To be really angry at this pretentious woman?

She was interviewed on radio about voting in the election, sounded like a young lass. She said "my vote will be based on discussions I've had with my parents".

It's fucked me right off and I feel angry whenever I think about it

And it can be argued that it's no worse than starting one of the millions of threads on here to say 'who should I vote for?'

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/05/2017 14:27

So you didn't like her voice/accent? Because I'm struggling to see what could be 'pretentious' about the content of it

sparechange · 06/05/2017 14:27

Do you know what pretentious means, OP?

HeyCat · 06/05/2017 14:28

I have literally no idea why this has annoyed you, it's honestly a pretty bizarre reaction.

A lot of people get tongue-tied/nervous when being interviewed and that comes out in odd ways, it's entirely possible she's not smug or snooty at all in real life.

Why not give her the benefit of the doubt and just get on with your day?

Shockers · 06/05/2017 14:29

I'm guessing she sounded posh. Did she sound posh?

APaperMe · 06/05/2017 14:30

I heard this, she wasn't being pretentious in the slightest, she was actually being self-deprecating insinuating she should perhaps do more research rather than rely on what she's heard her parents say, which is what she does at the moment.

DreamilyLookingOutOfTheWindow · 06/05/2017 14:30

Quiet Saturday afternoon on MN then lol

PinguForPresident · 06/05/2017 14:32

It's a bloody stupid way to choose who you vote for, but it's not pretentious.

APaperMe · 06/05/2017 14:32

Obviously this is if we're referring to the same person, I heard it on bbc radio one news.

SnapJack68 · 06/05/2017 14:33

Ah at least your son doesn't have the same mindset hey!

EBearhug · 06/05/2017 14:34

Do her parents both vote the same way? Mine never did. Their discussions did inform me to some extent, but I still had to make my own mind up. (Plus I never lived at home at the same time as being old enough to vote and there being an election.)

RedheadLover · 06/05/2017 14:35

Seriously, look up the definition of 'pretentious'. It's not the same as 'irritating'.

HallowedMimic · 06/05/2017 14:38

If APaperMe is right OP, there isn't anything even remotely pretentious about what the woman said.

Do you actually know the meaning of the word!?

mygorgeousmilo · 06/05/2017 14:40

You clearly don't know what pretentious means..... plus you're a Tory..... and you're here moaning about nothing.... Hmm

Zhan · 06/05/2017 14:40

Of course I do, I still think she was being pretentious - like she thought her parents decision was the most important thing to consider. I hate people like that.

It probably was the same interview

OP posts:
neonrainbow · 06/05/2017 14:42

Hopefully she and her parents aren't voting tory.

Zhan · 06/05/2017 14:42

Nothing wrong with being a Tory - each to their own as long as people actually have reasons behind those decisions! I'm not one of these "I'm a Tory because daddy was a Tory and it's how things are!" types

OP posts:
neonrainbow · 06/05/2017 14:43

It doesnt actually matter why you're voting Tory. The outcome is the same.

HallowedMimic · 06/05/2017 14:43

It sounds as though she was saying the very opposite of what you are implying though OP.

She was acknowledging that she hadn't given voting as much thought as she might have.

She was almost rebuking herself.

FrenchLavender · 06/05/2017 14:44

I'm not understanding why this was pretentious either.

What/who do you think she was pretending to be? Confused

I think an awful lot of young people just blindly follow their parents into the same vein of politics. If you've heard the same message rammed home at you since you were a small child then it takes some doing to actually turn it on its head and ask yourself if perhaps your parents might just be wrong or misguided.

One of my children has polar opposite politics to me, and although I think he's a deluded twit at least he has formed his own half baked opinions. My other child shares my politics and I honestly think they've been arrived at totally independently of anything I or DH might have said over the years as we don't tend to talk much politics at home or around the children. We've always encouraged them to explore all angles and arrive at their own conclusions, the same with religion.

Zhan · 06/05/2017 14:45

neonrainbow, do you have a problem with democracy?

OP posts:
VanillaSugar · 06/05/2017 14:46

Actually, she said "My parents and I will be discussing this at the Oxford Union whilst the chateaubriand is being cooked by Raymond Blanc. I'll wear my favourite Stella McCartney, in fact, she'll be another guest at my little soiree hosted by Anna Wintour and Amal Clooney; the charity auction will be in aid of displaced Llamas which don't get enough organic wheatgrass to eat. My DCs, Tassimo and Viennetta, will be providing the musical accompaniment on their antique harpsichord and viola which has been in the family for 16 generations. Oh, and we'll vote Tory as we always do."

TwoDaysLater · 06/05/2017 14:48

My DH is super brainy, very considered and sensible and very knowledgable about politics. Everyone in the family including my own parents and my siblings ask for his opinions. He wouldn't dream of telling people how to vote and won't necessarily tell people what he is voting himself but he can highlight the main issues brilliantly and help you come to your own conclusion. User99573864 · 06/05/2017 14:48

OP why don't you find us a link to the original interview so we can see if we can work out what you mean.

Because I don't understand how voting for the same part as your parents is pretentious.

Zhan · 06/05/2017 14:50

Ok maybe pretentious was the wrong word in relation to the content of what she said.

But I'm still angry about what she said.
