IS NOT STERILE!!

^^ This has been a public service announcement on behalf of all those, like myself, who are fed up with seeing/hearing myths like this presented as facts (often in a very smug manner) all over the place. I have no idea how this particular one came to be, but it is incredibly pervasive.

What are your "fgs NO" facts that you NEED to clear up?

When people say, having developed cold symptoms an hour after seeing you if you have a cold, 'you gave me your cold'

AlmostAJillSandwich · 28/04/2017 17:28

I forgot to put in my last post, the reason you're supposed to do urine samples mid flow and not hold the pot there before you start peeing is because bacteria present on your skin (especially fecal bacteria which cross contamination causes a lot of bacterial UTI) does multiply on the skin and can be present in the urethra (women with shorter urethras are more prone to bacterial UTI as it's easier for the bacteria to get to the bladder).
By starting your wee first your urine flushes out this surface bacteria and by mid flow the bacteria present in the urine is what is in your actual bladder.

I'm not a doctor, but i suffer recurrent UTI and have spent countless hours of my life researching bladders due to having OCD about toilet use and germs.

kitbabingley · 28/04/2017 17:29

Ohyesiam because it isn't. See here for example.

Gallavich people usually say you can clean a wound by peeing on it if you're somewhere without access to clean water. I imagine that your own urine would be preferable to muddy stream water but it's not quite the same as being sterile.

I've thought of another one that really annoys me and pops up a lot, "If a shop displays something at the wrong price they HAVE to sell it to you at that price." No they don't. Some might do, in the name of good customer service (or getting a pain in the arse customer to finally bugger off) but they don't have to at all. This gives the legal position on it.

I take issue with 'too cold to snow' on the basis of lack of cloud. Lack of cloud means it won't snow and that it will also be cold. It doesn't make it too cold to snow, i.e. That's not the cause and effect there. The are two separate outcomes of the same thing.

My sister used the 'urine is sterile' argument for why she doesn't bother to close the lid when she flushes the toilet. I don't know if it is or not, but one thing for sure is that the toilet bowl certainly isn't sterile Shock

GrandDesespoir · 28/04/2017 17:44

Everything happens for a reason.

No it fucking doesn't. Angry

Another teacher wondering how structure within an essay made it into AIBU. Ginfor long weekend!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 28/04/2017 17:51

That you CAN wash your hair, when you have your period 😤

fairgame84 · 28/04/2017 17:55

Too cold to snow is a myth.

That dogs have clean tongues. Our dog licks her arse for 8 hours a day.
Her tongue is not clean!!!

mooncuppy · 28/04/2017 17:57

That you CAN wash your hair, when you have your period

You're not allowed to wash your hair when on your period? Why?

OneTimeintheSunshine · 28/04/2017 17:59

That you CAN wash your hair, when you have your period

Huh? But you can... Or I'm a medical marvel.

troodiedoo · 28/04/2017 18:03

That the average person eats seven spiders in their sleep in a lifetime. Really! You would have to be in a very deep sleep to not notice an arachnid in your mouth. To deep to chew and swallow I expect.

OneTimeintheSunshine · 28/04/2017 18:04

Mil and Bil, antibiotics do not cure a cold. You do not need to take them every time you have a sniffle and your doctor really should stop dishing them out.

Friend, paracetamol doesn't cure a cold and it isn't a preventative measure against one.

Same friend, taking antihistamines every time you have an allergic reaction will not make your body build up a tolerance to the antihistamines. (I don't think.... Ready to be corrected by anyone in the know if I'm wrong on this one.)

Cutting your hair does not make it grow back thicker. The chopped ends do not communicate with the roots and tell them to grow more or whatever people think they do.

Firesuit · 28/04/2017 18:07

I don't know what "a chill" is, if it's not the same thing as a cold. I hope someone will enlighten me.

I would assume somone saying "you'll catch cold" is saying "you'll catch a cold" lazily, by leaving a word out. If they mean something different, I'd be interested to know what that is.

(No-one I know in real life says either, I assume they are regional or class-specific British things.)

OneTimeintheSunshine · 28/04/2017 18:08

I don't know what a chill is either. Is it feeling cold?

On that note, I also don't know what "it repeats on me" means in the context of eating certain foods.

ilovesooty · 28/04/2017 18:09

Parents did not have to find more days of childcare when teacher INSET days were introduced. They were taken from teacher holidays in the first place and pupils are in school the same number of days as they have always been.

PoorYorick · 28/04/2017 18:09

Cutting your hair does not make it grow back thicker.

Of course not. Though blunt ends and more bounce due to less weight and more shape will probably make it look thicker and much healthier.

Silvercatowner · 28/04/2017 18:10

Wearing a crop top will give you 'kidneys'. (This was a gem from my long departed gran).

Marmalade85 · 28/04/2017 18:15

That pee is an acceptable alternative to wee. Hate it.

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/04/2017 18:15

You can't smell food to see if it's OK to eat. Spoilage bacteria make food smell, you probably don't want to eat it because it will taste awful, but it won't make you ill.
Pathogens, which cause illness, do not make food smell. You can't sniff out Salmonella, Hepatitis A, Campylobactor etc. They don't have a taste either.

Grittyshunts · 28/04/2017 18:20

I too thought this was a Point Evidence Explain thread! Grin

kitbabingley · 28/04/2017 18:20

Marmalade “acceptable" is a matter of opinion, not fact. I apologise wholeheartedly for offending you with my choice of words, but it doesn't negate the issue.
