to think couples wearing matching outfits is a bit odd

Just that really, having driven through town today and been struck by the number of mainly middle-aged couples wearing matching jackets and in some cases matching trousers too. DH has the fashion sense of a colour-blind mosquito, hates clothes shopping and doesn't give a fuck what he looks like, but even he resorts to stealing old clothes from his brother and BIL rather than asking me to pick up two of whatever I'm buying for myself.

Dh and I had matching pink shirts many moons ago. Mine was a fitted blouse btw and we had them made up. Just for fun. I think it was cute. But I wouldn't wear men's clothes to match him etc.

ginswinger · 01/05/2017 18:40

In South Korea, it's the norm for honeymoon couples to dress in matching outfits. It amused me no end when I was there

It's awful, especially as it mainly seems to be rainmacs, which are fashion crimes in themselves

Piffpaffpoff · 01/05/2017 18:42

I'm so thrilled other people remember Howard and Hilda. DH and I have the same car (long story, but I had mine first and it worked so well size-wise for a family hobby that has a lot of equipment that he went and got one too!) and I made a joke to a few folk about calling us Howard and Hilda and no-one knew what I meant Sad.

gluteustothemaximus · 01/05/2017 18:44

We did it by mistake once. I had an old jumper of DH's that had mysteriously shrunk in the wash and he'd bought another one the same.

When we got to where we were going, took off our coats, and da daaaah! Matching outfits. Found it 😂.

We did see an entire family wearing buzz light year hoodies at legoland. I try not to judge but DH and I did exchange the look Hmm

Cantusethatname · 01/05/2017 18:45

Ooh I'd be in a raggedly black jumper and enormous dirty black jeans then. I don't think so.

Happyhippy45 · 01/05/2017 18:45

Me and DH have been together for about 25 years. Over the years I've frequently worn cotton checkered shirts with jeans, a fleece and trainers/hiking boots.
He's slowly starting to have a very similar wardrobe as me....through choice. Seems it's a natural progression. We only have one identical shirt and try not to wear it at the same time.
He used to slag off (in fun) my look as "lesbian lumberjack look."
We've both added crocs into the repertoire. No we don't care.
I think it's kind of sweet now. When I was younger I thought it was a bit cringey.

Judydreamsofhorses · 01/05/2017 18:49

Both DP and I have big green parkas - his is a proper North Face one, mine is Whistles - and in bad weather we probably look a bit daft wearing them together. But, tbh, if it's cold and wet enough for the parka, I don't much care.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 01/05/2017 18:52

I discovered a little while ago that I dress like my Dad when we met up in town wearing identical outfits, so you know, there are worse things than matching couples outfits.

GrandDesespoir · 01/05/2017 18:53

I think it looks pretty ridiculous, tbh. Up there with socks and sandals.

My parents are in their 70s and without in any way being slaves to fashion both manage to look reasonably stylish (and different from each other) when they go out.

AuntieStella · 01/05/2017 18:54

I remember Howard and Hilda (especially the knitwear) and was delighted to see the pic

MaQueen · 01/05/2017 18:57

I buy the vast majority of DH's clothes because he hates clothes shopping, is utterly uninterested in clothes, and would happily wear the same tatty old sweatshirt day in/day out.

However, he is twice my size with an 18.5" collar, so it's virtually impossible for us to wear similar clothes.

When I see couples both in their Regatta fleeces and Skechers I do think they look very meh and not aesthetically pleasing. It's like they have just given up.

But some people aren't bothered about being aesthetically pleasing. Which is fair enough but I will never, ever be one of them

Today we saw a couple in royal blue Ed Hardy velour track suits at the local shopping centre. They were late 20s. Me and DH were 😳

Ana amazing sight

FelixtheMouse · 01/05/2017 19:38

We need a Howard & Hilda fan club.

HoneyDragon · 01/05/2017 23:51

I think it's cute I like it that a friend of mines husband wears a shirt that coordinates with her dress at weddings and such.

I don't dress like Dh because I the man lives exclusively in blue check shirts and jeans and I like variety in my live.

However

I often end up wearing the same as by son and am reprimanded and sent upstairs to change before leaving the house with him Blush

Life

oneleggedfatbird · 02/05/2017 07:15

My brother and his wife do it. We call them Howard and Hilda 😀

LedaP · 02/05/2017 07:20

Me and dh have done this a couple of times. Unintentionally. We work together so one always get changed. Usually me because he doesnt care.

Last week 4 of us at work all turned up in blue and white striped shirts. Not including dh. He had a black shirt on. We looked like a right set of knobbers sat together in a meeting.

TheNaze73 · 02/05/2017 07:23

Each to their own & all that but, it does make me laugh.

The matching trousers & sweater look, as modelled by Ken Masters in Howard's Way is my particular favourite

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 02/05/2017 10:38

I don't like DT's dressed alike either (I have, and don't unless it's one item - t-shirt or sometimes the same style but different colour).
We went out yesterday as a family and I asked the boys to find a top to got with jeans. They both came down with similar yellow polo tops. Bugger me if DH didn't pick the same. I should've made him change top but it was amusing. Bit like a job lot. (shame I don't own one)

SheSaidHeSaid · 02/05/2017 10:43

By accident my DH and I have dressed the same, it hasn't been intentional. I think when you spend a lot of time together you pick up each others influences and it can happen. We don't set out to dress identically.

ThouShallNotPass · 02/05/2017 10:49

Hubby and I love hoodies. The number of times we've walked all the way to school with the kids without realising we picked up the same colour hoodie that day is crazy. We look like right sad acts!

So sometimes matching couples is accidental. 😂Blush

MadameSzyszkoBohush · 02/05/2017 10:52

I once worked with a woman who wore her husband's shoes to work one day and didn't realise until halfway through the day. He had put hers on...

RhiWrites · 02/05/2017 10:56

Those pictures of honeymooning couples are sweet.

I'm less sure about the couple who dress the same every day. I keep thinking how sad it will be for them when one dies.
