To think that some people live in too big houses?

Lots of people live in (in my opinion) already big houses yet they want to move into even bigger ones.
I see so many families where all the children have their own bedrooms, bathrooms, big bedroom for the parents, guest room, study, living room, and yet they never seem to be satisfied and want to move into a bigger house. They all want playroom for the children. What's the point, when they could easily play in their bedrooms or the living room? There are houses where everybody has their own level, plus bathrooms on the landings, more toilets than family members, and yet they want Buckingham palace. It's good to have enough space and not be in each other's pockets but am I the only one who thinks these people are greedy and unreasonable? You don't need to live in a mansion to be a happy family.
Not to mention those houses where entire rooms are never used, lots of space is taken up by massive stairs and there are parts of the house that are just walkways.
What's your take on it?

Daffodil,

Farms/businesses are completely different kettle of fish though, your DHs family surely would have bought this farm even if the house which came with it was half the size?

Incidentally, the happiest part of my childhood (for 10 years on and off) was spent living with my sister, parents and grandparents in a sunny cosy two bedroom apartment, some years my sister and I slept on the sofa bed in the (walkthrough) living room, and some years in the little bedroom, and parents were in the living room....when guests came to stay, sister and i slept on the floor or in two armchairs put together.
There was only one WC and one separate bathroom. My sister and I absolutely loved living there and for me it's the only home I miss out of all I've lived in since then, including many times the size.
Of course, I appreciate it must have been very different for all the adults (however my parents moved in with grandparents more out of choice, they had their own apartment in the suburbs, but commuting to work from there would take 3+ hours daily and they would not be able to share the childcare). Just saying children up to teenage years at least are normally innocent and not materialistic, don't need much and their happiness doesn't depend on own bedroom or even own bed. ☺️

To be fair most housing in the country is so small compared to America or Europe, however for someone coming from Japan (I have two Japanese friends and we discussed it) a standard British semi might seem to have more than is ever needed. Of course you get used to the space quickly. ;)

Everyone should have space.

In an ideal world, for me, would be giving the people who don't have enough space to live in, more of it, not resenting people for having space because we don't like other people having nice things.

I have to agree with you, OP - sort of.

YANBU in the sense that I think we accumulate so much crap that we need bigger and bigger houses to store it all. And then we aspire to even bigger houses so we have some space and then we buy even more crap to fill the empty space! If we all lived in sensibly sized plots then we'd probably find we were happier, spent less time cleaning, having clear outs of old stuff and shopping for new stuff, and could actually enjoy our lives more. Not to mention the effect the construction and consumerism has on the planet!

But coming back down to earth for a second, YABU to go on the attack against people who aspire to have bigger houses! In many houses, especially new builds, there's no bloody storage. Playrooms are an excellent way of letting kids let off steam and spread out in their own space. Utility rooms are a must!
