London Marathon - I appear to have something in my eye

One of the runners started collapsing 200m from the finish. His legs were uncontrolled and he fell. Another runner stopped and picked him up and was pointing at the finish line and urging him on and between him and a marshall managed to get him to the finish line.

I must be hormonal or something, it was just so, so lovely.

Well done to all the runners today, especially my friends husband running in memory of their little boy. You are all bloody incredible.

I'd just regained my composure after watching that clip upthread and then those pesky justgiving comments have set me off again!

NotYoda · 23/04/2017 15:58

Matthew Rees is lovely

ThreeLeggedHaggis · 23/04/2017 16:17

It was lovely to see!

Does anybody know if David has a condition or if it was 'just' muscle fatigue? When the cameras first honed in on them, I expected the commentator to say he had a disability.

Not that it matters. I'm just curious...

NotYoda · 23/04/2017 16:19

No, I don't think so.

MrsSthe3rd · 23/04/2017 16:39

Huge respect for David.

What he must of endured to get over that finish line is unbelievable. He and his family should be immensely proud of theirselves.

BeyondUser24601 · 23/04/2017 16:43

Oh god, I'm off again... 😭😭😭

I watched that Monstermuncher........There were tears

NotYoda · 23/04/2017 16:46

David Wyeth is nearly 3 x over his target on his JustGiving page

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 23/04/2017 16:50

I haven't seen this yet. Recorded it for later but I foresee multiple things in eyes when I do watch it! I still get a lump in my throat when I remember Alistair and Jonny Brownlee doing something similar in a triathlon last year.

MsHooliesCardigan · 23/04/2017 17:04

I've run the London Marathon 3 times and I went to watch it today. It really is the most life affirming event I've ever watched/participated in. It makes me very proud of my city and my country.

Bahhhhhumbug · 23/04/2017 17:07

Ah l missed it this year will watch it later but there is something so so moving about watching people giving their every last shred to help others. Cracks me up every single year l can always hear Whitney Houston singing 'One moment in time' for some reason too.

teaandcakeat8 · 23/04/2017 17:14

Threelegged I'm pretty sure it's just muscle fatigue and pure exhaustion, I've been like this after a race before and it's so odd.

He actually ran a very fast time, possibly just misjudged fluids or food.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/04/2017 17:32

It was a lovely gesture - but interesting how it's captured the attention of so many when one his Swansea team mates, Josh Griffiths, could claim to have greater reason to grab the headlines. 21 year old Griffiths running his first marathon ended up being the first Briton home and qualifying for the world championships - he was missed off the first set of results because he was not in the 'elite' field but started with the club runners.

Enko · 23/04/2017 17:41

I ran it 10 years ago and I can still recall the sensation of utter joy when I crossed that finish line.

NEVER doing it again though.

Sat down at Charring Cross station after to get a drink and dh had to physically pull me up as I couldn't manage myself. Smile

Team spirit is amazing and this clip is lovely. Also well done to Josh as mentioned above.

Moving Great pic of Mary! She was incredible. I love how the BBC commentators kept saying she'd gone to fast and was slowing down and she wouldn't break the record. And she did!!
she didnt the world record is still Paula Radcliffe 2;15;25 she did it in 2;17;01

MovingtoParadise · 24/04/2017 13:39

There are two women's 'world records' - 1 where women run on their own - Mary set this yesterday. And one where they run in a mixed group (makes you run faster) - which Paula holds Smile

theredjellybean · 24/04/2017 14:16

the interview on bbc has just made me cry again....
I cried through all the coverage ...

RomanticWalksToTheFridge · 24/04/2017 14:20

I saw the interview as well and thought they they both seem just really nice blokes. :)

fascicle · 24/04/2017 14:34

I love all the human interest marathon stories but that is rather an incredible achievement. Very young too.

Enko · 24/04/2017 14:35

#standingonlego how did Gerald do? With such a half time i would love to know. Inpressed at someone that age doing this.

CosmoKlit · 24/04/2017 14:39

www.facebook.com/BearOfTooMuchBrain/

Facebook page of the man with the Brain Tumour. I still can't believe how he absolutely smashed it. I am in awe.

Loved the BBC interview this morning. This Marathon (as others have done before) really do show the best sides of people at times. I really want to run it next year.

Knackerelli · 24/04/2017 19:16

Have you seen on Facebook; Chorlton are saying that as Matt Rees sacrificed his marathon to help David they will pay for his entry next year, weekend accommodation and first class train travel there. I'm crying all over again!

brexitstolemyfuture · 24/04/2017 19:24

Just watched it, i kinda thought he should rest on the ground and have some medical treatment as his body looks like it was shutting down.

Then again I've know two "super fit" people that died in their 30s while exercising.

brexitstolemyfuture · 24/04/2017 19:26

Also cynically i thought he knew there were tv cameras all over the place and doing something like that would get him attention. Meh I'm not hormonal at the moment.
