I'm with Franky Boyle on celebrity atheists too.

blackteasplease · 09/05/2017 16:55

Obviously I don't agree with having blasphemy laws. And I also suspect he would have enjoyed being prosecuted.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 09/05/2017 16:58

"generally speaking stupid people tend not to like him"
🙄

grannytomine · 09/05/2017 17:00

badtime if there was a like button you'd get my vote.

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2017 17:06

"I'm with Franky Boyle on celebrity atheists too"

Celebrities are allowed to be atheists, you know! And Fry has been a spokesperson for BHA for a very long time.

I luffs Stephen Fry. He's done so much to raise awareness of bipolar disorder.

stumblymonkeyreturns · 09/05/2017 17:11

I don't see him as overrated though, more underrated as everyone is always going on about how much they hate him....?
