Never really thought about this until the news today. In my younger days I was a republican and am still unsure about coming generation of the Royal Family, but I think I will miss him.
He has been part of my life all my life. He provides some funny moments but also champions some very important issues. I didn't realise until a few years ago how much he has done to help young people. A long time ago he stopped playing fields being used for housing. He saw conservation issues long before most of us did.

His D of E literally made my son. DS was busy going nowhere when he got an adult apprenticeship, had to do D of E gold. DS showed some leadership on the expedition, got noticed and now has a fabulous career.

Funny how you can think one thing (my younger self wanted him gone) and realise when he retires you actually liked him and value his contribution to society.

I was hoping he would say something spectacularly rude to Trmp. Now I will just have to hope that the queen will get her corgis to bite Trmp's ankles while she curses him out...

Obsidian77 · 04/05/2017 22:09

I love the idea of a Miss Prince Philip beauty pageant! Grin

susanboozan · 04/05/2017 22:09

At 95 years old he can say anything (and he has)

He can rest now and live his life out of public eye.

What gets me is who would know the difference TBH, and why the announcement?

BarbarianMum · 04/05/2017 22:10

Never been a fan of the man but i don't blame him a bit. He's mid 90s fgs- deserves a rest. Am still hoping he's outrageously rude to Trump (in a private capacity) though.

moreslackthanslick · 04/05/2017 22:15

I agree with you jelly

he seems such a jovial man, his humour not always worked of course but my late dad said lots of inappropriate things too, different era.

DofE award has done so much for youngsters.

Thingsthatmakeugoummmm · 04/05/2017 22:16

Not in the slightest!! So anti royalty

Didyoumeantobesorude1 · 04/05/2017 22:16

I met him about ten years ago. He was extremely well informed, asked penetrating questions and made some very good jokes. He had engagements at five other places that same day. I was impressed.

EssentialHummus · 04/05/2017 22:17

Another DofE fan here.

ShoesHaveSouls · 04/05/2017 22:19

I have always had a massive soft spot for Philip, and ever since watching the Crown, have imagined him as Matt Smith - which makes him even better Wink

ShoesHaveSouls · 04/05/2017 22:20

So, yes - I will miss him Sad

95 - that's pretty good service, and always in the shadow of Queenie - something that would have been difficult for him back in the day.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 04/05/2017 22:21

DS has been chosen to be in the guard of honour for his retirement present action next week. I am so proud of him.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 04/05/2017 22:21

Present action? I meant presentation.

Lanaorana2 · 04/05/2017 22:22

I've also met him and he was remarkably funny and clever for someone over 90. OK, expensive docs can do a lot but he must have been making a phenomenal effort of mind over body to keep going so long at such a high standard of entertainment and charm. I'm truly impressed and grateful.

He is about 5 foot 4, which surprised me, with proper blue eyes like a lot of the royals.

CricketFishieDHAndI · 04/05/2017 22:24

An other trans thread :D

DH is a bit of a... what's the English word... a royalist? I personally, as somebody that isn't from the UK, have somewhat different views.

But yes indeed, I think I will actually miss him. I'm actually surprised by that.

cdtaylornats · 04/05/2017 22:25

He has contributed nothing beyond living free off the taxpayer

Other than fighting in the Royal Navy in WW2.

DaveTheDesigner · 04/05/2017 22:27

He's 6ft. You met someone else.

LaurieMarlow · 04/05/2017 22:30

Mmm, we're a lot better off without his racist, offensive remarks if you ask me.

CurlieSue · 04/05/2017 22:35

I could not care less about him. I thought he had already 'retired' so today's news was no news in my opinion. What the hell has he ever done anyway can anyone answer that?

SuperBeagle · 04/05/2017 22:36

The Duke of Edinburgh was a big thing at my school in Australia, and it's a big thing at my DC's school too. I think he's been guilty of putting his foot in his mouth a few times (but find me someone who's 95 who hasn't), but nothing more than that. He's championed some great causes and initiatives.

I like the royals.

Tapandgo · 04/05/2017 22:39

jelly the '100 plus official engagements' involve nothing but turning up in chauffeur driven comfort, outfits chosen and laundered for him and no household bills or chores to return to. It's been up to him what he has chosen to do and would have given up decades ago if his wife had a competent heir to pass on 'official engagements too'. (and somthe pantomime continues for another generation)

I've no time for anybody living off taxpayers money without making a reasonable contribution to society for it. However, royalty is institutional freeloading gaining benefits and privilege simply as a result of an accident of birth, not merit.

BlondeBecky1983 · 04/05/2017 22:43

I will! I believe those two have made a massive contribution all their lives. It will be a sad day when they're gone.

Riversleep · 04/05/2017 22:44

5'4? How tall is the Queen? 3 ft?? He towers over her!
I suppose we need the announcement because hes not accepting any more invitations, but God, the wall to wall coverage because a 95 year old has decided he doesnt want to traipse around the country doing pointless plaque unveilings and shaking hands. Can you imagine what will happen when he dies? What have they left to say??

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/05/2017 22:45

You people waxing about the Duke Of Edinburgh Award, you do know he doesn't actually do much?

Yeah he hands out the gold ones and whatnot but he's not out there organising trips or answering emails at DoE HQ.

The scheme would be the same with or without the Duke although they'd probably have to be a bit more creative with the marketing... and come up with a new name.

FreddieFlowerdew · 04/05/2017 22:45

No I won't miss him at all but I love the title of the thread and only clicked because I was expecting a trans thread.

ShoesHaveSouls · 04/05/2017 22:48

What you say may be right, Tapandgo - "right" - but DofE and Queenie have executed 'duty' to the absolute tee. Duty to their country, at the expense of their wants. DofE has supported the Queen and worked for the country for 70 years - albeit with a few minor indiscretions - but he has done his duty , and made personal sacrifices.
