Was I unreasonable to dob someone in?

NC as this might be quite outing.

I commute to work on the train. I get on at stop A and off at stop D, both of which have ticket barriers. I always buy a ticket when I travel.

Stops B and C don't have ticket barriers.

A man got on at Stop B. The inspector came around asking for anyone who got on at Stop B. The inspector was very visible and called out "Stop B passengers" loudly enough for everyone to hear. The man didn't have headphones in. Yet, the man didn't show his ticket.

So, as the inspector passed I pointed out the man and said he'd got on at Stop B. Inspector then went to check his ticket and what a surprise the man didn't have one.

The man called me an interfering bitch. Meh, yeah, that's pretty accurate but it fucks me off that people feel as though buying a ticket is optional. It's not. You're using a service, you need to pay for it.

So was I unreasonable to dob this guy in?

OP posts:

I don't like snitchy kids, but snitchy adults ..... My god OP didn't you have anything better to do.. He did it he did it! lol

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 12:21

Rebecca

You and the point are strangers.

Who provides their services? Who makes the products? The staff. Yet who gets much lower rates than those in charge? The staff.

Capitalism relies upon exploiting the working class.

Norland · 27/04/2017 12:23

You should've tried this :

Was I unreasonable to dob someone in?
RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 12:23

Theft also adversely impacts the working classes.

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 12:24

Rebecca exploitation is a much bigger problem.

Clandestino · 27/04/2017 12:24

I'd do the same and wouldn't give a fuck about the opinion of others. Those people rely on the fact that nobody would rat on them due to some strange solidarity which I find incomprehensible. They are laughing at the idiots who comply and pay the fare and are chancing their way through.

Lweji · 27/04/2017 12:25

I don't think the huge prices are fair

But then if many people don't pay, someone will have to.

Lweji · 27/04/2017 12:27

The main question is, what will you do tomorrow, OP if you meet the same man on the train?

Will you ask him for his ticket?

MovingtoParadise · 27/04/2017 12:27

There have been a couple of people who have very well paid jobs doing this. Including one guy who earned half a million quid a year excluding himself with 'I kept expecting to get caught and when I didn't after 5 years I just kept doing it'.

I would expect an architect to be able to afford to go to work.

jojo2916 · 27/04/2017 12:28

if you have the energy to watch and report others perhaps use it for something more serious, such as abuse etc, the fact you were naughty at school yourself makes it even worse you are such a busy body now,

AyeAmarok · 27/04/2017 12:28

Good for you.

PeaFaceMcgee · 27/04/2017 12:31

The guard tries to keep an eye on who gets on and where. Must be hard though. Sometimes they do a 'all tickets for inspection" announcement on my line, to flush naughties out.

Chances are he was just doing it because he could. There's no evidence of poverty from OP's posts. Someone in genuine need probably wouldn't have verbally abused her either.

How do you know he's an architect though?

SapphireStrange · 27/04/2017 12:31

I think the inspector was pretty unreasonable expecting people to be honest about where they got on

I think this, too. Blame the system not the users.

How do you know (or think) he's an architect?

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 27/04/2017 12:32

This "oh you don't know his circumstances" thing is just nonsense. How far does it go? Are you allowed to shoplift if you are desperate and everyone should turn a blind eye? It's the same thing, stealing.

Completely agree with this.

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2017 12:32

Well it's not something I would do. I am a great one for minding my own business when out and about and particularly on public transport because I don't want to get punched or stabbed etc

It's a bit like the self appointed supermarket parking police you get on here.

God you sound like such a chav op.

Genuine question which I know I'll get flamed for. Why do working class people seem to take real pride in hurting each other. You seem so proud of yourself op. The current government have done a great job with you guys.

Morphene · 27/04/2017 12:35

good for you op yanbu.

Pay for a ticket or don't go on the train.

I hope the guy got a penalty as well as just having to buy a ticket.

Of course it affects the OP if people on her line are routinely not paying the fare. It means that she is paying for them to use the service.

It was also up to the inspector to decide whether or not to act on her information, obviously he chose to do so (probably due to some crazy belief that people using the train should buy a ticket).

Whut?!

Louiselouie0890 · 27/04/2017 12:37

So is it because your honest and you pay to use a service or because you have to pay as you can't get away with it having the barriers?

HouseworkIsASin10 · 27/04/2017 12:37

YABU It's not your job to grass on people. The man takes the chance of getting caught by the train staff, not some jealous arse because you had to pay at your station.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 12:38

she's a chav Shock

You should be bloody ashamed of yourself foodtime that is really offensive.

SomethingBorrowed · 27/04/2017 12:38

YANBU OP
I would have loved to see it. Maybe it makes me mean. Or maybe I just like things to be fair, there are rules.

LilQueenie · 27/04/2017 12:40

depends what stop he was getting off at. He would have bought a ticket at the barrier anyway unless he got off at the stop before.
