My mum and her husband and terrible with money. They just don't seem to have a clue about anything from eBay fiascos (buying stuff and then cancelling payments as she thought they were hacking into her bank!) typing £100 delivery charge instead of £10 and then just "leaving it" as it was too much hassle to sort out despite the fact that they were skint etc ... they sold the house that they owned and believed cowboy agencies when they told them it was only worth £25k - they moved into a rented house and then blew the £25k on a caravan which they then were ripped off with and ended up selling for around £8k ... with that £8 they bought a smaller caravan!!!
She didn't work and he was nearing retirement but they never thought to save anything or sort out a pension or even look into what they'd live on once he retired - so he retired and they realised they couldn't even afford the rent on their flat - cue more tears and stress - they've now moved into a smaller flat yet continue to pay ground rent for the caravan which they very rarely use -
I had a message from a relative earlier suggesting that I might need to sort their finances out as they get older as they don't even know what is going in and out of their bank. They signed up to a funeral scheme where you pay monthly for your own funeral before you die (fucked up priorities saving for death when you can barely afford to live!!) and they thought they had been paying this for months. All of a sudden they get a letter about missed payments - more tears, my mum making out that they've ripped her off - only to now discover that they have never made a payment to this scheme (despite the contract!) and the monthly outgoing they thought was for that turned out to be something to do with the caravan!!!
How can people be so clueless?? I find it so frustrating and from a selfish point of view, I'm dreading finding out what else they've fucked up when the responsibility becomes mine!
AIBU??!! Will all this shit become my problem at some point? The only other kid they have is as bad as them and equally clueless (moaning that she can't afford to eat whilst buying teddy bears and games from America!)
