To get the rage with clapping?

Not applause. That's fine and a great way of showing appreciation.

It's the "clap along with the music" which makes me cringe. It's like being back at pre-school. Gives me the rage when the kids do it and they now know better than to clap along to the car radio. Gives me the rage even more when some crappy performer tries to encourage audience participation by getting people to clap.

Just NO.

'The entire fecking audience was expected to get up and dance in the stalls. '

Oh my lord. I would have crawled under my seat and refused to come out, and cringed myself half to death while doing it

Yes I hate it when I see grown women get excited and they do that silly clap to themselves. Can't stand it.

TheLambShankRedemption · 04/05/2017 17:14

Studio audience clapping along to theme tune of crappy Saturday night TV family entertainment show.

I want to kick the screen.

On a par with noisy eaters. Clappy bastards.

Violetcharlotte · 04/05/2017 17:58

From a performers POV though, clapping really helps! DS does performing arts and he says they love it when the audience clap along to the music. They feel like the audience are enjoying themselves and it adds to the energy.

limitedperiodonly · 04/05/2017 18:16
makes me cry every time I hear it. With joy and regret that I can't clap, skip or stomp my feet in time
PumpkinPie2016 · 04/05/2017 18:17

YANBU - clapping along really irritates me Angry

It's so cringy Angry

Teabagtits · 04/05/2017 18:18

YANBU op!!! I getthe rage with he sheep like behaviour of crowds ruining perfectly good musical renditions with their incessant desire to hit one hand off the other.

I once read somewhere that people find it infectious and get very uncomfortable not clapping in such situations. I'm not one of those.

Nothing wrong with a bit of anger!

I love Double Dutch

CormorantDevouringTime · 04/05/2017 18:43

The lovely Harry Connick Junior disapproves of his audience clapping on beats 1 and 3, but because he is the epitome of Southern good manners, he doesn't stop playing or swear at them - he simply slips in a stealthy 5/4 bar to force them to clap on 2 and 4.
www.classicfm.com/discover-music/music-theory/audience-clapping-wrong-beat/

That doesn't help the fact that it's a bit cringy though.

Dixiestamp · 04/05/2017 18:46

Love that Harry Connick Jnr thing (on beat clapping annoys me too!). I kind of agree with the op about being 'forced' to clap along- if I feel like it, I will, but spontaneously!

Capricorn76 · 04/05/2017 19:23

You're not alone.

It really reminds me of ITV for some reason.

maplepixie · 04/05/2017 23:34

What about when people clap on the plane? Never heard it myself but apparently some people clap when it landsHmm

toffee1000 · 04/05/2017 23:36

I've experienced people clapping when a plane lands. It might be a cultural thing. Clapping along with music I get, clapping when a plane lands I do not get.

maplepixie · 04/05/2017 23:40

@toffee1000... Apparently it's to do with clapping the pilot....

Ceto · 05/05/2017 00:20

Strictly is one of those shows where the audience is told to do that as well as whooping. Not everyone wants to do this. If you look carefully at the audience shots you can usually spot at least one person with their arms folded and a cats bum expression.

That's interesting. I've always been particularly irritated by the regularity with which they do standing ovations, generally accompanied by Brucie or Tess exclaiming "Look! They're on their feet!!!!!!" as if such a thing has never happened before. I've always entertained fantasies about putting glue on the seats so they can't do it. However, if the reality is that they're only doing it because they've been told to, I'll transfer my revenge fantasies to the producers.

GetInTheFuckingSea · 05/05/2017 00:26

For the first and possibly only time in my life, I'm with Harry Connick Jnr - nothing worse than a venue full of people clapping along on beats 1 and 3 like a load of Christians at an Alpha convention.

GetInTheFuckingSea · 05/05/2017 00:28

And I am glad he is taking positive and effective steps to eradicate this pollution.

Batwomanrisesagain · 05/05/2017 00:37

The clapping on the plane seems to be getting popular again, I thought it had died out in the 80's but the last 5 flights I've been on this year have all clapped!

queenoftheknight · 05/05/2017 12:19

I used to be in a band that would, every so often, add an extra beat to the bar to get the audience clapping off the beat again.

Most amusing.

Mutiny0nTheBunty · 05/05/2017 13:11

No problem with clapping along to music but thought I'd use this as an excuse to have a mini-rant about my own (admittedly unreasonable) clapping irritations:

1 - Clapping when the plane lands

2 - Clapping at weddings - it's not a fucking performance! (I actively asked people not to clap at both my weddings and the bloody registrar looked at me like I'd asked people to drown kittens instead)

3 - Wooping when clapping. Not even wooping, just an irritating "wooooo" noise with everything. I could understand it if it followed a particularly spectacular performance (like clapping+ if you will) but people do it for the most mundane reasons it's lost all meaning

And breathe....

My God that was cathartic Grin

5foot5 · 05/05/2017 13:36

Oh but what about Fantasia on British Sea Songs? (The one they usually play at Last Night of The Proms?) You have to clap along to that because part of the fun is that the orchestra / band usually get to the end first.

SnickersWasAHorse · 05/05/2017 18:04

That 5foot5 is the single exception.

TinfoilHattie · 05/05/2017 18:12

Don't think it is the exception. Last Night of the Proms is enforced jollity at its finest.

OP posts:
alfagirl73 · 05/05/2017 18:25

I don't mind it at times if it's a) during an appropriate song/moment in a concert/show and b) it's in proper syncopated rhythm.

What does completely give me an irrational rage with clapping though - are the people who, for reasons best known to themselves, insist on doing this weird clapping movement where they turn their hands different ways with each clap! WTF is that all about?! Clapping is a pretty boring action however you look at it - doing that won't make it any more exciting! It makes me cringe to my very core!

GetInTheFuckingSea · 05/05/2017 18:44

In Russia, audiences clap in unison by way of applause. The dirty pinkos.
