Never really thought about this until the news today. In my younger days I was a republican and am still unsure about coming generation of the Royal Family, but I think I will miss him.
He has been part of my life all my life. He provides some funny moments but also champions some very important issues. I didn't realise until a few years ago how much he has done to help young people. A long time ago he stopped playing fields being used for housing. He saw conservation issues long before most of us did.

His D of E literally made my son. DS was busy going nowhere when he got an adult apprenticeship, had to do D of E gold. DS showed some leadership on the expedition, got noticed and now has a fabulous career.

Funny how you can think one thing (my younger self wanted him gone) and realise when he retires you actually liked him and value his contribution to society.

No I will not miss the opinionated old man, he doesn't strike me as being very nice.

dinosaursandtea · 04/05/2017 22:56

He's an entitled, privileged racist living off the British taxpayers. Nope, won't miss him at all.

derxa · 04/05/2017 23:01

I love him. he's exactly like my late father. an old bugger Grin

mrwalkensir · 04/05/2017 23:04

guy on R4 this morning talking about all the stuff Phillip has done for conservation, but that he sees it as just something that he enables rather than wants to take any credit for. Looking back at his childhood/siblings/WW2 stuff, quite apart from his own career..........he's achieved a hell of a lot on the quiet whilst being slagged off as a freeloader

Rachel0Greep · 04/05/2017 23:08

No way is he 5'4", that's my height. He is much taller.
Have never met him... Grin

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2017 23:09

I have never really given him a thought, so no I won't miss him. Confused

CurlieSue · 04/05/2017 23:15

Will not miss him one bit. I never liked him but mind you I think we should get rid of the whole royal family. I cannot bear the fact there are thousands of homeless people who desperately need our money when we are pouring millions into the royal family who spend most their time languishing in luxury and hunting innocent animals.

Tapandgo · 04/05/2017 23:17

shoes
"........at the expense of their wants......" How can you know what they wanted to do? I doubt any of this huge family who enjoy massive privilege and wealth would swap their lives to work daily in a factory, office, mine or any other job for that matter, or want to wrestle with limited budgets to pay mortgages, fuel bills or home repairs. They are clueless about real life and choose to potter around a few issues as a side interest to their lives. You can tell his real character when he speaks to people - rude, racist and crass remarks in abundance. In real life he would have been sacked!

antimatter · 04/05/2017 23:23

I thought this thread was going to be about some unsavoury revelations about the Duke Grin

Violetcupcake · 04/05/2017 23:26

So isn't there going to be a D of E award anymore?

Hamsolo · 04/05/2017 23:28

Well...

Miss Prince Phillip?
SleepingTiger · 04/05/2017 23:40

Who here would step up and change places with him 70 years ago?

Anybody?

EdithWeston · 05/05/2017 07:20

"isn't there going to be a D of E award anymore?"

Yes - the Wessexes are going to be new sponsors.

As although he was taller as a younger man, he's certainly 5ft4 - or even less (yes, I've seen him IRL and he's tiny these days, shorter than me)

(And the royal family are ion 'benefits' just as every MP is. Payment from public purse can be wage, pension, benefit or in, this case, sovereign grant)

Toadinthehole · 05/05/2017 08:44

His one-liners are all the funnier because he can't be crucified by people with no sense of humour.

RoseGoldProsecco · 05/05/2017 08:45

Worst drag act ever ;)

LaurieMarlow · 05/05/2017 08:46

If you think objecting to repugnant, racist, sexist, classist remarks is 'having no sense of humour' then I know exactly where I stand with you, thanks very much. Our moral worlds are very different.

TeenAndTween · 05/05/2017 09:04

The DofE Award wouldn't exist if he hadn't spearheaded it originally.

My Great Uncle taught him at prep school.

The Royal Family also bring in quite a lot of tourism money to the UK economy. Better a Royal Family as figure heads than elected presidents.

Riversleep · 06/05/2017 12:20

When he married the Queen he was a homeless navy officer from an ex royal Family that had been overthrown and were wandering around Europe living off their rich relatives. He hit the jackpot when the Queen fell in love with him. Probably quite a few people in his position would have swapped with him 70 years ago. FWIW I think him and the Queen have done their duty admirably. Its not their fault they are the Royal Family. They haven't been great parents though judging by the way their kids have turned out!

kmc1111 · 06/05/2017 12:57

The Royal Family doesn't bring in tourism dollars. Their ancestors do, the history does, but no one comes to the UK and looks at the outside of BP because the Queen's somewhere inside. Well, except for a couple of dozen Royal loonies, but they'll all be gone in the next decade or so and I doubt Charles or William will inspire anyone younger to take up that 'hobby'.

There'd be more tourist dollars to be had if they were ousted and their residences were fully open to the public (though not that much since BP isn't exactly Versailles).
