To get the rage with clapping?

Not applause. That's fine and a great way of showing appreciation.

It's the "clap along with the music" which makes me cringe. It's like being back at pre-school. Gives me the rage when the kids do it and they now know better than to clap along to the car radio. Gives me the rage even more when some crappy performer tries to encourage audience participation by getting people to clap.

Just NO.

I think it's lovely going on a journey with my family and we are all singing along, clapping or "chair dancing

You think it's lovely. I think it's like being water boarded. Horses for courses. And i'm a perfectly good driver thank you.

Colonel I'm a republican so have never lined up for any Royal with flags, and I'm definitely not harmless.

Oh the fucking foot tappers!? They clearly don't know tapping their bastard feet shakes the entire row of seats. That brings out the rage. I swear I nearly nailed somebody's feet to the floor in Funny Girl couple of months ago.

ScarlettFreestone · 04/05/2017 14:24

My point about driving Hattie was in relation to Edward's concentration concerns. I'm sure you and Edward are both excellent drivers.

seoulsurvivor · 04/05/2017 14:24

scarlett

Really? Someone who can't concentrate with a loud repetitive noise in the background is a bad driver?

Now I've heard it all.

HumphreyCobblers · 04/05/2017 14:25

YANBU OP

Clapping along with things makes me cringe.

loveka · 04/05/2017 14:27

Yes I agree! Really pisses me off. Especially during Strictly. Dont clap, we can't hear the bloody music!

I went to a Mumford & Sons concert where the lead singer had a strop when some fans started clapping along during the band's acoustic bit. He looked absolutely horrified, shushed em in no uncertain terms and started the song again. You'd have loved it!

TheExuberant1 · 04/05/2017 14:30

Sometimes I clap and sometimes I don't....I don't lose sleep at night over it.

limitedperiodonly · 04/05/2017 14:31

Strictly is one of those shows where the audience is told to do that as well as whooping. Not everyone wants to do this. If you look carefully at the audience shots you can usually spot at least one person with their arms folded and a cats bum expression.

seoul I'm not really sure I'd characterise children clapping as "loud, repetitive noises" to be honest...

However I'm going to bow out of the thread now. I have somewhere to be in RL and cheerily leave you all to your silent, completely immobile music appreciation. Grin

Thank you Hattie this wonderful thread has really made me smile!

rightsofwomen · 04/05/2017 14:38

Multivac Grin that tickled me.

Plipplops · 04/05/2017 14:39

I HATE clapping along. Always sounds really contrived and shite, I just feel mega awkward and horrible. There have been about 2 exceptions to this in my entire life where I've loved whatever it was so much and was totally in it, but the other million times, no.

limitedperiodonly · 04/05/2017 14:43

Sometimes they tell people what to wear. I was in one studio audience where we all had to wear black polo necks. Round necks would be allowed but V-necks were borderline. Any other colour would be immediate dismissal.

Before the recording we all had to practice clapping. They didn't want unified clapping. They wanted off beat clapping so it looked spontaneous. It's quite tricky to get right but when we had, we were filmed for an extended clapping sequence. Bits of it were edited in afterwards to make it look like we loved the presenter or guests.

It took about three hours for a 30 minute programme and we looked like a convention of mindless cat burglars.

WorraLiberty · 04/05/2017 14:48

Clapping in general doesn't bother me.

But I find "Give yourselves a round of applause" cringeworthy and patronising.

And also clapping someone because they've just said they're 85 years old or something.

That's a bit like the audience are congratulating them for being alive Confused Grin

SnickersWasAHorse · 04/05/2017 14:51

I hear you OP.

Clapping at the end of a performance or whatever, fine.

I cannot abide a clap-a-long sodding audience. Passable if they are watching something like acrobats for example but when it's a band on just why? I want to hear the music not Sheila from Stoke clapping just behind the beat.

Bambambini · 04/05/2017 14:54

Jazz hands! Some folk and places now have a jazz hands/no clapping policy - maybe it will catch on.

RiseandGrind · 04/05/2017 14:58

Agreed OP. Always strikes me as incredibly infantile. Grin

Lottapianos · 04/05/2017 15:31

'You just described me. Enforced jollity, drinking games and flag waving give me the creeps'

I have found my people Grin Ditto sing-a-longs and impromptu 'jamming' sessions in pubs and at parties. Shameless showing off and total cringe. What is wrong with having a drink and a chat like adults? I don't need 'entertainment' while I do it

Oh lord Worra, the clapping for old people on the telly. Mortifying.

user3459859083590890 · 04/05/2017 15:49

Grin 40 seconds in - David Brent takes over a training session.

Maudlinmaud · 04/05/2017 15:57

I enjoyed that immensely user. Probably too much Grin
