To loathe FaceTime (rant...sorry)

I'm recovering from some fairly minor but painful surgery (yesterday) which requires strong painkillers and antibiotics. Both children are also at home ill. My MIL Facetimes. I'm in bed trying not to vomit due to metronidazole and the children (9 and 6) come in 3 times saying Granny wants to speak to me.

I find FaceTime intrusive at the best of times but I don't want a camera shoved in my Face when I'm ill.

To be fair to MIL, she doesn't know I've had surgery. This is mainly due to the fact I don't want my private medical issues to be transmitted throughout the family (she has previous form for this). Saying that, surely you would take the hint when you realise someone is in bed and not continue to ask to speak to them!

I'm probably being unreasonable having had a GA and being on strong painkillers, but what's wrong with using a phone? Why do people need to see me too?

Just say no. Not feeling well.

blue2014 · 03/05/2017 17:30

I've always hated it too, often because I'm doing other things when phone calls get too boring!

WhooooAmI24601 · 03/05/2017 17:33

FaceTime is the work of the very devil.

In the olden days when DH worked away he'd phone, say goodnight to the DCs and that would be that. Now he Facetimes them and we have the whole bloody theatrics of showing him what they're wearing, what they've had for tea, inspecting the insides of their nostrils up the camera, getting all the animals to wave their paws down the camera at Daddy as the animals try to savage the children, showing daddy the endless tat they've created in school, showing daddy what the weather is like, let alone the fact that the FaceTime camera appears to make me look like some sort of scrotum-faced harridan.

It should be banned immediately. Flowers op. Refuse all Facetimes til you're well enough to handle them, hope your recovery goes well.

Satsumabuma · 03/05/2017 17:39

Yes, I should just say I'm ill but then I will have to explain why. On the phone I can get away with some deception. Glad to hear I'm not the only on who hates FaceTime. All my friends and family love it!

Can't you just not accept the call? Or have I missed something?

pinkyredrose · 03/05/2017 17:43

Don't answer?

Trb17 · 03/05/2017 17:43

Switch FaceTime off. Problem solved. If anyone asks say it's glitchy on your phone so you've switched it off and phoning you is easier. Inform children that on pain of death do they pass you a FaceTime call on their devices.

Lochan · 03/05/2017 17:45

Decline the call. Teach your children to decline the call.

Meekonsandwich · 03/05/2017 17:49

Lol as a Deaf person I can say face time is a god send. Maybe not for able people but without it I wouldn't be able to speak with my friends who struggle with English.

You don't have to use it. Keep declining the calls and when you feel like it call back normally.

WeAreEternal · 03/05/2017 17:50

SIL does not call she will only FaceTime. It drives me batty.

Sometimes when she calls my front camera just doesn't seem to work and all we get is blackness and audio, I have no idea why, maybe my phone is broken... or maybe I just have my finger over the lense. Wink

BubbleBed · 03/05/2017 17:51

I haven't had an iPhone for a while, but isn't there a setting where you deactivate facetime? Do that on the iPads and iPhones and sorted.

Satsumabuma · 03/05/2017 17:54

The children answered. I will defiantly look at deactivating it. Thanks for the tip!

Same Grin

BIL calls DH. They rarely have much to say to each other beyond, "How's the weather?" Cue FT to try and make it all more interesting. Lots of walking about showing our houses to each other. Me frantically trying to remember if my knickers are still hung up to dry somewhere in the house. Inane remarks. Both yelling so that their voices are picked up on the microphones.

So over it Angry.

lilydaisyrose · 03/05/2017 18:00

I don't use Facetime or Skype - would hate it. DH tried to videocall me on WhatsApp the other day and I panicked & declined. No thanks!

Satsumabuma · 03/05/2017 18:00

Yes, I look horrendous on the camera too (even more so right now). Just hideous!

I don't mind talking, but FaceTime is a bit Confused that's just my view.

You could always say you've had surgery but are trying to keep it private.

Hope you all get better soon.

TheGoodWife16 · 03/05/2017 18:01

I got so fed up with the intrusive FaceTime calls from various family members that I uninstalled the app. Best thing I ever did. Happy to text, speak on the phone if I absolutely have to, but I do not want to witness my 43 year old complexion trying to minimise the amount of chins on show.

SignoraStronza · 03/05/2017 18:01

That's one of the many reasons why I won't have an i-thing. Or Skype. SIL does it constantly when she's over. Facetiming her family abroad, smack bang in the middle of my poor MIL's kitchen. I stay well put of the way of all the incessant jabbering. Hate it, so intrusive.

MongerTruffle · 03/05/2017 18:03

Switch it to audio-only.

Ferrisday · 03/05/2017 18:03

I hate it too
Only because it reminds me how ugly I am

SparklyFairyDust · 03/05/2017 18:04

True that's what I do or block the camera, or just point the camera at the wall.

user1493759849 · 03/05/2017 18:06

Scrotum faced harridan PMSL! Grin

Who said that???????!!!!!!

PMSL!

I am not fond of myself on 'live camera' either. They are never flattering. Same as a photo booth.
