She was interviewed on radio about voting in the election, sounded like a young lass. She said "my vote will be based on discussions I've had with my parents".

It's fucked me right off and I feel angry whenever I think about it

Vanilla Grin

TwoDaysLater · 06/05/2017 14:53

....but why are you angry that she is going to discuss it with her parents. What's wrong with doing that, maybe her parents give great advice 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shockers · 06/05/2017 14:56

Did she mention what newspaper her parents take?

This could swing it for me...

ProseccoBitch · 06/05/2017 14:56

I think I understand why what she said pissed you off, but as PPs have said I don't think you understand what pretentious means.

Bunnyhipsdontliegrl · 06/05/2017 15:00

"Of course I do, I still think she was being pretentious - like she thought her parents decision was the most important thing to consider. I hate people like that"

So you don't actually know what pretentious means

hmcAsWas · 06/05/2017 15:01

"I'm not one of these "I'm a Tory because daddy was a Tory and it's how things are!" types"

Ah, so she was posh then (the 'daddy' reference gave it away) - and that's why she's rattled your cage

melj1213 · 06/05/2017 15:02

pretentious prɪˈtɛnʃəs/ adjective - attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than is actually possessed.

How is saying she's going to vote based on chatting to her parents pretentious?

Naive maybe, but not pretentious.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/05/2017 15:06

She is entitled to vote for whomever she wants for whatever reason she wants.

Like I said upthread, it's better than asking a lot of internet strangers on an overwhelmingly left/liberal site who you should vote for.

It's none of anyone's business who others vote for, or why.

Bea · 06/05/2017 15:10

It's because she was posh!! As pp have said!

multivac · 06/05/2017 15:11

umm...

To be really angry at this pretentious woman?
NancyWake · 06/05/2017 15:12

My guess is her voice was lah di dah. If she'd said 'EE bah gum I'm vortin laik me parents' she'd be less likely to be dubbed 'pretentious'.

sparechange · 06/05/2017 15:19

So you don't know what pretentious means then?
Otherwise, great thread, OP.

BertrandRussell · 06/05/2017 15:22

There are quite a lot of posh Tory voters, OP!

HappyAxolotl · 06/05/2017 15:23

Using long words to try to sound clever and failing badly at it while calling other people pretentious. Gold star effort! Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 06/05/2017 15:25

I spoke to a woman on council election day who said she didn't know yet how she would be voting because it would be her husband deciding and he hadn't told her yet!

scottishdiem · 06/05/2017 15:27

I came here to post that very thing multivac. Grin

neonrainbow · 06/05/2017 15:27

I have no problem at all with democracy.i have a problem with people voting tory because i think only the "im alright Jack" types vote Tory and i think they're generally selfish people. But hey, its ok for you to have your reasons for voting the way you are, but not ok for this woman on the radio? That's a little bit hypocritical isn't it?

mygorgeousmilo · 06/05/2017 15:29

What neon just said

Amperoblue · 06/05/2017 15:33

I think the Op has used the word correctly.

The young woman is trying to give the impression that both her parents know best and therefore has come to her voting conclusion after (them, more probably) discussing it with her.
Rather than another young person who hasn't had the benefit of either discussion or wise parents.

AKsuited · 06/05/2017 15:39

Sounds like you don't know what pretentious means tbh

AKsuited · 06/05/2017 15:42

Also there's nothing to be angry about.

Maybe take an anger management course.

OlennasWimple · 06/05/2017 15:44

It's going to be a bloody tiring election campaign if we get threads like this every day for the next 32 days

2014newme · 06/05/2017 15:48

Not pretentious.
Get a dictionary.📖

AlternativeTentacle · 06/05/2017 15:49

Personally I'm a Tory supporter

Gosh, I am very sorry to hear that. I hope you get better soon.

SnapJack68 · 06/05/2017 15:49
