Regardless of his own .....shortcomings, it would call into question the very legitimacy of his election. Darn tooting they're going to distract and deflect.

#Trump, a man whose name covers his hotels, courses & casinos, doesn't want his name on health care. Wonder why? #trumpcare #AHCA #obamacare pic.twitter.com/ziU3z4npI4

I sense the administration trying to play hardball. They don't realise, though, that their house is built on sand.

Orlantina · 06/05/2017 22:58

What happens in the USA if you have a health condition and are uninsured - because you either can't afford the premiums or just can't get insurance?

(I fear I know the answer)

cozietoesie · 06/05/2017 22:58

He hates, hates, hates to have it called Trumpcare.

In France, Marine Le Pen's support dwindles further in final polls in her race against Emmanuel Macron bit.ly/2pRC4n3

It's tomorrow, isn't it? God I hope LePen does not win!!!

cozietoesie · 06/05/2017 23:00

I suspect, Orlan, that you best hope for a generous and well funded friend or family member.

GingerIvy · 06/05/2017 23:02

Orlantina those that make enough money that they cannot get free medical assistance but don't make enough money to pay for medical insurance (or either have some cheap shitty insurance through work that is worthless) will end up paying exorbitant medical bills if they have to have treatment. Most will delay seeking medical attention until the problem is emergent, which drives up the cost exponentially. If they are emergent, they will be seen at ER (A&E) but they will be billed - and it will be astronomical.

cozietoesie · 06/05/2017 23:02

The amounts of money being spent there - and to be spent there - are just staggering.

Orlantina · 06/05/2017 23:04

A bit of a Google

kff.org/uninsured/fact-sheet/key-facts-about-the-uninsured-population/

Wow...some shocking facts about the uninsured, medical debt etc.

I can't believe that 21st c USA is like that. Mind you, I do wonder how health care is in other countries.

But hey, why look after your population and keep them well when you can spend a fortune on the military?

We live on a strange planet.

Orlantina · 06/05/2017 23:06

What do Americans make of the NHS?

cozietoesie · 06/05/2017 23:12

Obama himself was originally for a single-payer healthcare system if I recall. And many/most democrats would also support that. The issue has long been not that The ACA was the best system but that Trumpcare is appalling.

GingerIvy · 06/05/2017 23:16

Orlatina I'm an American living in the UK. I spent a few years working in medical offices in the states when I was much younger, and one of my responsibilities in one office was billing and chasing up insurance payments. My child also had a serious health concern while I lived there. I had to make sure (even though I had good health insurance through my work) to keep $100 on hand at all times in case I had to take my child into urgent care or ER - to cover copays for the treatment and any meds. A few times when money was short, I had to dip into that $100, and I prayed that my child wouldn't need to be seen for medical treatment. I guess I would have had to borrow money from my parents if that happened.

I love the NHS. Love love love it! I can take my children in to be seen without worrying how much cash I have and how the care will impact my budget that week. I didn't have to stress about how much "my share" of the bill would be after surgery or after childbirth or pay ahead on the debt .

No worrying about changing doctors and hospitals if you switch jobs and go from one medical insurance plan to another. You're not tied to your job because you can't afford to lose the medical insurance.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 06/05/2017 23:17

I met some American relatives of a friend at a house party 18 months or so ago. They had the impression it was awful because they'd heard a lot about the waiting lists for e.g. Hip operations. We did explain that the lists are longer than they ought to be because the NHS is good at acute care &, within the resources available, those most in need get to jump the queue. Several members of my family (me included) have benefitted from (in some cases highly expensive) high quality care that prolonged lives far, far beyond expectations. And we didn't have to sell our homes or bankrupt ourselves to get treatment.
