HELP! Are there any vets around (warning picture of injury included)

My dog was out in the garden and there was a sudden yelping, he's cut himself around his dew claw. The bleeding has stopped, but I think he's in shock. He's eaten since it happened but is very shaky and clingy. We have some Leucillin (vetinary antiseptic spray) and have treated it with that. Does he need a vet? The cut isn't big enough to stitch but the claw is sticking out a bit of an angle, which may be just down to the swelling. I don't know if a vet will do anything and the vets won't be open until the morning anyway. Any advice would be very awesome.

Not a vet but one of my dogs recently split a claw, took him in to the vets & he had to be sedated so the vet could cut it right down as the nerve was exposed & could get infected. I would bandage it up for tonight & then ring the vets first thing.

I've looked quite closely at it. There's nothing stuck in it.

If in doubt, go to the vet. Nothing bad can come of taking them to the vet and the vet telling you it's nothing to worry about.

If you are anywhere near me I have some metacam here (dog anti-inflammatory and painkiller combined) along with an oral dosing syringe?

I always have some in, just in case.

Would help tide him over till morning.

If you have to ask, you have to take.

Vets usually won't give advice over the net as it's not ethical and without their history and full physical check up they could give the wrong advice.

I'm a vet. Yes, you should take him in the morning. Pain relief tonight if you have it. they may need to remove some of the broken claw.

My dog had a claw injury. Vet had to cut it right down & cauterise it due to the risk of infection. I'd cover it tonight so the dog can't lick it & contact vet first thing. Mine had to be sedated as it was so painful, it's the only time he has ever gone for me when I tried to look at it

As a Pp said, metacam (if you have some) and vet in the am.
I also have some if I'm close too!

Good point about sedation Hueandcry. Sedation is likely.

Don't give your dog breakfast before you call. (Well, unless he has some condition, such as diabetes, where that would be dengerous).Check with the vet when you make the appointment whether they have a protocol for fasting.

Phone your vet's out of hours provider for advice and follow their guidance. Please DO NOT give your dog any medication unless it has been prescribed for him or specifically told to by a vet you have seen or spoken to at Out of Hours. Also I wouldn't bandage it as you can do more harm. You can put a clean sock on it if you really think it needs covered to prevent it catching.
If you end up waiting until the morning for treatment, it might be worth starving him from now in case he needs sedated to treat that. He should be ok to get water overnight. Again, check with Out of Hours.

Pleasetellme. You do realise that metacam is just an NSAID? It's just a strightforward 1st line painkiller for dogs and cats very similar to ibuprofen. Nothing to get worked up about regarding specific prescription.

No need for that dog to suffer all night if it's avoidable.

There's no safe medication I can advise you to give I'm afraid. None of the human over-the-counter drugs are sufficiently safe. You can phone your out of hours provider if you feel he's in a lot of pain. However, I suspect it would mostly be sore when touched, so if he lies down to sleep, he may well settle.

Trying to cover it with anything could be painful, though if he's going outside, you might want to keep him somewhere he won't catch it on things.

Different NSAIDS are toxic to different species. Extrapolating isn't safe.

Paracetamol kills cats in tiny doses, for example. They don't have the enzyme in their liver to break it down. It's not so unsafe in dogs, but I wouldn't recommend it except in extreme circumstances and it's easy to get the calculation wrong as the dose is dependent upon weight.

Yes, Pentapus, I do know. I would not to give any prescription medication without checking with a vet who has responsibility for the animal concerned.

LostSight he's on my knee, under a blanket but not asleep. He's breathing is very quick though.

Restless, please call the Out of Hours vet if you're worried about him. Your own vet's answering machine should have a message with their number on it.
