AIBU?

Was I unreasonable to dob someone in?

NC as this might be quite outing.

I commute to work on the train. I get on at stop A and off at stop D, both of which have ticket barriers. I always buy a ticket when I travel.

Stops B and C don't have ticket barriers.

A man got on at Stop B. The inspector came around asking for anyone who got on at Stop B. The inspector was very visible and called out "Stop B passengers" loudly enough for everyone to hear. The man didn't have headphones in. Yet, the man didn't show his ticket.

So, as the inspector passed I pointed out the man and said he'd got on at Stop B. Inspector then went to check his ticket and what a surprise the man didn't have one.

The man called me an interfering bitch. Meh, yeah, that's pretty accurate but it fucks me off that people feel as though buying a ticket is optional. It's not. You're using a service, you need to pay for it.

So was I unreasonable to dob this guy in?

Who is this special man that he gets free train travel?

Mn doesn't get out of the playground sometimes! Well done.

nopunin10did he had every intention of being a freeloader otherwise he would've asked to have purchased a ticket rather than be shamed into buying one. If OP had said nothing then he wouldn't have paid

I guess strictly you did nothing wrong but it smacks of narrow minded pettiness.

Whenever faced with this type of incident I always remind myself that it was the people obeying all the laws that marched others into gas chambers and it was the law breakers (criminals) that were smuggling them out of the country.

I wonder which one you would have been?????

Christ alive - words fail me. How can you sit there and type that offensive nonsense with a straight face?

Although you may want to consider that evil flourishes when good men do nothing.

I'd turn a blind eye to shoplifting... if it was on public transport.

Honestly the rules are: eyes down and mind your own business.

I mean, where's the line drawn? "I saw my neighbour lugging a sack with an arm hanging out and driving off with it at 2am, but I don't want to be a tell-tale"?!

So you are comparing murder to fare dodging really?

You need to up your game OP.

For tomorrow you will need: a high viz jacket, a clip board and a railway issued pen. At each stop stand at the door, note who enters, a brief description of the person and if you can where they have sat. You can then perambulate with the ticket inspector and point them out. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Yup, you're gonna need a badge op.

Um, yes. The fare-dodger architect is definitely comparable with the people trying to free the victims of the holocaust. Absolutely. Bravo.

Hmm

YABU- how have you even got worked up about this? Just MYOB.

OP you sound like a very angry person and your responses sound like you would be one of those people slating people on benefits for scrounging off the state and spending your taxes.

@VulvicMineralWater
I think you were very brave: and my opinion is reinforced by the "snitch" attitude of so many who have responded.
Some years ago on a local train I witnessed a ticket inspection - we all showed our tickets and one woman made a big show of looking for her ticket in the bottom of her bag. The ticket inspector carried on inspecting other tickets and then came back to her - I clearly saw another passenger give the fare-dodger her own, already checked, ticket.
To my everlasting shame I did nothing - I still wish I'd had the courage to dob both of them in.
We need more people like the OP, not fewer.
I don't flash my headlights to warn oncoming cars of speedtraps, either, as I wouldn't like any of my family or friends to be the victims of an accident caused by a recklessly speeding driver.

No I wouldn't have reported the bloke at all . Some people (not lookng at anyone) have no sense of personal security . That bloke the OP dobbed in knows her face now and some people are not nice .

Would have kept my mouth shut, nothing to do with me and not like he had hurt anyone , physically or verbally.

Would you like a medal, OP?

I get your principle, but as someone who was the cause of massive Fire Brigade call out bills in the past then it rings rather hollow. You might have actually diverted resources away from a real emergency elsewhere, so it is nothing to be proud of or laugh about.

I don't condone fare dodging and have never done it. That said, I know someone who has, and who was caught, tried to ignore all of the warning letters they got and was eventually stung with a fine for thousands. Served them right.

When I am on a train I just want to keep my head down and read or mess about quietly with my phone. I really don't pay any attention at all to who got on or off at any given station. That would be boring.

I wouldn't have said anything, because I'd assume that he'd get caught at his exit destination and have to pay then, and wouldn't want to put myself at risk of some kind of reprisal tbh.

You do not know that she hadn't genuinely lost the ticket so get over yourself!

I once spoke to a ticket inspector who told me the trick is (when they call out the "anyone just got on at this stop" question) to watch other passengers whose eyes will invariably turn to the passenger who did just get on the train and didn't fess up.

So you were BU shopping him, you should just have stared hard and let the inspector do their job Grin

I wouldn't because I am a wuss. But I would want to, and I don't think the OP is wrong for doing it, certainly not even more wrong than the person who didn't get a ticket.

People drawing parallels with the holocaust and murder are just stupid, as well as offensive.
I happen to think the OP did the right thing - although I would have attempted to be more discreet.

Greyponcho He paid for a ticket. ifs buts and intentions don't make him a freeloader. If I plan to murder someone but 'my plans are thwarted/change my mind' doesn't make me a murderer.
