London Marathon - I appear to have something in my eye

One of the runners started collapsing 200m from the finish. His legs were uncontrolled and he fell. Another runner stopped and picked him up and was pointing at the finish line and urging him on and between him and a marshall managed to get him to the finish line.

I must be hormonal or something, it was just so, so lovely.

Well done to all the runners today, especially my friends husband running in memory of their little boy. You are all bloody incredible.

How lovely - Matthew Rhys has a blog here and he is obviously serious about running so what a lovely man to stop and help someone else when he just have been focused on a setting a good time for himself

Pigface1 · 23/04/2017 13:44

You aren't hormonal... or at least if you are you've got a lot of company :)

I find the whole day so emotional - all these people with their different reasons for running - and the event really brings out the absolute best in people as well. Such a great atmosphere.

bottomhangingout · 23/04/2017 13:44

It was amazing wasn't it. I too had tears in my eyes.... how uplifting and inspirational.

skincarejunkie · 23/04/2017 13:46

I saw it too. Cried! So lovely. Lovely man.

AlpacaPicnic · 23/04/2017 13:46

I cried too! Thinking about it again, I'm starting again... I hope we get an update on how he is, I'd love to see the two men reunited!

Phoebefromfriends · 23/04/2017 13:47

Just watched it and I'm crying a river. I usually limit how much of the marathon I watch because I can cry for the whole time it's on. The pain, the sacrifice and all those inspiring and sad stories.

Hulababy · 23/04/2017 13:47

His blog also shows that he did indeed have set targets for the LM, as a serious runner. So he is a true gent - sacrificing his own targets to help a fellow runner.

Brightermornings · 23/04/2017 13:48

I'd hoped someone had started a thread on this. It was an amazing moment I think hay fever season has started in my house Blush

RJnomore1 · 23/04/2017 13:49

I watched that and now I'm howling .

Little moments of humanity like that just light up the world.

Lifeisbeautiful2 · 23/04/2017 13:51

I saw that, we were cheering him on from our living room. What a lovely guy to stop and help :)

NotQuiteJustYet · 23/04/2017 13:51

How lovely to see that! I really hope that runner is alright.

RJnomore1 · 23/04/2017 13:52

I was away this morning with the couple who got married at cutty sark at 7.30. She had breast cancer and they are both running for charity. He's going for a time and she was running with her dad who's had a hip replacement. Cue much joking about him legging it from her and big snotty tears chez RJ.

salsamummy · 23/04/2017 13:54

It was brilliant! I have been trying to get a ballot place but no luck. I am not even running at the moment but would love to do it.

I worry that I am too emotional though and would blub the whole way round! lol

MrsPringles · 23/04/2017 13:55

Oh wow.
How unbelievably kind and selfless.

The world would be a much nicer place if everyone was as kind as that man. Definitely didn't make me cry it did

DoItTooJulia · 23/04/2017 13:55

Gosh. I just watched it from the link. In tears here too. Amazing thing to do.

SheSaidHeSaid · 23/04/2017 13:55

I haven't been watching it but I'm hungover, fragile and emotional so this has choked me up.

MovingtoParadise · 23/04/2017 13:57

We live right next to the 1km marker and saw everything this morning. It was so amazing.

Here is my dog in her 118 t shirt supporting them Grin

It is a fantastic race and restores your faith in human nature - if you ever get a chance to do it, grab it with both hands and limp over that line!

Even as a runner, coming round that last corner with complete strangers screaming you on it is hard not to cry. It is a wonderful day and I'm glad I did it when I could.

IloveBanff · 23/04/2017 14:02

Oh how annoying. I clicked on the Telegraph link upthread and just got a message "This media cannot be played". I'll try to find it somewhere else.

MycatsaPirate · 23/04/2017 14:04

Thanks for the link. Now all wet-eyed again.

I hope the Chorlton runner is ok. He looked dreadful. Glad he made it though, how gutting would it be to get so near and have to quit.

I bet Matthew's club are incredibly proud of him.

IloveBanff try this link

unicornsIlovethem · 23/04/2017 14:05

I was ready too. I did 5 miles this morning and now can't walk so much sympathy for the poor guy collapsing.

I guess Matthew Rhys isn't a charity runner, but if he was I'd do a donation! If there's a Swansea harriers nominated charity, I'd be happy to bung a few quid to that, too.

MycatsaPirate · 23/04/2017 14:05

Moving Great pic of Mary! She was incredible. I love how the BBC commentators kept saying she'd gone to fast and was slowing down and she wouldn't break the record. And she did!! Never underestimate a gutsy determined woman!

Hulababy · 23/04/2017 14:06

Don't think Matthew Rees is, but David Wyeth is running for charity.
