Never really thought about this until the news today. In my younger days I was a republican and am still unsure about coming generation of the Royal Family, but I think I will miss him.
He has been part of my life all my life. He provides some funny moments but also champions some very important issues. I didn't realise until a few years ago how much he has done to help young people. A long time ago he stopped playing fields being used for housing. He saw conservation issues long before most of us did.

His D of E literally made my son. DS was busy going nowhere when he got an adult apprenticeship, had to do D of E gold. DS showed some leadership on the expedition, got noticed and now has a fabulous career.

Funny how you can think one thing (my younger self wanted him gone) and realise when he retires you actually liked him and value his contribution to society.

I thought this was going to be another trans thread.

No I won't miss him. Barely registered him if I'm honest. I'm not a Royalist.

GlacindaTheTroll · 04/05/2017 18:25

We certainly need his diplomatic skills - for at least the rest of the Trump years.

Though they do seem to be suggesting that he might appear from time to time, so perhaps there's hope.

CaoNiMartacus · 04/05/2017 18:28

Is that his drag name?

mpsw · 04/05/2017 18:31

No, not a drag queen. He's Royal Navy, not the Marines!

Though as he's Lord High Admiral (bet that has a really blingy uniform!) I suppose he covers both. So maybe he does deploy with a frock.

Prince Harry appears to have taken in part of that role (the naked bar).

ifeelcraptonight · 04/05/2017 18:33

I really don't like the Royals and I feel as if I shouldn't like Philip because he is so undiplomatic with his attitude and voicing his opinions but there is something really likeable about him somehow. And Harry is his pure double.

Jengnr · 04/05/2017 18:34

What exactly is he retiring from? I doubt there'll be a difference anyone will see.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/05/2017 18:36

What exactly is he retiring from?

Being the face of casual British racism? Presumably now we have Boris Prince Philip's position is now redundant.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 04/05/2017 18:38

I like him. Love the royals.

Not sure there had to be an announcement though.

GlacindaTheTroll · 04/05/2017 18:41

There had to be an announcement, simply because there has been when others have relinquished duties.

And to stop endless deathbed speculation every time he's not by the Queen's side.

ForalltheSaints · 04/05/2017 18:42

I will not miss him but I am sure the Queen will.

UppityHumpty · 04/05/2017 18:44

I don't really care either way.

Twinklyfaerieglade · 04/05/2017 18:51

Just found out he "invented" carriage driving 40 years ago, at the age of 56. I just love that spirit "ok I am not physically capable of x any more, so I will do y"
Think it's to do with losing what we are used to. My dad is only a little younger and FIL died yesterday at 94. Neither were/are posh or privileged but he reminds me of them.

strawberrypenguin · 04/05/2017 18:55

I will. I think he's great and has been such a huge support to the Queen over the years as well.

Jengnr · 04/05/2017 21:37

Yeah, not sure how she'll manage those holidays and handshakes on her own.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/05/2017 21:44

I think the DoE award showed great vision. He did carry out 110 engagements last year which isn't bad for someone in their 90's.

PansyGiraffe · 04/05/2017 21:46

Sounds like a really crap beauty pageant.

Tapandgo · 04/05/2017 21:52

He has contributed nothing beyond living free off the taxpayer (and making offensive remarks to people while supposedly representing Britain)

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 04/05/2017 21:54

I like The Duke, he's absolutely marvellous.

DonaldStott · 04/05/2017 21:58

I thought this was going to be another trans thread.

Grin

If he'd have been in a normal role and passed one of his bigoted remarks that some people seem to find so endearing, whilst 'at work', he would have been sacked for gross misconduct.

KreamyKoala · 04/05/2017 21:59

Won't make one jot of difference to me. Free loader.

MN is a funny old place! Say anything detrimental about people on benefits and everyone goes crazy, but the royals are living free off the tax payer and making no contributions! It's hilarious in its hypocrisy! He has 100+ official engagements last year in his 90s whereas countless losers in their 20s 30s and 40s can't get to the job centre once a week to prevent themselves being sanctioned!

ilovesooty · 04/05/2017 22:02

I really can't understand why so many people find his offensive remarks so amusing.

Thankyou for proving my point! Not a whisper of complaint when a 94 year old man is called a freeloader though!
