To go swimming without shaving?

I am not a regular shaver. It's time consuming, occasionally itchy during regrowth and I hate myself for feeling like I have to conform to society's expectations plus I'm lazy I really want to take dd swimming more regularly but I really can't be bothered with maintaining a smooth bikini line and legs.

I am well aware that I wouldn't even be asking this if I was a man, but I can't shake the feeling that someone will be disgusted by my hair. I'm so annoyed that I feel like I have to remove part of my body to become an acceptable member of society.

Would you judge me for having hairy legs and hair around my bikini line? If you don't like shaving what do you wear swimming?

those Burkinis really? Hmm

ChaiTeaTaiChi · 21/04/2017 13:20

Well they don't seem to understand basic English, so I could perhaps write in Arabic? Has the added advantage of lots of phrases to tell women to cover themselves up to suit others, so suitable here for the haters.

HelenaDove · 21/04/2017 13:21

brass brass If an employer treated me differently because i hadnt waxed my legs id sue for sex discrimination.

And im not a yeti thankyou Ms Misogynist.

brassbrass · 21/04/2017 13:21

xForsythia I can't laugh out loud where I am but I am cracking up here!

TabascoToastie · 21/04/2017 13:23

This is the swimsuit I swim in (which shows pubes) - such a slutty mcslutterson, aren't I, with my upper thighs on view! Hmm

Or you could stop behaving like a toddler and not stare at my crotch? Pretty pervy.

To go swimming without shaving?
brassbrass · 21/04/2017 13:23

sure Helena that's another realistic suggestion thanks for that Hmm you've helped women immensely bravo!

HelenaDove · 21/04/2017 13:25

I wonder how many ppl offended by others body hair would put their money where their mouths are and pay for other ppl to have a wax as it offends them so much.

Lower income women cant afford to bow to all this pressure and yet it seems will be bullied if they dont.

ChaiTeaTaiChi · 21/04/2017 13:25

What's with the comments about helping women? You're not seriously suggesting you are being helpful telling them that they must cover up or people will be horrible about them, as you are? Is that your brand of helpful feminism?

Anyway, i'm sure you have something you could be shaving (your knuckles perhaps?) so don't let us keep you.

Morphene · 21/04/2017 13:25

I swim weekly with whatever hair grows on my legs, armpits, upper thighs.

There is a huge amount of pubic hair visible at pools but the overwhelming majority of visible pubes reside in the armpits of men.

I agree with bertrand "One of the great triumphs of misogyny in recent years is the transformation of women's pubic hair from a perfectly normal secondary sexual characteristic of a mature human female to a disgusting, dirty, smelly unhygienic indicator of an absence of self respect."

HelenaDove · 21/04/2017 13:30

Dorchester employees on £9 an hour told to shave/wax legs and get manicures.

Spiralblanket · 21/04/2017 13:30

I like and agree with this:

Be as hairy as you like. Enjoy your swim.

People saying they don't want to see your pubes can look away!

brassbrass · 21/04/2017 13:40

I repeat: I don't have an issue with body hair I prefer not to see genital pubes of strangers. Check the thread I haven't said anything about leg hair or armpit hair or told anyone they HAVE to do anything.

We can go round and round repeating this as often as you like but it sounds like you only want to have a bun fight about this one already over worked point.

What I'm acknowledging is that in the real world your rather wild suggestions of telling women with real hair issues to just let it all hang out isn't at all realistic or practical. You're up in arms as to any suggestion that might help navigate that. I think that's rather odd actually and also quite funny!

Feminism = get your pubes out ROFL!!!

SymbollocksInteractionism · 21/04/2017 13:43

I can hardly ever be arsed shaving so i have a pair of black exercise shorts that go over my swimsuit.
Nobody is then offended by my spiders legs!

Spiralblanket · 21/04/2017 13:45

Brassbrass- don't look then?

BertrandRussell · 21/04/2017 13:48

oK. Look at the swimsuit Pictured in Tabasco's post of 13 something.

Presumably any hair that suit showed would be leg hair rather than pubic hair? What with it completely covering the pubic area an'all?

So that would be OK. All we have to do now is decide how far away from your vulva a hair has to be for it to change from a pubic hair (eewww) to a leg hair (absolutely fine)

Oh don't be so silly. In the "real world" plenty of women go swimming with a few stray upper thigh pubes dangling out the side of their swimsuit and the world does not stop turning - go into any women's changing room/shower in any gym or swimming pool and you will see pubes.

Outside of MN I've never, ever heard of anyone objecting to this perfectly normal every day thing, nor even considered it a possibility. I genuinely have no idea what you think makes it "unrealistic" considering it already happens every day all over the country and indeed the world.

There is no "problem" that needs to be solved and screaming "ewwww icky!" at the sight of body hair and insisting women shave or swim only in board shorts is ridiculous. The OP wanted reassurance, not a pile-on. Put on your big girl pants and stop obsessing over other women's upper thighs, it's both childish and creepy.

GolyHuacamole · 21/04/2017 13:50

Funny how men never have problems or issues over body hair.

The older I get the more I realise there's more to a person than their body hair.

B1rdonawire · 21/04/2017 13:54

I am about to go swimming. I have not shaved. I'll be clean and decently covered, that's about it. People are far more likely to be glancing at me pityingly because I will be wrestling an over-excited child thrashing like a salmon, than because bits of me might be hairy.

Although I do recommend a manic child as an excellent way of deflecting scrutiny of any kind - people can't look away fast enough Grin

HelenaDove · 21/04/2017 13:56

brassbrass You used the phrase hairy yeti Well yetis (the actual animal) are hairy all over so its obvious you were referring to leg hair too.

brassbrass · 21/04/2017 14:00

Bertrand the point you're obtusely missing is it's up to the individual. Some women might be ok with it some might feel like it doesn't actually cover them enough. For those women that feel it doesn't cover enough your only advice seems to be 'oh let it all hang out'. But that doesn't really address the issue does it? Therefore it's not helpful is it? Not all women want to let it all hang out. But they'd like to still swim.

And don't be so hung up on my EEWW. Nothing is going to change my reaction to strangers (genital) pubes but I did say way back that it wouldn't be anything melodramatic and I'd go back to carrying on with whatever I was doing. If people read the thread that would be helpful instead of twisting it into something ridiculous.

brassbrass · 21/04/2017 14:11

Helena you're stuck if you can't have a conversation and only insist on banging out the same thing there's no point is there?

The hairy yeti was in relation to turning up to work looking hairy all over. It wouldn't empower me in the slightest I can assure you. It would be detrimental to my career and not working would impact my life. And no I don't have the luxury of taking anyone to court for discrimination. I need an income! So you see your brand of feminism wouldn't actually help this particular woman. I guess your brand of feminism is for a subset of women who only fit your criteria.

Meanwhile I'm working on equal pay and career opportunities cos you know that might actually advance my female colleagues. I've not thought of fighting that battle on the pube front. But you seem to think that's the answer to everything ROFL
