To put my 6 week old on Soya Formula?

lifesjoys · 05/05/2017 17:02

I'm dairy free as I can't quite cope with it, it gives me a bad stomach.

My son is on cow & gate comfort as he struggles with constipation but it hasn't helped.

I come from a family with dairy intolerance, I have a brother with a protein allergy from cows milk.

I also do not believe that as humans, we should be using another species milk, it's weird (but that's my opinion).

So I've been looking at SMA Soya to put my son on, wibu to make that decision myself without consulting a gp?

Without doctors advice yabu

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 05/05/2017 17:05

YABVVU to do it without medical advice.

dementedpixie · 05/05/2017 17:06

No as soy formula isn't recommended as a first choice formula for babies under 6 months and especially not for boys. There are other dairy free formulas available but probably need a prescription for them. If you dont think that cows milk based formula is good for human babies then isnt that is why humans also produce milk?

dementedpixie · 05/05/2017 17:07

As in no, don't do it without medical advice

namechangingagainagain · 05/05/2017 17:07

a boy? I wouldn't.
I might be out of date but there is some concerns about phyto-oestrogens . There is a reason soya milk is said to help with menopausal symptoms

Iamastonished · 05/05/2017 17:08

"I also do not believe that as humans, we should be using another species milk, it's weird (but that's my opinion)."

So, why aren't you breastfeeding then?

Pinkheart5917 · 05/05/2017 17:09

You need to seek medical advice on this. As the child is so young, I wouldn't be doing anything without speaking to a medical professional first

watchoutformybutt · 05/05/2017 17:09

I assume you've tried breastfeeding then? It might be worth looking at some breastfeeding support if you've had problems. It's very possible to feed again at this stage.
You would be unreasonable to put him on soya without professional advice. If you have these beliefs about milk from a foreign species you might be interested in donor breastmilk.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 05/05/2017 17:09

Yabvu to do it without medical advice. And from a paediatrician, not a gp

www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/soy-health_b_1822466.html This huff post article as a starting point for example

lifesjoys · 05/05/2017 17:10

I would love to give him breast milk until the age of 1, however, I didn't produce more than a bottles worth a day.

I would be happy to seek out donated breast milk but feel it would be frowned upon!

Don't link to mercola as he's a crackpot!

Chocolateorangegoblin · 05/05/2017 17:11

Why not go to the GP and get cow's milk free formula then? Soya is not recommended as a main drink for under 1s.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 05/05/2017 17:11

Is re-lactation or donor human milk a possibility?

Iamastonished · 05/05/2017 17:12

"however, I didn't produce more than a bottles worth a day."

How do you know how much you produced? Were you expressing?

QuestionableMouse · 05/05/2017 17:12

Try the lactose free if you have allergy worries. Soy isn't great for boys.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 05/05/2017 17:14

Babies work breasts far better than pumps so what you can express isn't an indicator of what you can produce. Why not seek help to get you BF again? LLL would help.

dementedpixie · 05/05/2017 17:14

Lactose free will not help with dairy issues as lactose is the sugar and dairy allergy is linked to the protein in the milk. They are separate issues

lifesjoys · 05/05/2017 17:14

I would love to attempt to express my own breast milk again but feel given it being 6 weeks, it's far too late?? He's been on formula since around 2 weeks.

Where could I go to get donor milk that's reputable??

I am happy to discuss with a gp however it would need to be on prescription, I can't imagine they will hand that out willy nilly given that my brother had an actual allergy & it took my mum months.

I also don't want to take prescribed milk from a child that really needs it now, hence looking for one I can buy off the shelf at a reasonable cost

Then you should be breastfeeding. If you've chosen not to, the next best thing is normal cows milk formula. It is dangerous and harmful to use soy milk formula for a very young baby without a very good reason.

Consult a professional, who will hopefully dissuade you.

blackcatlover · 05/05/2017 17:15

My elder DD was put on soya milk at 4 months old by the GP. She is now 20 though so advice might have changed. I would seek medical advice first, there might be other milks on the market. Not sure if they still provide them on prescription.

DontFundHate · 05/05/2017 17:15

Not too late for relactation. The amount you can express is no indication of the amount of milk you're producing

lifesjoys · 05/05/2017 17:16

I went into expressing solely because he just couldn't get on with breastfeeding, he'd suck then cry & do that for a good 20-30 minutes.

OP posts:
DontFundHate · 05/05/2017 17:16

Is there a reason why you wouldn't feed directly from the breast?
