AIBU to want to punch the twat in the face that's playing bagpipes at the highschool not far from where I live? Arghh the sound is travelling far! My nearly five month old baby is now awake . . . Sad

Actually, I should qualify that. My son's school has a full pipe band, they're phenomenally talented and sound amazing. I can imagine that a piper of less than average talent is a different matter.

MrsJayy · 28/04/2017 15:31

Ooo ive seen the Red hot chilli pipers live the are indeed HOT

MrsJayy · 28/04/2017 15:32

Go see them brillo they are brilliant and as i mentioned hot Grin

clown503 · 28/04/2017 15:41

Have to agree with you MrsJayy Grin

I love the bagpipes! I live in Scotland though and hear the local high school kids practicing regularly. Doesn't bother me

floraeasy · 28/04/2017 15:50

There is a definition of a true Scottish gentleman:
One who can play the bagpipes, but doesn't!

Love that Grin

AwaywiththePixies27 · 28/04/2017 16:47

Oh I don't mind bagpipes. My friend who died af Christmas used to love hearing them, as did I. It makes me smile when I hear them.

Now admittedly if it was 5am in the morning you WNBU. Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/04/2017 19:35

I love them. Better than the sound of English people whining Grin

But not when there's a sleeping baby!

TheNaze73 · 28/04/2017 20:03

YANBU. They are hideous

user1471426611 · 28/04/2017 20:28

I love bagpipes and have played them since I was 15! I played other instruments to a high standard but wanted to play something completely different. I've played in different bands and toured in France, Begium and Sicily. Fabulous instrument but only if they are played well. If you like Red Hot Chilli Pipers listen to Victoria Police live in Ireland, the last few tracks are amazing!

chitofftheshovel · 28/04/2017 20:37

Bagpipes are ok. From a distance. A large distance with plenty of hills to absorb the sound.

I quite like them if they're well played.
There used to be a piper who played to the queues in the bus station in my old town and people would pay him not to play until their bus came Grin

My (Irish) dad used to say that the bagpipes were a joke from the Irish to the Scots - and the Scots didn't get it Smile

mawbroon · 28/04/2017 23:23

I love them when played well, but there are some dreadful pipers out and about busking. If that's the only time you hear them then I can see why you might think them awful.

Twofurrycats · 28/04/2017 23:25

Badly played bagpipes are hell on earth. Played well I like them. My ex was best man at a Scottish wedding in a castle where we shoved the piper on the roof to play as the bride came up the drive - it was lovely. My most bizarre encounter with bagpipes was in Florence in the early hours of the morning. One guy on his own, no tourists about or anyone really, stood by the duomo playing. No idea why and can't imagine it was popular with the immediate residents!

Time to trot out one of my favourite quotations. Brendan Behan said "the only good thing about the bagpipes is that they don't smell as well"

LadyLoveYourWhat · 29/04/2017 01:07

English samba bands are worse.

ExplodedCloud · 29/04/2017 01:13

My dad's friend was a piper. On the odd occasion he wasn't performing on NYE he played in the street which was nice. One year though he brought the pipes into our house and played full tilt in our living room. Oh good grief it was loud!

AgentProvocateur · 29/04/2017 01:22

I love the sound of bagpipes. I just have to hear the opening chords of Highland Cathedral and I well up (and I'm known for my unsentimentality!)

Giggorata · 29/04/2017 08:00

I love them. Maybe not constantly....
I see your Red Hot Chilli Peppers and I'll raise you Corvus Corax....

mawbroon · 29/04/2017 16:44

Meh, Corvus Corax is not really for me.

Give me a 2/4 march any day Grin Wink
