I'm 26 and having my first one booked next week. I'm actually gutted about it as I've never needed a filling until now. My dp is 29 and has about 5. Also aibu to be so upset at needing one. Obviously I've lasted this long without needing any but I'm worried that my oral hygiene isn't good enough now!

41 and no fillings! I also don't drink any fizzy drinks (never have) or very much juice!

CheersMedea · 03/05/2017 15:48

Be Careful. Fillings are notorious for unnecessary work done by unscrupulous dentists (or ones where it's a borderline case where you don't need a filling).

I remember visiting a dentist for an opinion on some cosmetic work in an area I was temporarily living in. He told me I needed a filling and should book in asap.

I was Hmm. I went to my normal dentist who said I absolutely did not need a filling and if I was worried he could clean and put dental sealant on it.

I've since spoken to dentists who say this is a known "thing" amongst dentists. Because there is no real NHS work to speak of, it is not unknown to do unnecessary work (or work that could be avoided by less invasive methods) in order to make money.

If you think you don't need a filling, get a second opinion from a recommended dentist or one you trust.

  1. 2 years after having a transplant and being on and off massive doses of steroids in that time.

Prior to that I never needed one, but since then (3 years) I've had another 3, so I have 4 total (2 are tiny, all are white fillings because I want to pretend I still have great teeth )

dementedpixie · 03/05/2017 16:16

As a child in primary school and have them in several of my molars. One of my molars is more filling than tooth (I blame the bands that I had round my teeth when I had braces for my crappy molars). Dd is 13 and never had any. Ds is 10 and had 2 in baby teeth but none now as the teeth fell out (he had bad enamel on his back teeth so will be more prone to getting cavities in them)

BlueChairs · 03/05/2017 16:39

No fillings but just recently chipped all three of my front teeth!! I'm so annoyed and angry and they look so ugly now :(

superbean · 03/05/2017 16:44

42

Also still waiting.

Though rather depressingly, last time I saw the dentist he rather implied that my teeth should "last me". Made me feel about 82.

Vagndidit · 03/05/2017 16:53

I was 6, and it was in the US where dental care is a bit, uh, overzealous.

WhooooAmI24601 · 03/05/2017 16:57

35 and never had one. I just have strong enamel; even the Dentist admits it's down to luck and regular brushing.

DS1 is 11 and hasn't ever had one. Like me he has strong enamel and brushes religiously. He takes all forms of hygiene very seriously though.

DS2 is 6 and has had 2 white ones at the back. Totally down to the fact that he doesn't brush properly unless DH and I stand over him issuing commands. He's a filthy scrote and has to be forced into brushing his teeth twice a day; he also has to be physically wrestled into the bath and hates everything to do with hygiene.

WhooooAmI24601 · 03/05/2017 16:59

Also DS1 never grinds his teeth and DS2 grinds them constantly at night. Which might be why he has the two fillings.

Yoghurty · 03/05/2017 17:12

Oh dear, so many of you with none Sad

Had my first in my teens- a root canal. I've had 3 more root canals and 3 regular fillings- and I'm 36.

It's hereditary for me, both my parents have had dozens of fillings and extractions between them. Both grannies had false teeth by their 60's too.

CassandraAusten · 03/05/2017 17:15

None here - I'm 42. I drink a can of fizzy drink every day - agree it's mainly luck / genes.

Mandraki · 03/05/2017 17:25

16 and then one last year at 26.

Daydream007 · 03/05/2017 18:04

I've never had one and I'm 42. My mum was fairly strict with sugary treats and brushing my teeth. I thank my mum regularly for policing my dental routine!

Bantanddec · 03/05/2017 18:09

I have 4 I had my first at about 11 my last at 17

Lostwithinthehills · 03/05/2017 18:13

I'm over 40 and I don't have any fillings. I would put it down to luck.

Meekonsandwich · 03/05/2017 19:39

That's good! I had my first at 17, my brother had 5 by 15!

I knew a girl at school who had a root canal at 14! She had so many fillings!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/05/2017 19:40
  1. Not yet. I still have two milk teeth as well Grin
LTBiscuit · 03/05/2017 19:48

Coughandsplutter · 03/05/2017 19:54

37 and no fillings to date. Hope I've not jinxed myself!

Louiselouie0890 · 03/05/2017 19:56

25 I had 6 filling and kne tooth extraction all due to bloody pregnancy my teeth were perfect before

user1471545174 · 03/05/2017 19:56

Started at 5 and had whole mouth pointlessly filled with metal by NHS shysters. It was basically child abuse.

NormaSmuff · 03/05/2017 19:57

15 i think, i blame it on having my tonsils out.
14 years later it was changed to a root canal
and 20 years after that changed to having the tooth out!

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 03/05/2017 19:57

25 and still don't have any too scared to go back to the dentist so I may need one who knows

My brother had his first at about 10 years old I think and my sister had her first at 13.

turbohamster · 03/05/2017 20:08

Late teens I think, I don't really recall it as obviously seemed perfectly normal to me, both my parents have rubbish teeth. It's only fairly recently that I've realised that plenty of people have none even at 30+

I think whilst there is plenty you can do to help yourself, some of it is just luck of the draw. Pretty much most health related things are like this so I don't think teeth are any different.
