Smoking outside cafés?

Took my boys out to a local country park this morning. Decided we would have lunch while we were there so got ourselves settled at an outside table at the park café. We had our dog with us (as did many other families) so could not have gone inside.

Halfway through our meal, another family sat at the neighbouring table and both adults proceeded to light up cigarettes. So, we ended up with smoke wafting across us. Both boys stopped eating pretty much immediately, and started saying they felt sick. (Yes, they are probably hypersensitive but, it was pretty grim.) I gave up on trying to convince them to finish their lunch and we left the area, as did another family who hadn't finished their meals either.

There were no ashtrays on the tables, so the café clearly don't endorse smoking there.

AIBU to think this is a) Fucking inconsiderate behaviour and b) to be amazed that it is legal to smoke round an area where people are eating, even if it is outside.

The real problem is smoking. It is not ok for smokers to smoke next to pregnant women or children. Something needs to be done about it

Cattle prods?

Gowgirl · 24/04/2017 12:34

gamer only if we get prods to keep the passive aggressive non smokers inside Grin

PhyllisNights · 24/04/2017 12:34

What if there are no seats inside? There were no seats inside Costa a few weeks ago and I had to go outside. I didn't get to finish my panini and latte because people started lighting up next to me - and I have a bump, I'm clearly pregnant!

Fenella your entire debate with me was pointless. The children that die are the ones who aren't fortunate enough to be saved like I was as a child.
You tried to argue with me that dogs attacking children was a non issue, so what am I supposed to say 'oh You're right only 13 children die every year...moving on then'
I didn't bring up the subject of dogs and I'm against forcing people to passively smoke, but I thought I'd elaborate why dogs can be seen as offensive and dangerous in the same way that smoking can.

ilovechoc1987 · 24/04/2017 12:43

Phylis why didn't you say something to the smokers? All you had to do was say "excuse me would you mind putting that out and waiting till I'm gone, in pregnant..thank you"

Do women only say what they mean on MN or something?!

NewDOOFUSfor17 · 24/04/2017 12:46

Tbf katron my dog did appear as if he had been used as a bog brush Grin he is way more disgusting than I am, all that ball licking and dog wee infested grass eating and then he goes and licks people, which most people seem to love!!! I'd much rather someone smoking on a table 10ft from me in an open outdoor space where the smoke is more likely to disperse before it reaches me than a direct gross lick!

PhyllisNights · 24/04/2017 12:46

I just got up, huffed and puffed a bit, then walked towards the car.

I was by myself. My husband wasn't with me. I wasn't about to get into an argument with strangers.

Gowgirl · 24/04/2017 12:49

As opposed to randoms on the internetHmm

gamerchick · 24/04/2017 12:50

gamer only if we get prods to keep the passive aggressive non smokers inside grin

Now that would be a thread Grin

There have been no pointless debates on this thread. It's been properly entertaining!

ThymeLord · 24/04/2017 12:51

Can you only speak to strangers if a man is with you?

ilovechoc1987 · 24/04/2017 12:51

Phylis next time make a stand, I'm a smoker but I would never light up next to anyone who wasn't smoking, in fact I'm the type of person who hides down an alleyway incase my Family sees me. Unless people speak out then those people will never learn what is and isn't socially acceptable.

Gowgirl · 24/04/2017 12:51

It beats cleaning the bathroom!

gamerchick · 24/04/2017 12:54

The >>>>I'm pregnants

ilovechoc1987 · 24/04/2017 12:54

I'm sitting in the rain, smoking...

NewDOOFUSfor17 · 24/04/2017 12:56

Umm.....

LilacPoint · 24/04/2017 13:32

I urge any smokers to get dogs. Yes, dogs. The fresher air you get exercising them will instantly improve your health, and all the hand washing to prevent ingesting worms will keep you from smelling like an ashtray Grin
Reasons to be cheerful!!

derxa · 24/04/2017 14:54

I love the hyperbole on MN. If you sit outside a cafe in MN world you're going to get (a) savaged by a dog (b) asphyxiated by smoke or (c) have loo brush rammed up your arse.

NewDOOFUSfor17 · 24/04/2017 14:56

derxa 😂....I have never threatened anyone with my bog brush outside a cafe, just in case anyone wondered.

JacquesHammer · 24/04/2017 14:58

YANBU. Revolting habit.

expatinscotland · 24/04/2017 14:59

I love these threads, so much outrage. They're all the same, too.

derxa · 24/04/2017 15:02

.I have never threatened anyone with my bog brush outside a cafe, just in case anyone wondered Grin Not even if I started puffing on a fag 100 yards away?

cocobatter · 24/04/2017 15:10

Haven't RTFT but what about sunbeds around the pool/on the beach when abroad? There's always someone nearby who's lighting up. My mum hates it and is asthmatic but never says anything (language barrier aside). Often we would be eating/drinking by the pool - what's the difference?

IMO you kind of have to accept that if you're outside you're probably gonna be downwind from cigarette smoke at some point. Suck it up (not literally, don't wanna get cancer Grin)
