To take dd to dr

Dd age 5.6 is very tall - approx 126cm. DH is tall 6ft 4cm. I'm a little above average height 5ft 6. I want to take her to the dr but DH think I'm crazy, he thinks I will influence her feelings from being proud she is tall to feeling it is not normal. I think I do mainly agree with DH but the comments from others and a little niggle make me want to see the GP to see if a referral is necessary. She had her reception meausring and nothing was said but I would hate for something to be wrong and there is something I could have done but in reality she is likely to just be a very tall woman.

Eh? You want to take a child to the doctors because she's tall? That's insane. What do you want them to do about it, squash her?

Unless she has some other signs of a problem I don't think I would no. her dad is tall, she has tall genetics. My niece has always been tall for her age and is now 5ft10 at 14. so, whilst tall, she's not abnormally so, and has no issues because of it.

The dr would laugh at you - what's the problem?!
What on earth would a referral do?! (Who would you be referred to - a heightician?!)

This thread is bizarre. Since when was 5'6 considered tall? Why would you take her to the dr? What's wrong with being tall? I was 5'9 by the time I was 14 and proud of it

If you have a series of concerns then yes. But a GP won't make her less tall!

Thank you - I just wanted reassurance that I am infact nuts. I don't want the GP to squash her so I won't go

O/T Why do people mix measurements? if you are 5'6" and your husband is 6'4" WHY in Gods name would you say your child is 126cm ?? Just why?

It's 4'2" which is the upper end of normal.

Do you have some of her heights from previous years and her red book? Plot them on the chart in the back. If she is rapidly moving up through the centiles then it could be worth taking her - there are various rare diseases to do with growth hormone etc. But if, as is likely, she was on say the 91st centile as a toddler and she still is, then she's just tall.

The dr won't laugh at you. There are growth hormone anomalies that can cause children to grow too tall. DS1 had to be tested when he was a toddler because he was very, very tall for his age. As it turns out, he's fine and his peers are now at aged 9 starting to catch up with him. If it would put your mind at rest, take her.

my oldest was 128cm at that age so pretty similar. It is off the normal range in the red book but not considered at all abnormal if you are above av and DH is 6'4". My daughter is now 6'2" at 14 and seems to have stopped. We are both tgall and so it was to be expected for all our 3 kids and I would have worried more had they not been tall!

leigh the OP said she was slightly above average at 5ft6in. which she is. average for a woman in the UK is 5ft4in, i believe

And if she did have a growth hormone issue then there are very effective treatments to rebalance her hormones and help her achieve a more "normal" height - don't let people pooh-pooh you.

This sounds like my SIL who was always head and shoulders taller than her peers. She's 6ft 2" aged 26.... she's just really tall!

My DD2 was that height at that age. She's always stayed tall and now at 14 is 5'8''. Tall, but within the realm of normal. I'm 5'11''. My dad was 6'3'' but had rickets after WW2 and didn't have his full growth - if his legs had grown properly and in proportion to the rest of him, he'd have been 6'9''. So tall runs in our family as it runs in yours.

Has she always been off the charts for height?

If she hasn't then take her. She has a tall Dad and a slightly taller than average Mum so she might just be tall, but if you are concerned speak to someone. Perhaps phone the HV team for advice if yours is any good? Or ask the school if they are planning any height checks?

What's giving you the little niggle?

I agree with looking back over the Red Book if you've got heights in there. Has she suddenly shot up or has she always been tall?

DD has been really tall since a toddler and was head and shoulders above the children in her class in Y1, but now she's in Y3, the others are catching up with her (same kids). She's got a long body and we've always struggled buying tops for her! However both DH and I have longish bodies (short legs though!) and MIL's side of family are above average height.

I guess, you know if this is a new thing or if she's always been tall.
